Bale vs Walcott

Will make a great poll one day when we are bored by waiting around for international football to stop being shit - both southampton youngsters, wingers even though they are technically out of position, big money youngsters, either side of the north london divide, will surely both go on to great things...

Miss Selfridge at the Sex and the City 2 premiere!

The Miss Selfridge team were lucky enough to attend the Sex and the City 2 premiere in London and what a night it was! Walking the red carpet alongside the cast made all our superstar dreams come true. No plot spoilers we promise, but, the outfits were fabulous as always!

....

We spent the night mingling with SJP and the girls, Kylie, Emma Bunton, Jaime Winstone, Mr Big, Theo Walcott, Louis Spence, Daisy Lowe and so many other celebs we can’t keep track! Without a doubt Gok Wan was our favourite fashionista and he had us all in stitches with his hilarious jokes.

Anyone who votes Bale hates football.

i've got blingees on my fisters (darraghmac), Sunday, 24 April 2011 16:21 (fourteen years ago)

I'd rather have Bale than Walcott, but it's all a bit much.

EZ Snappin, Sunday, 24 April 2011 16:23 (fourteen years ago)

tbf i did include it as an option just for those of ye that needed to click on the clearly-titled poll just to vent

tbf bale once did score a volley. and then... oh yeah he was awes against arsenal last season. and in the rest of his career... he... well... there was that... nope, he was a big part in them going 4-0 down in the first place... but... shit... he must have done something...

popular gay automobile (a hoy hoy), Sunday, 24 April 2011 17:09 (fourteen years ago)

great until injured

had a tough road back from injury, in a very unsettled team, in a position he's not really suited to at the highest level

but calendar years 2010 he was great throughout, though i'm not about to play-by-play it for ya

i've got blingees on my fisters (darraghmac), Sunday, 24 April 2011 18:41 (fourteen years ago)

This is a pretty good question. They both have the potential to get better, but at the moment I'm not actually sure who's the better player. If I'm honest I think Theo's potential peak is probably higher than Bale's. Option 3 then.

I'd actually like to see Bale as a deep-lying striker, sort of a Gerrard/Ronaldo da Lima hybrid rather than a link-up type - those guys are the most thrilling things in football imo, seems like a while since there's been a battering-ram type player on the loose. I suspect it wouldn't work, though I'm not 100% sure why.

Ismael Klata, Sunday, 24 April 2011 19:00 (fourteen years ago)

he needs space in front of him to get up to full destructive speed, hard to find it in that area. r da lima reached full speed in 3 steps tbf

i've got blingees on my fisters (darraghmac), Sunday, 24 April 2011 19:24 (fourteen years ago)

bale's position is wingback, really, with no emphasis on defending- like a bolt in a strung crossbow.

the other side, well people are saying naughton and good luck to the lad, but imo lennon could do a pretty good job too- his tackling and tracking are better than bale's for a start

i've got blingees on my fisters (darraghmac), Sunday, 24 April 2011 19:26 (fourteen years ago)

ronaldo was p much never a deep lying forward, he was a #9 who sometimes drifted

i envisaged bale in that role tho

Gareth Bale

haha oh god yeah. it would've been great if it was just a tip for the 3.45 at Newmarket.

Beckham's getting himself some of this terrible kids books action too.

Here he is jealously wishing he could read them.

bell hops (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 30 April 2011 22:35 (fourteen years ago)

I had a read at one of young Theo's books in WH Smith one day. There was a long passage where the kids all watch and marvel at some guy's movement off-the-ball. Couldn't be duller if it was ghosted by ... hang on, what does Michael Owen do with himself these days?

Ismael Klata, Saturday, 30 April 2011 22:46 (fourteen years ago)

gets naked and blinds racehorses iirc

bell hops (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 30 April 2011 22:50 (fourteen years ago)

LAWYERS PLEASE NOTE: to the best of my knowledge, Michael Owen does not like to get naked and blind racehorses. Also his injury record is comparable to any other player of his age and he has an important goal coming at some point this season.

bell hops (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 30 April 2011 22:52 (fourteen years ago)

I guess I would read a Benoit Assou Ekotto choose your own adventure.

Rather prophetically, it was called "Hero to Zero".

i wonder what the kids mom would've said if she'd found him alone with Michael Owen in his bedroom?

I like to think he still wakes to that tune every morning, sits up and gives himself a thumbs up in the mirror.

lol that Michael Owen soccer skills thing was shot at Stoke, presumably the rest of the lessons were mainly about martial arts.

bell hops (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 30 April 2011 23:20 (fourteen years ago)

That boot camp format started with a Ryan Giggs vehicle circa '93/94 iirc. I remember my sister and astutely commenting that they were now really struggling to find new ways to sell football.

Giggsy was spectacularly uncharismatic. We still quote some of his lines to each other occasionally even now:

"Andrei Kanchelskis - hardest shot in the Premiership, if not the team"
.

Ismael Klata, Sunday, 1 May 2011 07:43 (fourteen years ago)

I was just speaking to her there - the mere mention that I'd been reminiscing about Giggsy instantly drew that quote.

Ismael Klata, Sunday, 1 May 2011 10:18 (fourteen years ago)

haha giggs is AWFUL. there was a cbbc thing where two presenters did a bike race against each other for comic relief and various sports stars had to offer their encouragement, giggs' version was so bad, monotone, dry "me and the lads are all behind you every step of the way" that my friend who edited it took the piss and did a dream sequence as the race was about to start with giggs blank face appearing above the presenter's head and droning "me and the lads are all behind you every step of the way."

then after the credits rolled and the show's logo and editor cred appeared he stuck in one more "me and the lads are all behind you every step of the way".

miss kids tv for this kind of stuff, though usually it was a war between people who felt kids could appreciate irreverence and people who think kids only laugh at things which no adult finds remotely funny whatsoever.

tip of the cap to nakh, who gets shirty if you don't mention that he also envisaged bale in this role. played inside left in a front 3 with adebayor and vdv against norwich and pwnd

how the hell did lolcott get 4 votes that weren't from sam?

Nogood (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 3 January 2012 10:37 (thirteen years ago)

think bale was injured at the time tbf

DeLonge and Winding Refn (darraghmac), Tuesday, 3 January 2012 11:03 (thirteen years ago)

dont think i'd vote theo now. some how in improving many things he used to be rubbish at (tracking back, crossing, one touch, remembering he is playing football instead of standing around like arshavin) he has forgotten how to beat his man, put it on target or stay in position. with arsenal these past five years it has been a case of either-or, which is ludicrous.

bale was having a p lame end of season imo but he is consistent every week now and depending on where he is playing next year/who his boss is, could soon be seen as one of the best in the world. (that said I don't like this turn for the gerrard-esque role and after talking to my brother who has been to a few games recently, i've been told he looks uncomfortable at it.)
