Are New York Red Bulls a Premiership Quality Team?

"This team could play in England, it's like a Premier League or Championship team, it's that good. I'm just thrilled. I can't believe I'm here. I look around and think I've landed on my feet."

^^Luke Rodgers

This is a topic that comes up over and over and over again on MLS message boards across the country, fueled by the American soccer nerd's bizarre need to quantify the quality (good or bad) of our top league. I figured it'd be a funny debate to have here.

Here is the first choice lineup of RBNY, at least as I see it. You can see their entire roster here.

G Bouna Coundoul
D Roy Miller
D Rafael Marquez
D Tim Ream
D Jan Gunnar Solli
M Dwayne De Rosario
M Joel Lindpere
M Teemu Tainio
M Dane Richards
F Thierry Henry
F Luke Rodgers*
*could be replaced with Juan Agudelo depending on the situation

I am not a RBNY fan, but being that they are the latest club to get this recursive notion going I'm sticking with them. Laurel may disagree!

Hm, that's not very encouraging. I've never heard of most of those guys, so can't really help here - other than to not that 'premiership quality' includes that Derby side of a few years ago, and NYRB must surely be better than them.

"[Donovan] is telling linemen off, shouting at referees. Is it one rule for him and one rule for the rest of us? He needs to be a bit more humble,'' Rodgers continued. "He's just a bit annoying. Just a bit annoying when it's like you've got two referees on the pitch. He's running up to the referees telling him what decisions make. I've never ever seen nothing like that.''

obviously doesn't know what premiership football is like.

best case is probably about as good as blackburn, if competently managed

worst case you could argue is a past-it and gutless rabble along the lines of strachan's middlesbrough in the championship

toss a coin really

they've been crap of late esp when bringing what, 14-15 reserve players for a cup quarterfinal and the coach isn't even there

keillor can folk anything. and he will, and has. (dan m), Wednesday, 27 July 2011 02:21 (thirteen years ago)

I kind of want to talk about it but moreso I don't want to talk about it. Just depressing.

The open cup matches were sacrificed for the Emirates, to rest players, and now we have, what, games two days in a row and another one a couple of days later? And then we go back to our regular season with whatever wear and tear and injuries have piled up? Our league season got so screwed by non-league competitions this year.
