Introducing the Hardline According to (jim in glasgow), Monday, 27 June 2011 21:00 (thirteen years ago)

i just think that the physical component of football is such an important part, and women just can't do what men do. even a team like barcelona made up of wee guys, they're wee guys who are pressing and making runs at full pelt for 90 minutes. so there are nice passages of play, well taken goals, lovely passes, but the whole endeavour lacks a certain oomph.

Introducing the Hardline According to (jim in glasgow), Monday, 27 June 2011 21:03 (thirteen years ago)

The stakes are still there, though, and an elegant attack is still an attack. The power isn't quite there in the shots, but someof the passing was pretty good and I like that there seems to be less simulation/diving.

Dan if you start a thread now for Canada 2015 I promise I will post condescendingly to it. Though I cannot promise eight condescending posts in a row.

boxall, Monday, 27 June 2011 23:52 (thirteen years ago)

I have not been watching this tournament but I did see Marta play for her club team in person a couple months ago. Scored one, assisted two in a 3-1 win, was generally excellent.

boxall, Tuesday, 28 June 2011 00:05 (thirteen years ago)

it's ok guys, I think this thread better showcases the apathy we all feel toward the tournament

dan m, Tuesday, 28 June 2011 01:41 (thirteen years ago)

LJ would've been an asset on this thread; no-one else relentlessly champions the mundane, while lamenting incompetence, with all-round good vibes, quite like him.

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 28 June 2011 05:46 (thirteen years ago)

whatever happened to lj?

Japan scored a nice free kick yesterday too, not quite as sweet as Sinclair's but pretty good. Mexico's goal was so out of the blue, 30 yard wallop. Nicely done. Necib(?) for Japan was excellent yesterday.
Also seeing as Under 17's was mentioned upthread, Ivory Coast vs Brazil was a cracker yesterday. Finished 3-3 with a hat trick for IC by Coubailly. A couple of the finishes were audacious to say the least.

pandemic, Tuesday, 28 June 2011 10:16 (thirteen years ago)

BBC not really pushing this much, games hidden away on Channel 301, because Winbledon's on I suppose... and Glastonbury(!) I enjoy watching women's football.

Sweden just beat Colombia 1-0. Colombia had a Rincon and a Rodallega playing for them, no relations I don't think. US/NKorea later on.

Rodallega is Hugo's niece I think.

carstens, Tuesday, 28 June 2011 18:20 (thirteen years ago)

I had to follow USA vs Korea DPR vis live commentary but I like all the following:

Both US goals came from ppl other than strikers;
They held the Koreans scoreless;
and allowed only 7 shots on goal.

What I like less:

Another disallowed US goal.

carstens, I couldn't even get ESPN's live gamecast thing to work after the second half and ended up using yahoo. Oddly, FIFA's gamecast went down in 2nd half, too.

Wonderful post-match presser: Nortk Korea coach blames defeat on players getting struck by lightning #wwc2011

more detail, so North Korea:

"When we stayed in Pyongyang during training there was an unexpected accident so our team was not capable of playing. Our players were hit by lightning during a training match. More than five were hospitalised. The match was on 8 June."

can we talk about the U-17 world cup here? going to see mexico play ecuador in a couple of hours

Michael B, Wednesday, 29 June 2011 15:56 (thirteen years ago)

Just seen the highlights of Japan U-17s demolishing New Zealand 6-0 in the last 16. Blimey.

pandemic, Thursday, 30 June 2011 14:11 (thirteen years ago)

it was brasil and ecuador i went to see. brasil won 2-0 though i thought ecuador should have got more out of the game. everyone screamed when the no. 11 for brasil got the ball (apparently hes going to juventus) but he was really lazy and shit tbh. some nice touches from the brazilian wingers though. did australia get thumped by uzbekistan as well?!

Michael B, Thursday, 30 June 2011 14:40 (thirteen years ago)

France vs Canada in WWC was excellent earlier. France winning 4-0. France have been the most impressive out of the teams I've seen so far. Thiney got a couple of goals, one of them a real beauty. Georges is absolutely immense at the back and Necib runs the show in a trequartista role.
First half of Germany/Nigeria a bit of a bruising affair, 0-0 so far and Germany yet to impress me.

England/Argentina in U17 World Cup is on Eurosport2 later. Might watch if only to check out LFC's own Raheem Sterling.

pandemic, Thursday, 30 June 2011 19:39 (thirteen years ago)
