gauging interest in secondary Fantasy League w/ player draft

Message Bookmarked

This came up on the other thread beginning here: Fantasy Football League 11/12

I write 'secondary' because you can and should join the real ILF league as well. But if you might want to try this out, post here and I will keep a tally.

If you're deeply skeptical and think this idea should replace men in skinny jeans on the list of 7 Revolting Things Abt American Culture, but are morbidly curious anyway, post questions here and I will try to answer them.

boxall, Wednesday, 27 July 2011 16:46 (thirteen years ago)

interested in how to ensure budgets and all that work out but yeah sure sounds intrsting

CH3C(O)N(CH3)2 (darraghmac), Wednesday, 27 July 2011 16:47 (thirteen years ago)

I think this is a great idea but the process of actually putting squads together (especially bidding for in-demand players) would be very tricky to work out. My friends and I just meet in a pub and do it but that's obviously not possible here.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 27 July 2011 16:48 (thirteen years ago)

i dunno, ilfchatz is a growth room on aim

CH3C(O)N(CH3)2 (darraghmac), Wednesday, 27 July 2011 16:49 (thirteen years ago)

To address Matt's first point, I hadn't envisioned an auction-style draft, i.e. the kind where you get to sign Torres if you're willing to waste more of your £100m budget on him than anyone else. Instead, if you have the first overall pick and select him, he's yours, and his cost to you is determined by the PL site's valuation.

boxall, Wednesday, 27 July 2011 16:53 (thirteen years ago)

makes sense

CH3C(O)N(CH3)2 (darraghmac), Wednesday, 27 July 2011 16:54 (thirteen years ago)

Kinda fucks over whoever's last in the picking order though.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 27 July 2011 16:56 (thirteen years ago)

i think whoever earns the least should go first.

Upt0eleven, Wednesday, 27 July 2011 16:57 (thirteen years ago)

think boxall had a system for that based on pipecock tossing avg tbh

CH3C(O)N(CH3)2 (darraghmac), Wednesday, 27 July 2011 16:58 (thirteen years ago)

If there's ten of us, last drawn picks 10th, 11th, 30th, 31st, 50th, 51st and so on, right?

Ismael Klata, Wednesday, 27 July 2011 16:59 (thirteen years ago)

Yes, what Ismael said. This is called a 'snake draft' b/c it winds back on itself, and is popular in US fantasy leagues.

boxall, Wednesday, 27 July 2011 17:02 (thirteen years ago)

Alternatively we could do a random drawing for position every round.

boxall, Wednesday, 27 July 2011 17:03 (thirteen years ago)

I think a league of 8-12 teams would be ideal. The standard squad size is 15, but if time is a concern we could limit the draft to 11 rounds and fill in the team benches w/ undrafted players. It could also be split up over multiple days if one longish chatz session doesn't appeal.

boxall, Wednesday, 27 July 2011 17:06 (thirteen years ago)

You're not obligated to sign every player you draft btw - you're just gaining exclusive rights to negotiate with them, so to speak. If you think Sneijder really is coming to Utd you can risk a draft pick on him.

boxall, Wednesday, 27 July 2011 17:15 (thirteen years ago)

whut

CH3C(O)N(CH3)2 (darraghmac), Wednesday, 27 July 2011 17:17 (thirteen years ago)

None of that, please - sort the whole league out in one sesh imo

Ismael Klata, Wednesday, 27 July 2011 17:23 (thirteen years ago)

Fair enough. That will mean however that everyone will have to keep track of their budget during the draft, make sure not to go over. Unless we want to throw out the idea of a budget altogether.

boxall, Wednesday, 27 July 2011 17:27 (thirteen years ago)

maybe?

CH3C(O)N(CH3)2 (darraghmac), Wednesday, 27 July 2011 17:28 (thirteen years ago)

Yeah, I suppose that would simplify things w/o doing any harm. No one will be able to load up on £10m+ midfielders and strikers anyway, they'll be in too high demand.

boxall, Wednesday, 27 July 2011 17:34 (thirteen years ago)

sort the whole league out in one sesh imo

This can be done, and is the traditional way to conduct a fantasy draft. However, it would require very rapid picks. If we have 10 players, and only draft 11 rounds deep, and everyone takes an average of 90 seconds to draft, that's still 2 hours 45 minutes.

I've been playing around w/ templates on Google Docs and I think a shared spreadsheet could work as a low-maintenance alternative. Something like this.

boxall, Wednesday, 27 July 2011 20:26 (thirteen years ago)

The ESPN site has opened for the season and has Nedum Onuoha one of the most expensive defenders, I wonder if they have inside info on Mancini's plans.

So, here are some options:

a) I'll play provided the draft is completed in one evening so I don't have to think about it after that

b) I'll play provided the draft is completed over, say, 3-14 days, each person editing a shared Google spreadsheet in turn, so I don't have to commit to spending an entire evening online

c) [sotto voce] This is too complicated/confusing/American, you should walk away quietly now before we're all embarrassed

Post a, b or c in this thread and we'll see where we're at next week.

boxall, Thursday, 28 July 2011 04:47 (thirteen years ago)

Would this be on fantasy.premierleague.com or on another site?

Chris, Thursday, 28 July 2011 12:11 (thirteen years ago)

b's probably better, but organising ilxors is like herding cats.

Ismael Klata, Thursday, 28 July 2011 12:44 (thirteen years ago)

Ah screw it, let's try a.

Ismael Klata, Thursday, 28 July 2011 12:50 (thirteen years ago)

hth

Ismael Klata, Thursday, 28 July 2011 12:50 (thirteen years ago)

I'm tempted, but think this is too much fuss, too difficult to get involved. No AIM/FB/G+ for one. Oh well.

I for one am (Le Bateau Ivre), Thursday, 28 July 2011 12:59 (thirteen years ago)

I would do B, A seems like it could be too easily scuppered by one or two people forgetting or being unexpectedly busy or whatever. B has the problem that someone could forget it's their turn for days, but I think on balance it seems easier and more convenient for everyone.

Sir Chips Keswick (Merdeyeux), Thursday, 28 July 2011 14:41 (thirteen years ago)

I vote for 'c'.

I'll be doing the usual fantasy league, though, and join the head-to-head one if someone sets it up.

There is power in an onion (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Thursday, 28 July 2011 18:38 (thirteen years ago)

OK, head-to-head league: http://fantasy.premierleague.com/, code 501818-137752

boxall, Thursday, 28 July 2011 19:01 (thirteen years ago)

I'm cool with doing this, I think.

I am Louise Boat (a hoy hoy), Friday, 29 July 2011 05:52 (thirteen years ago)

Ok I don't understand that draft table. Wouldn't it start with the most prized players going down to the least? Like it would start with say Kun or Drogba or Cesc and then work its way down to the Norwich back-up keeper? And instead N.Zogbia is second choice in the draft?

I am Louise Boat (a hoy hoy), Friday, 29 July 2011 06:07 (thirteen years ago)

That's not the list of players; it's a hypothetical table displaying the players that have been picked, who picked them and when they were picked (at a guess, the order in which these players were picked is based on the current most popular picks in Fantasy PL, hence why Marc Albrighton goes before).

The list of players from which you pick will presumably just be a list.

William Bloody Swygart, Friday, 29 July 2011 10:03 (thirteen years ago)

You want complicated, check out what they're trying to do over here: Quality Sucks: 2011 Bizarro Fantasy Football Thread

I don't think this idea has enough momentum behind it - sorry. But there is a head-to-head league, code 501818-137752, and you can just copy your same team from the main ILF league. It's set up so the last three weeks of the season are QF, SF, and final, but that can be changed if there are only 10 or so entries.

boxall, Tuesday, 2 August 2011 01:59 (thirteen years ago)

I think it is just the initial sorting process that needs momentum and one person who can be bothered to spend a day doing it. Is there an American-sport-fantasy-draft template we can borrow to make it much easier, or would it just have to be input one player at a time?

I am Louise Boat (a hoy hoy), Wednesday, 3 August 2011 19:07 (thirteen years ago)

Alright then: if your interest is real, email me (boxall19, gmail) and if there are six entrants (including me) by Monday, we'll make it happen.

boxall, Thursday, 4 August 2011 00:51 (thirteen years ago)

You want complicated, check out what they're trying to do over here: Quality Sucks: 2011 Bizarro Fantasy Football Thread

Ahhh, American Football. Ok, now I realise why that 'Passing' stuff didn't make any sense whatsoever.

Chris, Thursday, 4 August 2011 01:00 (thirteen years ago)

In case it's not clear, that thread is attempting to devise a statistical formula to determine the worst American football player(s). Then they're all going to compete to draft these awful players and see whose squad can perform the worst. Sounds pretty fun to me.

boxall, Thursday, 4 August 2011 01:02 (thirteen years ago)

that sounds AMAZING and if I could understand the lingo or anything to do with the sport, I'd bookmark the shit out of it. (Instead I am going to spend this year just slowly dipping my toe in the gridiron pool.)

boxall, Friday, 5 August 2011 03:13 (thirteen years ago)

just to confirm, having spent my morning on ff, i am also in.

Upt0eleven, Friday, 5 August 2011 12:30 (thirteen years ago)

I've kind of forgotten what we're discussing here, but whatever it is I'll be up for.

Ismael Klata, Friday, 5 August 2011 15:45 (thirteen years ago)

I would be up for this if there is room.

One option would be for everyone to submit a preliminary team prior to the draft and only hold a draft for the players that have been chosen by more than one person. The less obvious the players the better chance you have of getting your first choice line up and the less you rely on vagaries of system. I have not thought this through at all though.

HIS BODY IS FAT BECAUSE HE HAVE BIG HEART (ShariVari), Friday, 5 August 2011 16:26 (thirteen years ago)

I think I like that - then use the budget for an auction

Ismael Klata, Friday, 5 August 2011 16:32 (thirteen years ago)

So everyone submits a (15-man?) squad, and if you're the only person to name a player, he's yours. Then everyone submits a second list which contains bids for all the players who were named more than once. (The more frugal you were in picking fringe players, the bigger your budget, at this point.)

Am I understanding this right? I think I like it as well.

boxall, Friday, 5 August 2011 16:40 (thirteen years ago)

Yes, that's what i had in mind.

HIS BODY IS FAT BECAUSE HE HAVE BIG HEART (ShariVari), Friday, 5 August 2011 16:48 (thirteen years ago)

Something like that, yeah - a public auction might be fun too, if that'd work.

Ismael Klata, Friday, 5 August 2011 16:48 (thirteen years ago)

Maybe everyone gets the same budget for the auction, more lols in outbidding the guy who got no players in round one and will be left drafting Swansea reserves in round three.

Ismael Klata, Friday, 5 August 2011 16:55 (thirteen years ago)

Wait, what's round three?

boxall, Friday, 5 August 2011 16:57 (thirteen years ago)

diafiyhm (darraghmac), Monday, 30 April 2012 18:14 (thirteen years ago)

It really wasn't too bad as long as I kept up week-to-week. But yes, there's probably a more efficient method.

Wouldn't surprise me if ESPN introduced a draft function in their EPL fantasy in time for next season. U.S. viewership is clearly growing and Americans are baffled by the idea of a non-exclusive fantasy league.

boxall, Monday, 30 April 2012 18:19 (thirteen years ago)

So far it's just small things like this and that ad for tonight's derby, but the Americanisation of the EPL is promising imo.

Ismael Klata, Monday, 30 April 2012 18:22 (thirteen years ago)

Thankfully they're not messing with the actual match coverage in an effort to make it more accessible, it's only the ad campaigns that are somewhat silly. I mean the studio analysts are awful, and we could do without any more Piers Morgan, but otherwise.

boxall, Monday, 30 April 2012 18:32 (thirteen years ago)
