Improve a tournament with a few simple innovations

European Qualifying. Ditch the interminable two-year process. Instead draw the groups as normal, but run the qualifying as a little tournament of its own. Draw the host country for each group at the same time as the group draw is made, then have England, Switzerland and the rest relocate to Montenegro or wherever for a quickfire knockout the autumn before the finals.

More excitement, more interest, fewer tedious weekends off. Also, huge potential for laughs when a big gun stumbles out the blocks and gets knocked out by Estonia.

World Cup Qualifying. Pre-qualifying tournament for lowest x ranked sides. Would like to see teams like Scotland Andorra/Faro Islands given something to play for.

I agree with all of the above. Groups of 4, no seeding, make the tournament a bit longer (5 or 6 weeks) with more teams.

Qualification should be as quick and painless as possible. All these two week Qualification spells during the season make me irrationally angry.

johnstone's paint trophy: each team selects a 7-man squad for a 5-a-side tournament, held at regional football centres. the final is played in wembley arena. if the fa feels particularly daring it can bin the jpt altogether and reapply the 5-a-side format to the league cup. as for crowds? well, ideally each game would last no longer than twenty minutes (with sudden death overtime probably ensuring at most 22 or 23 minutes), so you could in theory play 8 games in a single arena per night, with a 15-minute gap between matches to allow for crowd turnover*. additionally, given the smaller nature of 5-a-side arenas, each match is required to be hosted online, for free, by the two participating clubs' websites.

*there could be a cut-price ticketing option for watching 4 or all 8 games, but crowd-members would have to leave the arena and then re-enter before each game.
