Fabio Capello was left stunned as Wayne Rooney was handed the maximum Euro 2012 ban.

The Italian cried “Oh my god!” as a fax arrived at FA headquarters revealing UEFA had cracked down hard on England’s talisman for his moment of madness in Montenegro.

In before challops.

Matt DC, Friday, 14 October 2011 09:34 (thirteen years ago)

If Rooney's fully fit next summer, Capello should take him. He's never usually fully fit though, no sense in rushing him back from injury.

I'm hoping Sturridge will be a no-brainer as a replacement by that point.

Matt DC, Friday, 14 October 2011 09:35 (thirteen years ago)

I went for the bold 'should take/will not take' option.

  • Should take - I'd take him because he's so much better than anyone else, and because a 23-man squad is so stupidly bloated for a four-game run that it can afford many passengers.
  • Will not take - can't really justify this tbh, I'm just hoping Fabio takes this chance to be bold and create a proper team from scratch with good guys like Wellbeck, Sturridge and Bobby Z.

Ismael Klata, Friday, 14 October 2011 09:40 (thirteen years ago)

Still 'oping for 'arry in.

James Mitchell, Friday, 14 October 2011 09:52 (thirteen years ago)

Sturridge and Welbeck should be good enough to get through the group stage anyway.

I emphasis "should be" - this is England we're talking about after all.

Matt DC, Friday, 14 October 2011 09:57 (thirteen years ago)

Shouldn't take him - fuck him, he disqualified himself from the group stage, all planning now shd be for a team that doesn't need him, tactically or psychologically.

Of course he'll fucking take him.

^^ exactly my view, but better.

Upt0eleven, Friday, 14 October 2011 10:10 (thirteen years ago)

exactly my view, except for the bit about his availibility for any particular match.

Rooney is better, perhaps, than any other single player england has, but to set up a team around a player as inconsistent and immature is a nonsense, bill

shite pele (darraghmac), Friday, 14 October 2011 10:15 (thirteen years ago)

Rooney is better, perhaps, than any other single player england has

this is perhaps, sadly, true. Ashley Cole is arguably better but when was the last time Ashley Cole changed the outcome of a game?

i don't buy that a 23 man squad gives you a lot of slack - England consistently manage to run out of players in one position or another during tournaments thanks to taking blokes that aren't properly fit to begin with. in an ideal world a fit and available Rooney for knockout stages might be an asset from the bench - the reality is that his presence in the squad would likely be unsettling for whoever's asked to play up front in the group games, and provoke the most boring endless round of press speculation ever - it'll be boring whatever happens, but at least if he doesn't go there'll be a few weeks for them to get it out of their system.

Now picture this plausible scenario - a hyped up Rooney finally gets brought on in the second half of a tense, competitive quarter final match. 10 minutes later, the daft bastard's trudging back to the touchline with his head on his chest and the laughter of the opposing fans ringing in his Shrek-like ears.

Two Noble Klinsmenn (Noodle Vague), Friday, 14 October 2011 10:23 (thirteen years ago)

to set up a team around a player as inconsistent and immature is a nonsense

OTM really.

Matt DC, Friday, 14 October 2011 10:29 (thirteen years ago)

Also you rarely see Rooney act like such a dick in a Man United shirt, he's three times as much of a petulant child when playing for England.

Matt DC, Friday, 14 October 2011 10:30 (thirteen years ago)

Of course the squads are bloated - you really need to go some to use 23 players in four or five games. Sixteen-man squads, let's see how you cope with a bit of adversity. Plus they're the best footballers in the world, where's the idea that a centre-back can't fill in at right-back for a game come from?

the reality is that his presence in the squad would likely be unsettling for whoever's asked to play up front in the group games, and provoke the most boring endless round of press speculation ever

^ ain't that the truth.

Ismael Klata, Friday, 14 October 2011 10:32 (thirteen years ago)

Reckon Ashley Young will turn out to be England's best player at the Euros, no matter how good or bad the team are.

Matt DC, Friday, 14 October 2011 10:34 (thirteen years ago)

Usual GK
Usual back 4
Parker Wilshere
Cleverley
Young - Sturridge - Welbeck

Could be tasty?

Matt DC, Friday, 14 October 2011 10:35 (thirteen years ago)

i don't know about that, matt.

shite pele (darraghmac), Friday, 14 October 2011 10:37 (thirteen years ago)

Yes yes but how will Wayne fit in come the knockout stages?

Ismael Klata, Friday, 14 October 2011 10:37 (thirteen years ago)

re squad size - it's not whether I think playing Glenn Johnson as a holding mid would be funny or not, obv it wd be hilarious. i'm just saying England has usually run out of centre backs by the 3rd game of a tournament so the squad size ain't that luxurious even within the rules as they are now

yeah at least in Houillcherre we have a young man who we can rely on not to get sent off

Ismael Klata, Friday, 14 October 2011 10:41 (thirteen years ago)

yeah was also gonna say England at a slight disadvantage against teams with technically adequate players. obv joke about Rooney being played in his natural position tho.

Two Noble Klinsmenn (Noodle Vague), Friday, 14 October 2011 10:43 (thirteen years ago)

i mean, not to beat on about it, but were i asked about rooney's petulance/fouling/hacking/elbowing/ref abuse/diving seemingly not being as big a deal when he plays for manchester utd in england, the first answer to pop into my head is not 'complete personality transplant' it's 'fucking cheating bastard coward colluding refs'

RW Rooney Young

I like this but I doubt Rooney would.

I strongly, strongly agree that a team built around Rooney has two major weaknesses. First, and most obviously, if he gets hurt the whole plan goes to pieces. Secondly, it tactically substitutes one player for a whole team. Since I have watched England consistently, I have yet to really see anything but 11 self-regarding stars mentally crumble in front of millions when their individual skill fails to carry over into building a solid, confident team.

What does one wear to a summery execution? Linen? (Michael White), Friday, 14 October 2011 14:35 (thirteen years ago)

pretty much sums up England since Ramsey was sacked tbh

Two Noble Klinsmenn (Noodle Vague), Friday, 14 October 2011 15:00 (thirteen years ago)

'individual skill'

nakhchivan, Friday, 14 October 2011 15:54 (thirteen years ago)

Skill, charisma, heart, bottle whatever... I've seen Gerrard carry Liverpool and I've seen Rooney (perhaps more spottily) carry Man U. I've seen Beckham try to carry England but there's only so far he could. Owen was a speed merchant who lost his speed and turned into, if not a diver, a guy looking for a free kick/penalty. England always look a little shallow tactically and a little gimmicky and they always look like they're ready to lose all hope and collapse or at least play really dull football in hopes of not conceding.

maybe if you surround an Englishman w/a healthy and well-thought selection of competent foreigners, he can do the job his mgr expects of him and this just doesn't work out at the national side level, I dunno.

What does one wear to a summery execution? Linen? (Michael White), Friday, 14 October 2011 16:19 (thirteen years ago)

that last part is the oft-stated view of the irish pundits

shite pele (darraghmac), Friday, 14 October 2011 16:30 (thirteen years ago)

I think the expectations of the English (kind of like Newcastle supporters imho) are way out of line. Nobody expects the Republic or Scotland or the USA to be awesome so we're happy when we're gritty or lucky or just good enough. The English (I was in England last year just before the WC - totally insane) have staked so much of their national identity on 'their' game that the pressure is unsustainable. They have an excellent national league which has not translated into a great national side in some time. At least the pressure on Brazil is matched with good results...

What does one wear to a summery execution? Linen? (Michael White), Friday, 14 October 2011 16:36 (thirteen years ago)

it's strange, cos i've never met or even interacted online with anyone english who would, for instance, expect us to have a 50/50 chance against spain, or germany, or holland etc Maybe I do overrate england in that i expect them to be somewhere between say the 6th best team in the world and the 15th.

So the basis of the F.A's appeal is that the Montenegro player reckons the ban is too harsh?? UEFA won't take that seriously surely?

pandemic, Friday, 4 November 2011 22:03 (thirteen years ago)

I don't think that's the basis of their appeal. It's just a mitigating factor

Number None, Friday, 4 November 2011 22:04 (thirteen years ago)

I guess? But I don't really see the mitigation, it's got nothing to do with the guy who was kicked imo

pandemic, Friday, 4 November 2011 22:10 (thirteen years ago)

true enough, it's something to cling to I suppose

Number None, Friday, 4 November 2011 22:11 (thirteen years ago)

Is there any risk of it being extended? I'm wondering why they've taken so long to decide whether to appeal or not. It'd be quite amusing if, now it's been announced that he's going anyway, Uefa stuck another couple of games on the top.

Ismael Klata, Friday, 4 November 2011 22:14 (thirteen years ago)

According to BBC if the FA think it looks like the ban will be increased then they will withdraw the appeal (how they will ascertain this I don't know)
More importantly can Fergie please stop fucking around and put Rooney back up front before it kills my ailing fantasy team. Have a word Number None.

pandemic, Friday, 4 November 2011 22:17 (thirteen years ago)

I really don't think the Rooney in midfield experimental will continue on the weekend. I fucking hope not anyway. Plus it's Steve Bruce's Sunderland so we should be good

experimental was unintended but surprisingly apt

Number None, Friday, 4 November 2011 22:19 (thirteen years ago)

Hm, that seems a bit hopeful. If that's how it works, maybe Capello should've subbed him betwixt kick and the ref getting the card out.

I'll be most disappointed if a Rooney v Cattermole midfield battle does not happen this weekend.

to recap: obviously the FA will contest the 3 match UEFA ban because had Rooney kicked somebody up the arse cos he was peeved during an EPL ban then the English FA wd have undoubtedly rescinded the 3 match ban, especially if Rooney didn't play for Man U, on account of how the FA is always very concerned to avoid accusations of bias towards Manchester United, a team that the English FA has no strong feelings towards.
