Robben has made me happiest

Two Noble Klinsmenn (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 20 October 2011 23:31 (thirteen years ago)

What a preening, unpleasant bunch this is

simile for me now (admrl), Thursday, 20 October 2011 23:32 (thirteen years ago)

Van Der Vaart, I guess...but holding my nose

simile for me now (admrl), Thursday, 20 October 2011 23:33 (thirteen years ago)

vdv injured, brash, brilliant
robben injured, diving, brilliant
rvp injured, injured, brilliant
sneijder doesn't seem to be injured that much is he perhaps in the wrong poll?

shite pele (darraghmac), Thursday, 20 October 2011 23:49 (thirteen years ago)

Think we should guess at an alt-reality 'history of European football 2005-2011' in which Van Persie went from Feyenoord to Hamburg, Sneijder Ajax-Arsenal, Robben PSV-Real Madrid, and Van der Vaart Ajax-Chelsea.

boxall, Friday, 21 October 2011 00:08 (thirteen years ago)

Depends on what the question is tbh

Y Kant Lou Reed (Le Bateau Ivre), Friday, 21 October 2011 00:26 (thirteen years ago)

rvp, robben and vdv would have been injured somewhere else, sneijder wouldn't have won anything

shite pele (darraghmac), Friday, 21 October 2011 00:32 (thirteen years ago)

I mean they're all cunts in their own unique way. Not of John Terry is a cunt levels, but still.

VDV is probably the least cunty, yet also least talented
Robben can be a huge cunt but in an admirable, "hey i earned my right to be a cunt"-way, plus brilliant
RVP is... RVP. His self-cultivated but failing quasi zen-like self-image is adorbs. He's trying to be a good human being. It's sad he was an injured football player
Sneijder is a cunt and a chav and a greedy fucker and a bastard and hilarilolious but without a doubt the best football player of them all

Y Kant Lou Reed (Le Bateau Ivre), Friday, 21 October 2011 00:37 (thirteen years ago)

are v talented dutch ppl

Let me start again

Dutch people who do well in life, do they struggle to be nice?

shite pele (darraghmac), Friday, 21 October 2011 00:40 (thirteen years ago)

Can someone remind me which of them hates which of the others? If I recall you'd need a well-planned diagram.

boxall, Friday, 21 October 2011 00:42 (thirteen years ago)

they all hate the black players iirc

shite pele (darraghmac), Friday, 21 October 2011 00:43 (thirteen years ago)

Is RVP-Sneijder the main feud? VDV I remember didn't get along with Zlatan but that's a different matter.

boxall, Friday, 21 October 2011 00:44 (thirteen years ago)

@Boxall, RVP and Sneijder do not get along, VDV and Sneijder are buddies but never fit well in the same team.

Y Kant Lou Reed (Le Bateau Ivre), Friday, 21 October 2011 00:45 (thirteen years ago)

xp indeed

Y Kant Lou Reed (Le Bateau Ivre), Friday, 21 October 2011 00:45 (thirteen years ago)

i smell a siiiiitcoooommmm!

shite pele (darraghmac), Friday, 21 October 2011 00:46 (thirteen years ago)

It's not been a real feud as of late (and as of injuries of one or the other), but RVP and Sneijder have a past. Which mostly revolves around bickering about who can take a free kick

Y Kant Lou Reed (Le Bateau Ivre), Friday, 21 October 2011 00:48 (thirteen years ago)

What about Robben, everyone's cool with him?

I think in technical ability I would rank them RVP>Robben>Sneijder>VDV. That might be harsh on Sneijder, I feel like at his best he's less flashy than the first two.

boxall, Friday, 21 October 2011 00:57 (thirteen years ago)

Hmm, for technical ability I'd rank them: Robben>RVP>Sneijder>VDV.

Doesn't seem harsh to me, it all depends if you rate flashiness over insight and mad passes

Y Kant Lou Reed (Le Bateau Ivre), Friday, 21 October 2011 01:00 (thirteen years ago)

probably the bangingest wag them of all though so fair play

cannot vote for wesley however due to suffering that terrible jpeg at the top of the epl thread for too long

vdv looks pretty shit in this company tbh

think i'll vote robben since absence has made the heart go etc

r|t|c, Friday, 21 October 2011 07:55 (thirteen years ago)

vdv had to be included cuz this was a kinda identifiable ~golden generation~ thing for a while, and he is very talented even if not a great player

i think robben probably is the most talented

nakhchivan, Friday, 21 October 2011 07:59 (thirteen years ago)

13 jan 2005 – Martin Jol weet het zeker. 'Arjen Robben is de beste Nederlandse voetballer sinds Johan Cruijff'.

nakhchivan, Friday, 21 October 2011 07:59 (thirteen years ago)

13 jan 2005 martun jol weet het zeker- "jermaine jenas is de beste englandse voetballer sinds bobby charlton"

shite pele (darraghmac), Friday, 21 October 2011 08:12 (thirteen years ago)

The only way I can judge this is 'who would I want in my team most?'

By that logic: Sneijder > Robben > Van Rapist > VDV

Matt DC, Friday, 21 October 2011 08:41 (thirteen years ago)

taking injuries into account?

shite pele (darraghmac), Friday, 21 October 2011 08:42 (thirteen years ago)

It's obviously Sneijder, come on.

Ismael Klata, Friday, 21 October 2011 08:47 (thirteen years ago)

i dunno, injuries apart robben is incredible

shite pele (darraghmac), Friday, 21 October 2011 08:49 (thirteen years ago)

indeed

nakhchivan, Friday, 21 October 2011 08:50 (thirteen years ago)

Yeah but Sneijder seemingly operates either at or near the top of his game for an entire season, whereas with most of these you're guaranteed maybe half a season of great play if you're lucky?

Matt DC, Friday, 21 October 2011 09:26 (thirteen years ago)

sneijder probably is the team sport connoisseurs choice but imo if you can't overappreciate a moody man running really really really fast and banging it into the goal then what's the point of anything tbh

r|t|c, Friday, 21 October 2011 09:44 (thirteen years ago)

yah voting for best injury record is like voting for dog breeds based upon longevity

nakhchivan, Friday, 21 October 2011 10:18 (thirteen years ago)

not really, but in this non-real-world scenario it'll do

shite pele (darraghmac), Friday, 21 October 2011 10:32 (thirteen years ago)

Sneijer is also the best player.

Matt DC, Friday, 21 October 2011 10:36 (thirteen years ago)

if injuries aren't a thing you could argue rvp tbh

shite pele (darraghmac), Friday, 21 October 2011 10:55 (thirteen years ago)

true but the cantona thing at the weekend kinda made rvp's excellence boring to point out

still, 45 in 67 tho

surely gooners couldnt begrudge a man of his talent leaving to do something with his career at 28/29?

r|t|c, Friday, 21 October 2011 11:37 (thirteen years ago)

he's the only one of the four never to be on a league-winning side

was huntelaar ever considered part of this generation?

mizzell, Friday, 21 October 2011 13:26 (thirteen years ago)

huntelaar has more international goals (and fewer caps) than all these guys. but only one at a major tournament.

mizzell, Friday, 21 October 2011 14:28 (thirteen years ago)

KJH's the man you want in your team against San Marino, no question.

boxall, Friday, 21 October 2011 14:48 (thirteen years ago)

RVP>Robben>Sneijder>VDV

I would play any of these guys but Robben's the one whose play I've most admired.

boxall, Friday, 21 October 2011 15:27 (thirteen years ago)

huntelaar was more like van nistelrooij (as many call him) in that he had no hype until he started scoring billions of eredivise goals, the others all had hype since they were academy prospects cuz they had mad skillz

nakhchivan, Friday, 21 October 2011 15:32 (thirteen years ago)

it's a shame real's dutch project never resulted in them signing de jong

sonderangerbot, Friday, 21 October 2011 15:40 (thirteen years ago)

Y Kant Lou Reed (Le Bateau Ivre), Tuesday, 25 October 2011 14:41 (thirteen years ago)

Mebbe should have a Elia-Aissati-Afellay-whoever the 4th would be (wijnaldum?) for future lols.

Sneijder obv wins because of injuries but purely on talent I'd go Rvi robben sneijder vdv. VDV is the only one I don't think is incredible, just p good. If Messi didn't exist, Sneijder would have been WPOTY last jan IMO.

Ravaging Rick Rude (a hoy hoy), Wednesday, 26 October 2011 00:47 (thirteen years ago)

Lol you can write off Aissati, he's wasting away in Young Ajax at the moment. Together with El Hamdaoui he's been banned from the first team dressing room by coach De Boer.

I'd go with Strootman-Afellay-Wijnaldum-Van Wolfswinkel (where Afellay, as he's an 'arrived' player already, could be replaced by Elia)

Y Kant Lou Reed (Le Bateau Ivre), Wednesday, 26 October 2011 06:52 (thirteen years ago)

Van Wolfswinkel is now straight in at the top of my 'please please please come to the Premiership' list.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 26 October 2011 09:21 (thirteen years ago)

Just for the name? :)

Seriously, he's surprising everyone here with how well he is doing. He just keeps on scoring, was voted best player of September of the Portuguese league. ManU keeps popping up as the club that is interested in him. Shame for him he's got people like Huntelaar and Van Persie in front of him. I actually think he is the next Huntelaar, possibly better.

Y Kant Lou Reed (Le Bateau Ivre), Wednesday, 26 October 2011 09:30 (thirteen years ago)

Shame for him he's got people like Huntelaar and Van Persie in front of him.

... otherwise he'd be in the Dutch squad already I mean

Y Kant Lou Reed (Le Bateau Ivre), Wednesday, 26 October 2011 09:31 (thirteen years ago)

two years pass...

if u want to imagine the platonic ideal of an arjen robben goal, chances are it looks a lot like the one he just scored against japan

Nilmar Honorato da Silva, Saturday, 16 November 2013 12:55 (eleven years ago)

I'm gonna picture it in my head. Right wing about 7 yards in from the touchline, left back tries to show him down the outside when Robben gets to about 3 yards outside of the box. Robben comes inside. CB moves across, Robben carries going across the box. Gets to 3 yards shy of the penalty spot and curls it left footed into the corner.

I didn't post on this thread when it started 2 years ago, but if I had I think I would have severely under-rated Robben. He's way way better than I ever gave him credit for in his Chelsea/Madrid years. Either that or he's improved immeasurably which seems unlikely. NV always had his number I see.

Robben's snottiness and the fact that he rarely "puts a shift in" have probably led to him being more overlooked than he shd've been, he'll almost never dominate a match but he will do the incisive stuff when it matters on a regular basis

a strident purist when it comes to band-related shirts (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 16 November 2013 14:05 (eleven years ago)

He is one of my favourite players in world football, still.
