Sorry for OT but there's this lass at work and I'm thinking about asking her out at the weekend. Does anyone know a nice Chinese restaurant I could take her to? Not too pricey, like, I was thinking about ten, twelve pounds a head.

She stays in Blyth so I was thinking maybe Jesmond area? So she can get home easy if things don't work out if you know what I mean?

Ismael Klata, Thursday, 10 November 2011 23:03 (thirteen years ago)

I've been jamming Outlandos d'Amour tonight. There's some great stuff on there - obviously everyone knows 'Roxanne' and 'Can't Stand Losing You', but deeper cuts like 'Next To You' or 'Truth Hits Everybody' are such total jams. Then there's the closer 'Masoko Tanga', totally epic. It's like world music, years before Peter Gabriel invented it.

There hasn't been a better album since, I'm calling it.

Llambias said: “Shearer was my choice and I have to hold up my hands — the wrong choice.” Referring to the relegation battle and the managerial team of Shearer and Iain Dowie, he claimed: “Shearer, for this, destroys us. He gave all the responsibility to Dowie. Rubbish!”

A supporter suggests “It wasn’t the right time” for Shearer. Llambias responded brusquely, and said: “It would never be the right time. Shearer? There would never be a right time in football.”

Llambias explained: “It is about control. We had the control. We knew the Torres deal was there. We drew that f****** deal, perhaps the ultimate. So £30m? F*** off! Don’t waste my time and I slammed the phone down.

“£35m? Everybody including Pardew [manager Alan Pardew] all agreed. “But the £35m they wanted to pay over four years. It was rubbish. Mike (Ashley) said — and he is a brave boy Mike I promise you — get all the £35m up front.

“We got it all up front and then they never paid us on time and we charged them 12 grand f****** interest.”

Roflmao! I've said it before and I'll say it again - wor club is in safe hands with these guys in charge.

How were Newcastle yesterdat? From what I've heard... they might not collapse even with a tough schedule for the next month?

I am Newgod (a hoy hoy), Sunday, 20 November 2011 08:44 (thirteen years ago)

They were pretty good, I was impressed. Nothing spectacular, but well organised, committed and made half-a-dozen chances - scored one, unlucky not to score one which hit the post, and not quite sharp enough to take the others.

Not in the same league as City ultimately, but who is?

Ismael Klata, Sunday, 20 November 2011 08:48 (thirteen years ago)

Have we discussed how fucking dominating City are yet? Somehow it seems to have crept on me that they aren't joining in with the lol 5-3s and 8-2s the rest of the top 6 are having with each other and instead are just steam-rolling teams, aside from O'Shea being a dick.

I am Newgod (a hoy hoy), Sunday, 20 November 2011 08:54 (thirteen years ago)

They really are. If they don't have a slump they could win this by twenty points.

Ismael Klata, Sunday, 20 November 2011 08:58 (thirteen years ago)

So... Spurs then?

Upt0eleven, Thursday, 3 May 2012 10:25 (thirteen years ago)

well i figured we'd be the next job up, tbh, below lfc and certainly below chelsea, city, utd.

And i couldn't see us taking him on this summer were harry to leave.

underleg aeroboots i have smithed (darraghmac), Thursday, 3 May 2012 10:31 (thirteen years ago)

In truth I probably agree: Spurs is probably a small step up from Newcastle in terms of desirability for Pardew - for being in London if nothing else.

Harry leaving doesn't seem that much less likely now than before, right? But presumably Spurs would rather offer the job to Moyes?

Upt0eleven, Thursday, 3 May 2012 10:40 (thirteen years ago)

this is the quandary, i don't see anything in moyes's having kept everton pinging around the epl with various budgets to suggest he'd be a sustained success at a top five club.

I think he deserves that chance, and indeed when you look at what hiring ramos cost us, the epl managers in the running at that time (hughes, o'neill, maybe curbishley and pardew at that time?) were far safer choices.

But there's this glass ceiling of 'winners' and pardew, moyes, arry imself aren't ever gonna be hired by a top five club, it seems?

underleg aeroboots i have smithed (darraghmac), Thursday, 3 May 2012 10:51 (thirteen years ago)

if we finish top four arry's safe imo

point probably refers to any club with expectations of top four, tbh.

underleg aeroboots i have smithed (darraghmac), Thursday, 3 May 2012 11:03 (thirteen years ago)

expectations
So there are at least six top five clubs :)

I don't think Manchesters City and United would call themselves top five clubs, they're Big Clubs Challenging For Honours.

Keith pissed on my chips (onimo), Thursday, 3 May 2012 11:38 (thirteen years ago)

that's a subset

and idk how many 'big clubs' there are, no! i think that realistic cl qualifying hope is prob as good a definition as can be found, tho obv it leaves lfc a bit of a quandary for now.

The old big four didn't have city, we're putting a few good seasos together, i think six teams for now.

Newcastle, everton, villa are two very good seasons away from being there. Dunno who else could break in to bigness in the short term, really.

underleg aeroboots i have smithed (darraghmac), Thursday, 3 May 2012 11:44 (thirteen years ago)

point is that if newcastle finished fifth this season and lost pardew somehow, they wouldn't hire pardew, iykwhim

underleg aeroboots i have smithed (darraghmac), Thursday, 3 May 2012 11:46 (thirteen years ago)

Yes, big difference in perception of get you there managers vs keep you there managers (RIP Big Mick McC).

Keith pissed on my chips (onimo), Thursday, 3 May 2012 11:50 (thirteen years ago)

exactly, but even more than that there's the curious reluctance to consider a 'keep you there' manager from the epl level for any 'keep you there' cl-qualification teams.

I mean, moyes is probably considered almost as likely a candidate in many quarters to succeed ferguson as he is redknapp, or am i way off there?

underleg aeroboots i have smithed (darraghmac), Thursday, 3 May 2012 11:57 (thirteen years ago)

city are a "massive club"

Number None, Thursday, 3 May 2012 11:57 (thirteen years ago)

think pardew's probably mellowed out a bit having been humbled in his earler slide from grace and possibly a more foreign squad is more professional and receptive to his man management (think i read him saying the club's been a lot more together since coloccini became captain). i suppose if the players are good enough he only needs a gentle hand on the tiller.

or maybe just none of the lads have wives fit enough for him to shag.

r|t|c, Thursday, 3 May 2012 11:59 (thirteen years ago)

I think Moyes has spent so long at Everton that big/massive/top five teams consider him to lack the ambition and drive for the job(s). They may be right.

Managing every club is p much getting the best out of what you have and what you can spend. Moyes seems very good at it. Questions seem to be raised about whether giving him extra spendies would find him out - like he can find a £4m Jelavic who looks like a £12m Berbz-lite but couldn't find a £12m Berbz to turn into a £30m Berbz.

Keith pissed on my chips (onimo), Thursday, 3 May 2012 12:00 (thirteen years ago)

massive is a different measurement, it practically smarts of fear of inadequacy tbh

underleg aeroboots i have smithed (darraghmac), Thursday, 3 May 2012 12:01 (thirteen years ago)

well yeah

Number None, Thursday, 3 May 2012 12:05 (thirteen years ago)

rtc spill them! i agree with yr first analysis tbh, but when it starts to go wrong we'll find out i guess.

onimo- have often said that moyes is better ekeing survival then building momentum into overachieving than he is with money/expectations. istr his getting and spending a ball of cash the year they 'qualified' for the cl and it went tits-up because he bought what were essentially in-form championship players.....

underleg aeroboots i have smithed (darraghmac), Thursday, 3 May 2012 12:05 (thirteen years ago)

still, Fellaini is their record signing isn't he? he worked out alright (once they got Gibbo in to do the grunt work)

Number None, Thursday, 3 May 2012 12:07 (thirteen years ago)

what the wives thing? that's commonish knowledge, swygart probably knows better than i do

jose fonte and carl fletcher supposedly, possibly a club secretary of something somewhere along the line iirc but i might be misremembering

also some stuff about turning up to the training ground pissed (keith curle doing this was part of warnock getting the qpr sack btw) and rucking with players

r|t|c, Thursday, 3 May 2012 12:11 (thirteen years ago)

Why is "qualified" in quotes? Because we didn't make it past Villareal in the qualies? The first half of 2005-06 was an abject disaster on all fronts in ways I still don't quite understand.

And why "survival"? Everton tend to find as high as they can considering the expenditure above them; so, four top six finishes in five seasons before the arrival of the New Man City.

xp

Michael Jones, Thursday, 3 May 2012 12:15 (thirteen years ago)

fellaini spent quite a while as an almost-flop, tho? more reds than performances and didn't really get much momentum for a year or so?

I could see pardew being a bit of an effing c, is the thing, he comes off as having an ego alright. All well and good if it's matched with professionalism as opposed to shagging.

underleg aeroboots i have smithed (darraghmac), Thursday, 3 May 2012 12:15 (thirteen years ago)

beattie 6m, johnson 10m, yakubu 12m, bilyaletdinov 8m

silly to say anything went tits up cos of buying "in form championship players" though - cahill, jagielka, lescott?

r|t|c, Thursday, 3 May 2012 12:17 (thirteen years ago)

i have said this many times before after originally stealing it from barney ronay but the only thing to know about pardew is he has the exact same voice as super hans

r|t|c, Thursday, 3 May 2012 12:18 (thirteen years ago)

i know he's bought and done very well out of in-form championship players- just seems to be a running situation where him spending money on them doesn't work out...

underleg aeroboots i have smithed (darraghmac), Thursday, 3 May 2012 12:21 (thirteen years ago)

iirc Fellaini has somehow never been sent off. He's a marvellous player imo.

Ismael Klata, Thursday, 3 May 2012 12:24 (thirteen years ago)

moyes big failing (besides the reverse-curbishley poor start every year which should be unforgiveable at this point) is not knowing how to play to win sometimes - some of the strikers he's had have been maybe not the best or good value but still capable and he could have extracted better from them imo rather than continually relying on a solid platform and cahill nipping in

(4-5-1 doesnt automatically mean defensive, i know i know)

r|t|c, Thursday, 3 May 2012 12:26 (thirteen years ago)

i say this with no spite cos it's unfortunate but fellaini is stagnant and really needs a move

Well of the 'trad' top 4, Arsenal and Utd haven't looked at hiring someone new for 15+ years, Rafa spent 6 years at Liverpool and then they hired 'Woy from midtable and Chelsea chases lights and colours. I don't see why in the next five years, when Wenger and Fergie finally have to be replaced it can't be by the guys bubbling underneath them? I also wouldn't be surprised if City are less crazy (than Chelsea that is) replacing Mancini when he goes. All three will def. try for Pep and Jose first but if that fails, then Pardew could be more attractive than the next Juande from the continent.

Thoughts? You must have loads. (a hoy hoy), Thursday, 3 May 2012 14:19 (thirteen years ago)

woy is an experienced international manager with big names and silverware on his cv.

There are other clubs than arsenal and liverpool in the big clubs, which we've already expanded out to include liverpool and spurs.

The talk was of lambert, rodgers and moyes for spurs were harry to leave. Do you think any of them would be likely to get it? I doubt the first two would even be considered, tbh. 442 managerial merrygoround feature this month has mourinho as dream candidate (pointless to even wish tbh) and concludes that tim sherwood is as likely as anyone.

There just seems to be serious gaps in the managerial assembly line in england atm, idk.
