We need to talk about Everton

Because I am worried about them.

I know they have a poor start every other year and improve, but they don't seem to be playing particularly below themselves this season and I'm not sure there's much in reserve. Add a decent collection of internationals and I'm getting a West Ham feeling at the moment.

Ismael Klata, Thursday, 17 November 2011 13:51 (thirteen years ago)

they were unlucky against liverpool but i think theyll be ok. drenthe seems to be a decent signing.

Michael B Higgins (Michael B), Thursday, 17 November 2011 14:18 (thirteen years ago)

tbf they're 3 points off 9th place with a game in hand, wouldn't say they were one of the three worst teams i've seen this season, Drenthe indeed looks tasty

Ridin' Skyrims (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 17 November 2011 14:23 (thirteen years ago)

wonder when stracqualursi will get a game.

mizzell, Thursday, 17 November 2011 14:25 (thirteen years ago)

think there are at least 6 teams worse than everton in the division, probably more like 8.

pandemic, Thursday, 17 November 2011 14:25 (thirteen years ago)

They've had to play City, Utd, Chelsea and LFC in the last month or so - they'll be fine. Only QPR has been a bad result for them, really.

Stevie T, Thursday, 17 November 2011 14:31 (thirteen years ago)

They have enough good players I think, plus a manager who knows what he's doing, and there are at least 7 or 8 worse teams in the league. West Ham went down because most of the players didn't care and the club was run and managed by idiots, none of those apply to Everton.

Matt DC, Thursday, 17 November 2011 14:34 (thirteen years ago)

just realised the 3 worst teams i've seen this season have been Wigan, Blackburn and us :|

Ridin' Skyrims (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 17 November 2011 14:34 (thirteen years ago)

Just like Newcastle won't finish in the top four, Everton won't finish in the bottom three.

Do you know what the secret of comity is? (Michael White), Thursday, 17 November 2011 15:34 (thirteen years ago)

Ah, timely! xp Where did they find £15m to sign him in the first place?

Ismael Klata, Thursday, 17 November 2011 15:40 (thirteen years ago)

was wondering that too, seems a big fee.

mizzell, Thursday, 17 November 2011 15:56 (thirteen years ago)

maybe they found the rooney money under the couch cushions

mizzell, Thursday, 17 November 2011 15:57 (thirteen years ago)

probly still paying it off in instalments

Ridin' Skyrims (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 17 November 2011 16:02 (thirteen years ago)

was that lescott money or have i got my dates mixed up?

pandemic, Thursday, 17 November 2011 16:10 (thirteen years ago)

i think they plated a full season together?

mizzell, Thursday, 17 November 2011 16:13 (thirteen years ago)

tbf everton were making decent money off decent players most years before signing fellaini

₪_₪ (darraghmac), Thursday, 17 November 2011 18:06 (thirteen years ago)

aiui the money just goes to debt servicing now, which is why I'm worried for them medium-term

Ismael Klata, Thursday, 17 November 2011 18:13 (thirteen years ago)

only got 2.5 mil for Gravesen

mizzell, Thursday, 17 November 2011 18:17 (thirteen years ago)

'galactico' tommy gravesen thank you very much

pandemic, Thursday, 17 November 2011 18:18 (thirteen years ago)

kinda want everton to go down and the myth of them being a well run club living within their means to go with them tbh.

Tokyo Sexwale (a hoy hoy), Thursday, 17 November 2011 18:39 (thirteen years ago)

They're getting 80m or whatever for Ross Barkley, so they'll probably be fine financially

Number None, Thursday, 17 November 2011 18:42 (thirteen years ago)

But almost 2% of that has already beenneophytes on Bradford's Charles Green.

how is this a myth?

mizzell, Thursday, 17 November 2011 19:07 (thirteen years ago)

beenneophytes

was meant to be 'been splurged', I've been totally misquoted here

Ismael Klata, Thursday, 17 November 2011 19:21 (thirteen years ago)

We'll be fine. Financially? Not so good.

Michael Jones, Thursday, 17 November 2011 20:48 (thirteen years ago)

Charles Green

It's George Green ffs. Not sure what he's trying to do there to be honest.

What's the ins and outs financially? Goodison's fairly large, you fill it more or less, you aren't big spenders on transfers (not sure about wages).

Ismael Klata, Thursday, 17 November 2011 20:53 (thirteen years ago)

thought goodison was one thing holding them back. people always talk about everton desperately needing a new stadium.

mizzell, Thursday, 17 November 2011 20:58 (thirteen years ago)

think their wages/turnover ratio is around 69%

pandemic, Thursday, 17 November 2011 21:00 (thirteen years ago)

which is pretty high i think

pandemic, Thursday, 17 November 2011 21:01 (thirteen years ago)

We owe around £45m and we can't apparently borrow any more. We don't operate at a profit and the interest payments are £3m/year. The wages/turnover ratio is kind of mid-table, actually - only Wolves, Arsenal and Spurs had a ratio under 63% in 2009-10. Yes, we made a good profit on Lescott - and then spent that money on Heitinga, Bilyaletdinov and Distin who, I would guess, are not taking home 1/3rd of what Joleon was on...

I'm not terribly well up on this (I need to read more David Conn), but I assume the likes of Sunderland and Villa are in a similar position. I'm guessing that Fulham and Newcastle (who owe 3-4 times as much as EFC) are somehow...not quite so fucked? And then there's the special cases of the elite clubs with astonishing wealth and astonishing debt to go with it.

I guess this is just the cost of chasing 5th every season with (some of) the lowest ticket prices in the league, not great merch sales, not much of a "brand" outside the city, no wealthy benefactor, ancient stadium/facilities, etc etc.

EVERTON FC today launched an internal investigation into the publication on the internet of a series of alleged private emails between senior club officials.

The correspondence, including conversations between director of communications Ian Ross and chief executive Robert Elstone, were published on the Toffeeweb site last night then later taken down.

Versions, however, can still be seen on other fans’ websites.

The emails purporting to be from Ross are highly critical of Elstone’s leadership and describes working at Goodison Park as like “working in a kindergarten.”

Link to the emails. Explosive stuff no doubt. http://www.nsno.co.uk/forums/index.php?topic=15350.15

Funny, I feel the same about Arsenal

R. Stornoway (Tom D.), Friday, 18 November 2011 10:40 (thirteen years ago)

clean hit

ball was there to be won

Was on a plate

R. Stornoway (Tom D.), Friday, 18 November 2011 10:50 (thirteen years ago)

it's bounced up nicely and he's hit it and it's flew in. He'll be happy with that

₪_₪ (darraghmac), Friday, 18 November 2011 11:00 (thirteen years ago)

Schoolboy error by the original poster really, he won't want to watch highlights of that one tonight

R. Stornoway (Tom D.), Friday, 18 November 2011 11:04 (thirteen years ago)

I'm not terribly well up on this (I need to read more David Conn), but I assume the likes of Sunderland and Villa are in a similar position

I think Sunderland and Villa have wealthier owners than Kenwright though.

Think the time to start worrying about Everton is if/when Moyes leaves. They were constantly in the mix for relegation in the 90s and that's not been an issue for years.

Matt DC, Friday, 18 November 2011 12:50 (thirteen years ago)

in six month cycles, it kinda is

₪_₪ (darraghmac), Friday, 18 November 2011 12:57 (thirteen years ago)

I assume Villa can charge more and I think their ground's a bit bigger too, but I cannot see how the sums add up at Sunderland at all, especially when they go on a spree every couple of years.

Ismael Klata, Friday, 18 November 2011 13:24 (thirteen years ago)

celtic tiger residue, won't last long imo

₪_₪ (darraghmac), Friday, 18 November 2011 13:39 (thirteen years ago)

Think Sunderland are a financial disaster waiting to happen tbh.

Matt DC, Friday, 18 November 2011 14:13 (thirteen years ago)

Huge stadium probably helps but otherwise...

Matt DC, Friday, 18 November 2011 14:13 (thirteen years ago)

agree, but then who couldn't you say that about?

₪_₪ (darraghmac), Friday, 18 November 2011 14:16 (thirteen years ago)

have read rumors in the usa of everton selling howard to make cash, probably not at all true tbh

bomb.gif (dan m), Friday, 18 November 2011 16:26 (thirteen years ago)

Considering you'd get about 5m for him...
