One idea I had was, next time there's an international week or something equally tedious, we turn instead to a simultaneous youtubing of some classic ye olde football. The 1974 world cup final for example, or England-Argentina from 1998. Both are up in their entirety. Could be all kinds of interesting.
― Ismael Klata, Thursday, 5 January 2012 17:27 (1 week ago)
Personally, I think this was a terrific idea by Ismael. But also I feel like it is one that needs a bit of legwork before hand, such as figuring out what matches we'd like to watch and discuss and then finding them on the internet. This thread could also just be used for fun finding/watching classic matches in general.
― Aesop Rizzle (a hoy hoy), Tuesday, 17 January 2012 10:45 (thirteen years ago)
The Blizzard runs an extended piece each issue dissecting a classic old match, which are just about my favourite things to read. I'd love to watch those games. I don't know if these are up, but the last three have been:
Red Star v Bayern, EC semi final second leg, 1991United v Real, EC quarter(?) final second leg, 2000Denmark v USSR, World Cup qualifying 1995
― Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 17 January 2012 10:54 (thirteen years ago)
Denmark v USSR is 1985, sorry
I am fascinated by the idea of old team from USSR/neighbour states but my knowledge is severely limited so I'd cosign something like Denmark v. USSR
― Aesop Rizzle (a hoy hoy), Tuesday, 17 January 2012 11:22 (thirteen years ago)
what criteria are we looking for here? Obscurity, excellence?
― modric conservative (darraghmac), Tuesday, 17 January 2012 11:25 (thirteen years ago)
I don't think there is any criteria other than 'something we'd all like to watch and discuss'. Excellence then may come in to play a lot more than obscurity. Reputation, history and lols all may also have something to do with.
― Aesop Rizzle (a hoy hoy), Tuesday, 17 January 2012 11:27 (thirteen years ago)
Interestingness, really, whatever that means to you. Seeing for real how the game has changed is the main thing for me I guess. I'm assuming that a match being available in full would imply some degree of excellence.
― Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 17 January 2012 11:53 (thirteen years ago)
I have the 1967 European Cup Final on my Sky+ box as it was shown recently on ESPN. I was struck by how nervy I'd have been watching it had I been alive in 1967, even though every bit of commentary and writing I'd read about it suggests that Inter Milan more or less gave up because they knew they were going to get hammered.
Few suggestions out of here, maybe?

if we can find a full game of bremner's leeds i'd be interested, the highlights from one or two matches i've seen make them look extraordinary
― modric conservative (darraghmac), Tuesday, 17 January 2012 12:52 (thirteen years ago)
Yes, good shout, I thought when watching The Damned Utd that I'd quite like to see some of the games in full.
― ailsa, Tuesday, 17 January 2012 12:56 (thirteen years ago)
good idea!

Red Star v Bayern, EC semi final second leg, 1991
I bought a DVD of this (and Red Star's home QF leg against Dynamo Dresden) after reading J. Wilson's writeup in the Blizzard - it really is excellent.

i wonder if the famous hungary 5-3 is available anywhere or was even filmed.
― Aesop Rizzle (a hoy hoy), Tuesday, 17 January 2012 16:31 (thirteen years ago)
6-3! And what about the 7-1 game the following year?
― Then in walked Barbara Castle with the Lady Eleanor (Tom D.), Tuesday, 17 January 2012 16:33 (thirteen years ago)
Have seen film of the 6-3 game, don't think I've seen anything from the 7-1
― Then in walked Barbara Castle with the Lady Eleanor (Tom D.), Tuesday, 17 January 2012 16:35 (thirteen years ago)
... centre forward for England in the latter game was Bedford Jezzard... say what?
― Then in walked Barbara Castle with the Lady Eleanor (Tom D.), Tuesday, 17 January 2012 16:37 (thirteen years ago)
... that was his debut too, poor sod
― Then in walked Barbara Castle with the Lady Eleanor (Tom D.), Tuesday, 17 January 2012 16:39 (thirteen years ago)
I watched the 6-3 on you tube a couple of months ago, I'd watch it again easily. It's so interesting to see what's different and what's stayed the same, both in the way teams play, and indeed the attitude of the English play. So many lolworthy moments too.

No-one mentioned the Real Madrid 7 Eintracht Frankfurt 3, 1960 European Cup Final yet? That used to be routinely described as the greatest club game of all time, or of the televison era at least.

Fouls, punch-ups and general thuggery:
Italy v Chile, 1962 World CupRacing Club v Celtic, Intercontinental Cup Final 1967Celtic v Atletico Madrid, European Cup Semi-Final 1974
― Charles Kennedy Jumped Up, He Called 'Oh No'. (Tom D.), Wednesday, 18 January 2012 13:56 (thirteen years ago)
to add to that list, holland v. portugal must be canon thuggery by now
― Aesop Rizzle (a hoy hoy), Wednesday, 18 January 2012 14:03 (thirteen years ago)
Yes, that was hideous.
Description of Racing Club v. Celtic match:
The two-legged final, drawn 2-2, had proven quite rancorous, so both clubs agreed to hold a peace summit in Montevideo: armed police were on the pitch within half an hour of kick-off. There were five sendings off: Basile for a fight with John Clark; Bobby Lennox for a foul he was 40 yards away from; Rulli for being elbowed in the face by John Hughes; Jimmy Johnstone for elbowing somebody else entirely. The final dismissal was Bertie Auld, who refused to leave the field. So the ref let him play on. 'I would like to come back here for another go,' Jock Stein said.

South American teams were stone crazy in those days... well, the Argentinian + Uruguayan ones anyway
― Charles Kennedy Jumped Up, He Called 'Oh No'. (Tom D.), Wednesday, 18 January 2012 14:07 (thirteen years ago)
Yeh, I'd be up for some 70s loltackling. If only to see for myself how the boundaries between a good tackle and red card have changed over time.
― get ready for the banter (NotEnough), Wednesday, 18 January 2012 14:15 (thirteen years ago)
I'm sure red cards were only introduced at some point in the 80s. You could be sent off before then, obviously, but the ref had to do some kind of pointy thing instead.
― Ismael Klata, Wednesday, 18 January 2012 14:22 (thirteen years ago)
i don't know if i've the stomach for those tackles tbh

how many youtube clips can you get in one post? that is 4/14 of it and it looks like the rest is there too. english commentary, quality is decent, no worse than watching the big match on itv4 if it is still on.
should we start an individual thread for that week?
― a hoy hoy, Tuesday, 14 February 2012 09:37 (thirteen years ago)
It should have its own thread for gossip, anticipation &c. (inside story from LBI) but most important is to set a kick-off time. Circa 8pm is best for me but ymmv. How long is it incidentally? Wasn't it vastly extended by gamesmanship-a-plenty?
(great choice btw, huge-but-mostly-forgotten game is ideal for this)
― Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 14 February 2012 09:51 (thirteen years ago)
well 14 parts that all look 10 minutes.

We should! When are people up for it? Tomorrow at 7.45?
― a hoy hoy, Tuesday, 28 February 2012 20:15 (thirteen years ago)
Yes. I was originally going to suggest later, but there's always the possibility of extra time so 7:45 would be best I think.
It needs its own thread now, and a title worthy of the occasion.
― Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 28 February 2012 20:28 (thirteen years ago)
Something like 'The 1978 World Cup final: Netherlands vs Argentina: Wed 29 February 2012 at 7:45pm' should do it
― Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 28 February 2012 20:30 (thirteen years ago)
oh shit there is extra time? totally not going to make 7.45, as i have to work at 10 :(

There was a late kick off too I believe
― Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 28 February 2012 20:35 (thirteen years ago)
you were the one who suggested extra time. lol if i have to come back to the thread thursday morning all 'what did i miss???' for a 30 year old game
― a hoy hoy, Tuesday, 28 February 2012 20:37 (thirteen years ago)
so its cool if i set to 7.30?

― Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 28 February 2012 20:51 (thirteen years ago)
Jeez, I'm getting quite tense, this is a mammoth occasion
haha.
i don't know if i'll watch this tomorrow, tho i'll watch it some time soon. ive read about this match, and to be honest ive read countless things about this world cup, the argentinian team, menotti, conspiracy theories, the dutch etc, yet i can't say i can even remember the goals, tho i'm sure ive seen them.
― zverotic discourse (jim in glasgow), Tuesday, 28 February 2012 21:01 (thirteen years ago)
If you set it for 7.30 that'll mean a 7.39 kick off - the full plastercast gamesmanship is on there. It's great build-up I've got to say.
Punditry a-team in the studio too - Cruyff's there with Clough & Keegan, I know the Scottish voice as well but can't place it.
― Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 28 February 2012 21:04 (thirteen years ago)
I'd better stop watching now!

The decision to do the series was the idea of the club's newest American owners, who hope it will help boost Liverpool's already considerable popularity abroad, which will then increase revenue they can spend on bringing in high-priced talents like Andy Carroll, Stewart Downing and Jordan Henderson.
Excellent.
