7.30pm GMT Wednesday 29th Ferbruary 2012: ILF comes together and watches the 1978 World Cup Final - Argentina v. Holland

Argentina, the host, have made it this far by coming second in a tough 1st Round group with Italy, France and Hungrary and then first in 2nd Round group beating out Brazil, Poland and Peru. Their star man so far has undoubtably been Mario Kempes, Al.

In a similar performance, the footballing team we are all rooting for from the Netherlands came second in their 1st group against Peru, Scotland and Iran. We thought they were underperforming, didn't we Al? We said they need to have it up 'em more. But then they surprised us totally coming first in the second round beating out a much tougher group of West Germany, Italy and Austria. All the more incredible they made it to the final without tailisman Cryuff, but Rep and Resenbrink are on the top of their game, Gary.

Tonight saw Brazil beat Italy for third place and tomorrow we will provide links to the game at 7.30pm.

I would genuinely love to do this, but the idea of being allowed to hog the computer for two hours to watch a game nearly as old as myself might lead to divorce (I get away with a lot for current games, but this might be considered somewhat taking the piss). I think CLASSIC GAMES ON ILF #1 was pretty successful though? I think we learnt some stuff from it - maybe publicise it more the week before hand, find out about footage's kick offs/half times etc., try to get Clough involved some how...

It was great. What a game to kick off with though, we'll be doing well to match that.

I was really surprised how fast it was, not so much in terms of circulating the ball as in the players just being keen to get on with things. Goalies trying really hard to get play moving fast even when they didn't need to and were being crowded out; only two injury breaks and they were both due to guys getting properly poleaxed; very little timewasting as such until the very end; etc. I was expecting the opposite.

3-1 was about right on balance of play. probably safest for all concerned that it didn't go to penalties.

Last night was great, we should do this more often. Nominating someone as timekeeper to call out the youtube parts was a good idea, that needs to happen in the future. Tho maybe do it on a day when there isn't any ACTUAL football on? Seems like folks were frontin' on not caring about international friendlies.

i gave this a watch last night. thought it was interesting to contrast Haan and Ardiles who I guess were the main playmakers. Ardlies looked class but faded pretty early on. In the second half Haan was everywhere, had a couple of sweet long range shots iirc and did plenty of tackling back. Kempes was MOTM but Haan was probably second for me. Olguin wasn't far behind either.

We should do this again some time. Yesterday would have been a perfect time, I was really in the mood to watch something and Roma-Genoa didn't interest me enough as seemingly the only game on in Europe.
