7.30pm GMT Wednesday 29th Ferbruary 2012: ILF comes together and watches the 1978 World Cup Final - Argentina v. Holland

Argentina, the host, have made it this far by coming second in a tough 1st Round group with Italy, France and Hungrary and then first in 2nd Round group beating out Brazil, Poland and Peru. Their star man so far has undoubtably been Mario Kempes, Al.

In a similar performance, the footballing team we are all rooting for from the Netherlands came second in their 1st group against Peru, Scotland and Iran. We thought they were underperforming, didn't we Al? We said they need to have it up 'em more. But then they surprised us totally coming first in the second round beating out a much tougher group of West Germany, Italy and Austria. All the more incredible they made it to the final without tailisman Cryuff, but Rep and Resenbrink are on the top of their game, Gary.

Tonight saw Brazil beat Italy for third place and tomorrow we will provide links to the game at 7.30pm.

Wild Flag Post (dan m), Tuesday, 28 February 2012 22:09 (thirteen years ago)

Get these guys, too big for a world cup final. I'm in.

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 28 February 2012 22:24 (thirteen years ago)

I would genuinely love to do this, but the idea of being allowed to hog the computer for two hours to watch a game nearly as old as myself might lead to divorce (I get away with a lot for current games, but this might be considered somewhat taking the piss). Can we schedule the next one for a time when I have the house to myself?

ailsa, Tuesday, 28 February 2012 22:44 (thirteen years ago)

or when there's no football on just sayin sheesh

international friendlies are like the opposite of football.

shart practice (Merdeyeux), Wednesday, 29 February 2012 03:55 (thirteen years ago)

I'm well up for this tonight. Seeing the similarities and differences between old football and new football is always fascinating. And England friendlies are soul-destroying.

get ready for the banter (NotEnough), Wednesday, 29 February 2012 09:43 (thirteen years ago)

cannot take part in this due to time difference reasons, but i will gladly read your musings about this game during my first hour at work tomorrow.

international england friendlies are like the opposite of football.

imo.

I would gladly do this but i won't be home til about 9 this evening.

He might struggle having it up 'em. This Neeskens kid also looks quite tasty, from the continent.

Sounds like Hoddle in there too? Or Keegan. I get them confused in my minds.

a hoy hoy, Wednesday, 29 February 2012 19:03 (thirteen years ago)

Plz only watch that clip up to 8.44 (kick off) while I collect the rest of the game.

Sounds like keegan to me

get ready for the banter (NotEnough), Wednesday, 29 February 2012 19:19 (thirteen years ago)

I guess, yeah. In my brain they are melded as one (for good reason, they succeeded each other as England manager, that song, both have great overseas careers i mix up etc.)

Y'all watching the pre-match ramble? I'm hoping for kick-off at 7.30 and will post the vids at like 7.28

a hoy hoy, Wednesday, 29 February 2012 19:21 (thirteen years ago)

Clough's there too. I'll miss the first few mins but it's okay, it's not like it's 1974.

Ismael Klata, Wednesday, 29 February 2012 19:26 (thirteen years ago)

Parts 1-4/14

Kick off starts at 8.40ish in the first youtube clip. Lets hope for a classic. Forza Holland! Or the Dutch equivilant of Forza Holland.

Dutch snapping at heels early doors, referee stamping his authority.

knocked over like the last act in Mackbeth (onimo), Wednesday, 29 February 2012 19:35 (thirteen years ago)

Some nice tricky dribbling from Olguin, I think. Keep thinking 'Higuain?' when they say his name.

OOF Rep really close with a header there.

a hoy hoy, Wednesday, 29 February 2012 19:35 (thirteen years ago)

things you don't hear in modern football pt. 1: jack charlton saying "they are playing the normal way, with the sweeper"

pt. 2 the other commentator "started on his first pack of cigarrettes and the manager usually gets through four a game. no wonder he says the game is killing him."

a hoy hoy, Wednesday, 29 February 2012 19:37 (thirteen years ago)

Hopefully one day they stop keepers from picking up back passes - too easy for defenders to get out of trouble.

knocked over like the last act in Mackbeth (onimo), Wednesday, 29 February 2012 19:37 (thirteen years ago)

goalkeeper wearing #8 wtf

a hoy hoy, Wednesday, 29 February 2012 19:38 (thirteen years ago)

my stream's a couple of minutes behind, just got to that great headed chance

knocked over like the last act in Mackbeth (onimo), Wednesday, 29 February 2012 19:38 (thirteen years ago)

and the argentine keeper wearing #5. lol foreigners amirite

a hoy hoy, Wednesday, 29 February 2012 19:39 (thirteen years ago)

Ardilles already causing Holland trouble. If that offside trap and high line is not perfect just one time they are gonna be fucked.

a hoy hoy, Wednesday, 29 February 2012 19:40 (thirteen years ago)

The pitch is a mess. Who gave the fans all that toilet roll to throw?

Kempes been quiet so far. And he just miskicked it out for a throw. Hype schmype.

a hoy hoy, Wednesday, 29 February 2012 19:43 (thirteen years ago)

oof that was nasty by ruud krul. one day they need to stamp these tackles out, instead of just giving a yellow.

a hoy hoy, Wednesday, 29 February 2012 19:45 (thirteen years ago)

Rush of blood by the keeper, lucky to get away with that.

Ismael Klata, Wednesday, 29 February 2012 19:49 (thirteen years ago)

ha, just got to that chance through on goal that the goalie picked up after a passback. So odd seeing something that I've been conditioned to think of being a chance but actually being easy enough to defend against.

get ready for the banter (NotEnough), Wednesday, 29 February 2012 19:51 (thirteen years ago)

Anyone else kinda thinking that Holland are playing more long ball than Argentina, who are treating Ardilles as a playmaker they should crowd around?

Surprised at this tbh, considering their rep, no pun intended.

GOAL! Shocking defending, cracking finish!

a hoy hoy, Wednesday, 29 February 2012 19:54 (thirteen years ago)

Ooh, huge chance for Passarella. Cool-looking fella he is.

Ismael Klata, Wednesday, 29 February 2012 19:55 (thirteen years ago)

oh shit wait, dunno why i thought that was a goal. bad commentating.

a hoy hoy, Wednesday, 29 February 2012 19:56 (thirteen years ago)

Always blame the commentating.

a hoy hoy, Wednesday, 29 February 2012 19:56 (thirteen years ago)

Ismael Klata, Wednesday, 29 February 2012 19:57 (thirteen years ago)

Amazing save off Rep

Ismael Klata, Wednesday, 29 February 2012 19:57 (thirteen years ago)

Ooof that was some save by the Argentina keeper! Rep cunted that, unmarked.

a hoy hoy, Wednesday, 29 February 2012 19:58 (thirteen years ago)

Lol at Neeskens trying to score with a header from outside the box

Ismael Klata, Wednesday, 29 February 2012 19:58 (thirteen years ago)

great save!

Magical. Game over.

Ismael Klata, Wednesday, 29 February 2012 21:55 (thirteen years ago)

sorry to have missed this, looks like it was fun. didn't even play my part by ripping the pish out of the losing holland fans i saw on the bus home, either.

shart practice (Merdeyeux), Thursday, 1 March 2012 00:32 (thirteen years ago)

Passarella straight entered my Favourite Players list after last night.

Ardilles was fucking killer. Xavi must have studied his tapes.

Total football looks like a shitty myth, on the back of 1 game from a whole decade of it. I guess I need to see something with some actual Johan.

a hoy hoy, Thursday, 1 March 2012 07:21 (thirteen years ago)

I think CLASSIC GAMES ON ILF #1 was pretty successful though? I think we learnt some stuff from it - maybe publicise it more the week before hand, find out about footage's kick offs/half times etc., try to get Clough involved some how...

a hoy hoy, Thursday, 1 March 2012 07:23 (thirteen years ago)

It was great. What a game to kick off with though, we'll be doing well to match that.

I was really surprised how fast it was, not so much in terms of circulating the ball as in the players just being keen to get on with things. Goalies trying really hard to get play moving fast even when they didn't need to and were being crowded out; only two injury breaks and they were both due to guys getting properly poleaxed; very little timewasting as such until the very end; etc. I was expecting the opposite.

Ismael Klata, Thursday, 1 March 2012 07:40 (thirteen years ago)

3-1 was about right on balance of play. probably safest for all concerned that it didn't go to penalties.

get ready for the banter (NotEnough), Thursday, 1 March 2012 08:52 (thirteen years ago)

Last night was great, we should do this more often. Nominating someone as timekeeper to call out the youtube parts was a good idea, that needs to happen in the future. Tho maybe do it on a day when there isn't any ACTUAL football on? Seems like folks were frontin' on not caring about international friendlies.

get ready for the banter (NotEnough), Thursday, 1 March 2012 08:54 (thirteen years ago)

pffft last night was not actual football

a hoy hoy, Thursday, 1 March 2012 13:32 (thirteen years ago)

I know this, you know this, but maybe not everyone is as enlightened regarding meaningless friendlies as you and I.

get ready for the banter (NotEnough), Thursday, 1 March 2012 13:53 (thirteen years ago)

this thread has me wondering how hard it would be to make a watching room with chatz - like outloud with youtubes instead of music

I've just checked this out, and it looks like it can be done through tinychat.com. They've even got a built in youtube streaming bit so it's easy to set up a playlist of sorts. Looks promising!

a hoy hoy, Thursday, 1 March 2012 18:48 (thirteen years ago)

two weeks pass...

i gave this a watch last night. thought it was interesting to contrast Haan and Ardiles who I guess were the main playmakers. Ardlies looked class but faded pretty early on. In the second half Haan was everywhere, had a couple of sweet long range shots iirc and did plenty of tackling back. Kempes was MOTM but Haan was probably second for me. Olguin wasn't far behind either.

kid steel (cajunsunday), Tuesday, 20 March 2012 12:21 (thirteen years ago)

We should do this again some time. Yesterday would have been a perfect time, I was really in the mood to watch something and Roma-Genoa didn't interest me enough as seemingly the only game on in Europe.
