Haven't even watched the others yet but i'll probably be voting for Ernie Hunt

Number None, Monday, 26 March 2012 18:20 (thirteen years ago)

Amazing novelty goal. Nice manly celebration too.

Ismael Klata, Monday, 26 March 2012 18:25 (thirteen years ago)

a goal so good the bastards had to change the rules

Number None, Monday, 26 March 2012 18:27 (thirteen years ago)

Radford - a fine strike alright, but it's really about the occasion.

Ismael Klata, Monday, 26 March 2012 18:46 (thirteen years ago)

Osgood - meh, lots of time to set himself and it's not even that far out.

Ismael Klata, Monday, 26 March 2012 18:49 (thirteen years ago)

Mullery - much better than it looks, the element of surprise is all.

Ismael Klata, Monday, 26 March 2012 18:50 (thirteen years ago)

Walsh - crikey, pick that fucker out! Strength, vision, precision.

Ismael Klata, Monday, 26 March 2012 18:52 (thirteen years ago)

Francis - nice enough counterattack, but not actually that fast or requiring amazing movement or anything.

Ismael Klata, Monday, 26 March 2012 18:54 (thirteen years ago)

Where's 69/70 btw? Slack ringmastering imo.

Ismael Klata, Monday, 26 March 2012 18:55 (thirteen years ago)

McDermott - that's a beauty, sweeet disguise on the chip.

Ismael Klata, Monday, 26 March 2012 18:57 (thirteen years ago)

Gemmill - more theatre than Francis, bonus point for managing that on a pitch like that.

Ismael Klata, Monday, 26 March 2012 18:59 (thirteen years ago)

Kennedy - jeez, what a touch! And rounding the keeper bonus too.

Ismael Klata, Monday, 26 March 2012 19:00 (thirteen years ago)

Fashanu - hell yeah, can't fault that for anything.

Ismael Klata, Monday, 26 March 2012 19:03 (thirteen years ago)

voted Walsh

These are all from MOTD and as far as I can tell, there was none before 70/71. Feel free to correct me.

Voted Fashanu.

Gonna do all 4 decades and then a final four type situation to find the best goal evah in televised english football

Thoughts? You must have loads. (a hoy hoy), Monday, 26 March 2012 19:12 (thirteen years ago)

Unorthodox including anything before 1992, but it might just work.

Ismael Klata, Monday, 26 March 2012 19:17 (thirteen years ago)

mullery goal is the best of the lot for me

Michael B Higgins (Michael B), Monday, 26 March 2012 20:26 (thirteen years ago)

What a hidden gem Ronnie Radford goal is. I'm surprised the BBC haven't shown that one since 1973. To me it really captures a certain something....call it the....I don't know, 'magic' of the FA Cup.

Let's Talk About Socks (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Monday, 26 March 2012 22:04 (thirteen years ago)

it was between walsh and fashnu for me. went for walsh because it combines so many good things. the chest control, the run, the turn inside and the finish.

Walsh's seems so ~modern~ in its greatness. Francis' and Gemmill's quite the opposite, I guess it was a novelty to be able to string a few passes together when all English football was played in mud baths.

Seem to remember the Mickey Walsh goal was always singled out as a particularly special one

Charles Kennedy Jumped Up, He Called 'Oh No'. (Tom D.), Tuesday, 27 March 2012 09:21 (thirteen years ago)

Though nowadays I don't suppose many people had heard of it or seen it

i always think of that Ernie Hunt goal as being Willie Carr's, probably cos of Wolves Legernd bias

I think that's what's called an assist in modern parlance

yeah iirc it was my favourite goal on the 101 Great Goals VHS, although in my head it was from near the touchline so r'ing c maybe not my strong point

Cantera: Vulgar Display Of Puyol (DJ Mencap), Tuesday, 27 March 2012 18:51 (thirteen years ago)

watching again the Fashanu goal pwns it in terms of technique and is 'more unstoppable' as it were so I voted for it

refuse to believe there weren't better goals than Osgood's in that season wtf

Cantera: Vulgar Display Of Puyol (DJ Mencap), Tuesday, 27 March 2012 18:57 (thirteen years ago)

Yeah when Merdeyeux said 'Walsh's seems so ~modern~ in its greatness' it got me wondering whether there wouldve been goals then that look amazing to us, but were just 'meh' to seventies dudes. The alternative, that old footy was actually rubbish, is not a truth I feel able to take on board right now.

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 27 March 2012 19:04 (thirteen years ago)

Radford vs Walsh vs Fashanu

Wrong Archie Gemmill goal from 1978 imo (or do international ones not count?)

Valéry Giscard d'Staind (NickB), Tuesday, 27 March 2012 19:24 (thirteen years ago)

In general, the winning goal has occurred for an English side within the domestic English league or cups, although these are not particular rules—Kenny Dalglish's goal in 1982–83 for Scotland being an example. The goal usually comes from competitions to which the BBC holds television rights and which are shown under the MoTD banner—at present Premier League highlights—although some have come from the equivalent Sportscene broadcast by BBC Scotland. Due to the lack of BBC European club football coverage, held predominantly by ITV and Sky, no goal of the season has ever been scored in European club competition despite many contenders.

Far less football was televised then so there was a much smaller from which to pick the winner.

Let's Talk About Socks (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Tuesday, 27 March 2012 19:38 (thirteen years ago)

That's a point. There was a piece in WSC recently identifying the last goal to be scored without being filmed. It happened about 1990, as I recall.

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 27 March 2012 19:43 (thirteen years ago)

Last top flight goal?

I think ITV started showing all of the Saturday games' goals at half-time during Sunday's The Match* in the 88-89 season. Before that I think a good 70% or more of goals were never filmed.

*It was called that, wasn't it? Not 'The Big Match' - that was earlier in the 80s?

Let's Talk About Socks (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Tuesday, 27 March 2012 19:48 (thirteen years ago)

The last unrecorded top-flight game was Sheffield Wednesday v Manchester City, New Year's Day 1990. David Hirst scored the first in a 2-0 win than had to go in goal when Kevin Pressman got injured. It doesn't say who scored the second, but it appears to have the honour.

Though there is still the odd cock-up. A power failure in a TV truck obliterated virtually all footage of Vladimir Smicer's goal for Liverpool in a 2-2 draw at Man City in 2003. The only surviving clip is an unwatchable grainy long-range shot more suited to the X-files.

There's also David James playing up front for Man City, which I don't believe ever happened because how come it never gets repeated?

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 27 March 2012 20:04 (thirteen years ago)

"An early start caught out our cameraman," says Jim Rosenthal of the Hirst debacle. NB that two cameras per game became the norm in 1990.

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 27 March 2012 20:06 (thirteen years ago)

Think David James won a penalty in that match which Robbie Fowler missed.
xp

r|t|c, Wednesday, 28 March 2012 13:23 (thirteen years ago)

saying all that francis' is iconic in its simplicity imo but perhaps i'm biased

r|t|c, Wednesday, 28 March 2012 13:25 (thirteen years ago)

Mullery's gets better with every viewing, I may have voted too hastily.
