Do we have any southern american club football experts here? I like the idea of teams travelling 10 weeks to get to an away match. I watched about 5 minutes of a Peru premier league match after hearing Tim Vickery waxing about Sporting Cristal, so I guess that makes me an expert.

I occasionally watch chilean football.i follow u de chile.
― zverotic discourse (jim in glasgow), Wednesday, 18 April 2012 12:21 (thirteen years ago)
this thread is going to be a winner, i can tell.
chilean football, the only south american football ive watched enough of to comment on, is fairly terrible, with some bright talent appearing periodically and then leaving for argentina/europe. an indication of how bad chilean football is: it's full of argentinians but i read an article a couple months ago that a player who plays for u de c was being considered for an argentina call-up, which would make him the first chilean based argentinian to ever get his first cap while playing for a chilean club (and in the end he didnt even get the cap).

I was reading somewhere that uni de chile play a bit like a bielsa team. are they good to watch? how did you get into chilean football?
― kid steel (cajunsunday), Wednesday, 18 April 2012 20:46 (thirteen years ago)
the coach sampaoli is openly an admirer of bielsa and plays a very similar game, an attacking 3-4-3 with most of the team participating in attacks and goals distributed throughout the team. they were fun to watch last year when they won both the chilean championships and the copa sudamericana. not watched them this year since they lost their main star eduardo vargas - think a less skilful, more direct alexis sanchéz - to napoli in the winter transfer window. they're running away with the apertura and are on their way to progressing thru the group stages of the libertadores though as far as i can remember.

For reasons that I'm not entirely sure of I am currently watching Denilsen, Jadson and Luis Fabiano for Sao Paulo narrowly beating Botafogo 1-0, v nice finsih by Jadson. Botafogo also have a Jadson but he's not the famous one. Sao Paulo have a Lucas which cheers me up. I don't really understand the Brazilian Lge schedule as apparently this is the opening game of the season but Denilsen has been there since August? So has he already played a season? I'm confused. The pitch isn't up to much and the Sao Paulo defence looks wretched so maybe Botafogo can come back in the 2nd half. Also the commentators reckon Santos will swap Ganso for Robinho this summer.
― pandemic, Monday, 21 May 2012 10:01 (twelve years ago)
Brazil runs its season in two parts iirc - the state championships are in the first half of the year and the Campeonato Brasileiro is in the second, finishing around Christmas. If São Paulo (São Paulo state) are playing Botafogo (Rio de Janeiro state) this must be the opening of the CB, I'm guessing.
― Ismael Klata, Monday, 21 May 2012 10:07 (twelve years ago)
Aw thanks. Yes, it appears you are correct.
― pandemic, Monday, 21 May 2012 10:10 (twelve years ago)
Botafogo did indeed manage an equalizer, but Fabiano has just dispatched a Jadson cross. 2-1 Sao Paulo.
― pandemic, Monday, 21 May 2012 10:17 (twelve years ago)
Now Botafogo come back to lead 3-2. Good, if slightly haphazard, stuff this.
― pandemic, Monday, 21 May 2012 10:28 (twelve years ago)
4-2 Botafogo. Herrera (who only came on at half-time) gets his hat-trick!
― pandemic, Monday, 21 May 2012 10:33 (twelve years ago)
According to the Sky planner Botafogo have a rightback called John Lennon. Don't think he played did he? Only saw the 1st half, didn't hear him mentioned.
― Chris, Monday, 21 May 2012 14:14 (twelve years ago)
No, I was listening out for him :)

What are the chances of him ending up at Liverpool, if only for the shirt sales?

The defending champions, Boca have 32 points from 16 games with three to play in the Clausura championship, the second league tournament of the complex Argentina season.
Tigre have 29 points after Mariano Echeverría gave them a 1-1 draw at Atlético Rafaela, where Alexis Castro opened the scoring just after half-time. However, Tigre dropped to 19th in the relegation standings, which are decided over three seasons, putting them back in the danger zone.
It's nice to have everything up for grabs at season's end, but this is ridiculous.
― Ismael Klata, Wednesday, 30 May 2012 07:49 (twelve years ago)
lol, no way would I be able to deal with following the EPL if it was formatted like that.
― pandemic, Wednesday, 30 May 2012 09:28 (twelve years ago)
One game to go now, and Boca have screwed up by losing 3-0 at home to Arsenal, who now lead the table from Tigre on goals scored. Neither of these have ever won the title before. Both have home games against midtable opponents (Belgrano and Indepediente) in their final fixture. Boca are the only other side who can win: they are two points behind.
Tigre are out of the relegation playoff places only by a whisker - 0.004 points average - so it's still possible that they could win the league while being simultaneously relegated.
― Ismael Klata, Monday, 18 June 2012 10:20 (twelve years ago)
Arsenal fans rejoice! This lot do hold their nerve, 1-0 winners over Belgrano, while Tigre draw 2-2 with Independiente (thereby also avoiding the drop, so some consolation). They seem to be the smallest club in the league, so extra well done them.

Second leg was last night but I forgot all about it. 2-0 to Corinthians, who win 4-1 on points for their first title. Riquelme announced that he was leaving Boca as he's no energy left to give - I don't know whether this means he's retired or not.
― Ismael Klata, Thursday, 5 July 2012 09:49 (twelve years ago)
"This afternoon, I spoke with the president and informed him that I would not continue," Riquelme told reporters. "I am very grateful to the club and the team, I know I am, but I have nothing left to give the club, I'm empty.
"The relationship I share with Boca is great, I'm a fan of this club but now I have reached the end of the road.
"Now I just want to go home, have a barbecue with my friends, see my children and greet them. All I ask is for forgiveness from my child that I could not win the cup again."

Magnificent example of the thread title in action tonight - Jorge Wilstermann, who play at an altitude of 8300 feet, lost the away leg of their Copa Libertadores qualifier against Vasco de Gama 4-0 and are leading the home tie 3-0 at half time.
