Poll of the Season Part 2: The Eighties

Harder to find them this time as individual clips

BIG DISCLAIMER: I don't know which Ian Wright goal is the GOTS. The first is v. nice and I think it is that, but his second is a sweet team goal. The time mentioned is to the first one.

Interesting thing to note about the Houchen goal- it happened in Extra Time in the FA Cup final. For some reason I always thought the BBC, when I was a kid and they had the FA Cup, would declare GOTS on FA Cup final day though. Did they have no other goals worth considering and just went with the importance angle? Oh and its not the only Cup Final goal - Aldridge's v. Everton and Ian Wright's goal are too.

That said, only 3 of these are from the First Division. MoTD still owned the rights to show highlights, right?

pet tommy & the barkhaters (darraghmac), Tuesday, 15 May 2012 15:39 (twelve years ago)

Morley - nice counterattack, probably favourite genre in fact, though the terrible pitch and bustling running detracts from the majesty a bit. It's not like the Russian effort v Netherlands in 2008, which is a kind of gold standard for me.

The Eisensteinian jump-cutting at the start is disorientating too.

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 15 May 2012 16:28 (twelve years ago)

Regis - more camera trickery, but there's no detracting from this 'un. A veritable bazowitzooka.

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 15 May 2012 16:30 (twelve years ago)

Dalglish - crikey, he was a bit good. I'd've been as happy watching the first goal actually.

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 15 May 2012 16:32 (twelve years ago)

Wallace - sweet strike. Reminiscent of that Rooney goal THAT time.

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 15 May 2012 16:34 (twelve years ago)

Not so nice to see the fences though.

Sharp - yeah great, but what is he doing shooting from there?

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 15 May 2012 16:37 (twelve years ago)

Robson - this must have been the year of the blackout then?

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 15 May 2012 16:38 (twelve years ago)

Houchen - gets better on repeat viewings. Perfect header, even if not actually that hard. Extra points for the occasion.

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 15 May 2012 16:40 (twelve years ago)

Aldridge (1) - fine goal, but not actually that amazing is it?

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 15 May 2012 16:43 (twelve years ago)

Aldridge (2) - looks good, but hard to tell when the video is compiled entirely from rejected footage from weird angles. I do remember thinking Stuart McCall's strike was incredible at the time though, glad to see it stands up.

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 15 May 2012 16:46 (twelve years ago)

Wright - can't see this on my phone unfortunately.

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 15 May 2012 16:48 (twelve years ago)

morley, good hit but dribble nbd besides its speed, defender begged him inside
regis, control & bosh, meh
dalglish, aye pure class
wallace, p good, probably more exotic then
sharp, satisfying
robson, perfect execution but training ground stuff
houchen, proper diving header in a cup final is unfuckwithable
aldridge, i'm not the type to have a sherman over a good team goal unless its ott
aldridge, eh why is this even here
wright, superb

winner houchen from a fairly crap selection

70s > 80s judging by this

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 15 May 2012 16:53 (twelve years ago)

yeah by miles

r|t|c, Tuesday, 15 May 2012 16:53 (twelve years ago)

Wright - assuming it's the first, but both v good. What a pity they couldn't hold on.

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 15 May 2012 17:00 (twelve years ago)

Went with Houchen too, slightly ahead of Sharp.

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 15 May 2012 17:01 (twelve years ago)

I reckon if you compiled a top ten from the 86 World Cup they would all be better than these

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 15 May 2012 17:07 (twelve years ago)

hoddle scored ten better goals than this in the 80's

pet tommy & the barkhaters (darraghmac), Tuesday, 15 May 2012 17:11 (twelve years ago)

Zounds! That Whelan goal! It's nearly the best goal from that tourney.

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 15 May 2012 17:15 (twelve years ago)

Was between Regis and Sharp for me. Regis gets it tho.

83-84, suspect Wallace got the nod for novelty value as suggested above but this still melts my mind

you can call this waste defending if you like I dgaf

cissémanwhore (DJ Mencap), Tuesday, 15 May 2012 19:06 (twelve years ago)

did anyone else watch all the goals on the 85-86 clip? there's some definitive perfunctoriness in there (tho no more so than eg Aldridge's cup final goal) but I'd've voted for Stapleton on the basis of Strachan's pass alone

cissémanwhore (DJ Mencap), Tuesday, 15 May 2012 19:08 (twelve years ago)

Much weirdness in that 85/86 clip: the state of the Vicarage Road pitch; the City Ground having the stanchion-things on top of the goal; a huge advert for Yamaha Clavinovas at the Israel-England game (why?!); Johnny Metgod's free kick sailing straight through the keeper.

The guy posting it says that was the year of the blackout, right enough.

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 15 May 2012 19:28 (twelve years ago)

dalglish

terrible list

navihchkan (nakhchivan), Tuesday, 15 May 2012 19:41 (twelve years ago)

whelan vs ussr, and yr motd can gtf

love this goal but he did shin it

Michael B Higgins (Michael B), Tuesday, 15 May 2012 20:06 (twelve years ago)

The way Hoddle beats the keeper in that second clip!

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 15 May 2012 20:13 (twelve years ago)

can't believe ismael hadn't known about whelan's goal

nor ever youtubed hoddle highlights

letiss was, essentially, the unmotivated hoddle, but without the pace and not quite as two-footed

pet tommy & the barkhaters (darraghmac), Tuesday, 15 May 2012 22:24 (twelve years ago)

I'm pretty sure I'd seen it before, but scrubbed it from my memory for sheer implausibility.

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

No problem. I was bored on the train one day when I had the flash of insight that it'd work if you separated poll options and formatting. I felt like Archimedes.

Ismael Klata, Wednesday, 23 May 2012 07:10 (twelve years ago)

Just seen this thread - heading back to work now, but will vote later, two quick things:

Interesting thing to note about the Houchen goal- it happened in Extra Time in the FA Cup final.
Is this the famous diving header? If so, I think it was in the first ten minutes of the match. Either it happened first and then Clive Allen equalised, or vice versa, but I think there were two early goals. The extra time winner was a Gary Mabbutt own goal.

MoTD still owned the rights to show highlights, right?
Not all the time. From 1988 to the start of the Premier League in 1992, ITV had all the highlights and live league games, BBC just had the FA Cup. So their choice of GOTS was severely limited.

Pacific Trash Vortex (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Wednesday, 23 May 2012 17:36 (twelve years ago)

Right, seen them now. I remember being amazed by the Danny Wallace one at the time. The Houchen header is great, but not quite as great as I misremembered it. I've gone for Wright, as much for the circumstances as the execution.

Pacific Trash Vortex (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Wednesday, 23 May 2012 21:56 (twelve years ago)

Take a look at the Guardian's best goals of the season just past and marvel at the leap the game has made in just two decades.
