Will things turn sour after a Hodgsonesque six months or will he be treated to a right royal King Kenny year and a bit?

anyway bren will be at liverpool for a long time since obv when he wins the league next year they can't sack him.

Hodgson was kind of in the eye of the storm moment for Liverpool (chiefly boardroom/financial farce) but Rogers has the edge over him in so many areas. Chiefly identifying talent (Hodgson's Fulham team was great but there was basically zero imagination in his signings). And he has the edge over Dalglish in being able to organise a midfield and defence very well.

Depends on the signings he makes I suppose? I can't see him wasting Kenny levels of money but the possibility remains of him signing a load of rough diamond types for a bargain who can't quite assimilate quickly enough.

Homosexual Satan Wasp (Matt DC), Thursday, 31 May 2012 12:40 (twelve years ago)

Even if he wasn't able to sign anyone, a decent coach should do better than they did this year.

ooooiiiioooooooooooooooaaaaaaaaoooooh un - bi - leevable! (LocalGarda), Thursday, 31 May 2012 12:43 (twelve years ago)

Stating the obvious maybe but Stevie G really does not strike me as a Brendan Rogers kind of player at all.

Might finally sign some decent wingers through.

Homosexual Satan Wasp (Matt DC), Thursday, 31 May 2012 12:44 (twelve years ago)

That's the biggest immediate challenge, the way I see it. Whoever he'd been covering a couple of weeks ago, he'll now have a budget for entirely different players. Does he stick with those targets or quickly try to find new ones?

Ismael Klata, Thursday, 31 May 2012 12:45 (twelve years ago)

Stevie G has been crap for 3 seasons now. Like really crap. He was brilliant in 2008/2009 but he has been nothing but SHIT since, it's not even his style of play, he just no longer does anything whatsoever.

ooooiiiioooooooooooooooaaaaaaaaoooooh un - bi - leevable! (LocalGarda), Thursday, 31 May 2012 12:47 (twelve years ago)

I wonder what sort of result you'd get if you just stuck most of the Swansea midfield in front of Lucas and then signed a proper finisher.

Homosexual Satan Wasp (Matt DC), Thursday, 31 May 2012 12:50 (twelve years ago)

Maxi - Henderson - Lucas - Aquilani - Cole

that'd be worth a try, if they could all be got fit and in one place

a permanent embarrassment and an occasional disgrace (onimo), Thursday, 31 May 2012 13:39 (twelve years ago)

sterling seems like a brendan kind of player as well

i guess the possible argument against him would be that at swansea he was building on perfect foundations post-martinez but he couldnt get it going quick enough on reading's baser earth. swansea rather hit the wall toward the end of last season as well, but you could put that down to personnel limitations i suppose - the dos santos rumour showed that he correctly saw where the problem was at least.

a good manager and a good gamble on the whole imo though. transfer record is pretty impeccable as well, don't forget spotting fabio borini from chelsea's reserves last season who's now in the italy squad

r|t|c, Thursday, 31 May 2012 14:50 (twelve years ago)

voted other. i can see him doing p well for 2 or 3 seasons, getting liverpool back into the top 5 or 6 and then them going for a bigger, more expensive name to make the push back to where they 'should' be. plus liverpool aren't exactly known for rash decisions when it comes to managers - of the past four, you could possibly argue all of them were held on to for too long - so i think he'll be given some leeway when the likes of carroll and carragher don't fit his thinking.

Smothered, Covered and Chunked!!! (a hoy hoy), Thursday, 31 May 2012 16:24 (twelve years ago)

I suppose on one view Hodgson *was* kept on too long, but you can't exactly hand out loyalty points for that one.

He'll last a while, there's no expectation at Liverpool this season, even the board aren't expecting a top four finish. Unless they hit relegation type form, which is highly unlikely, he'll last out the season.

It's too early to talk about crises. Other than Chelsea, Swansea and West Brom no one's having a great start to the season.

If you factor in the way Liverpool finished last season, they're on a terrible fucking run of form but Rogers can hardly be blamed for all that.

good chance to waste some serious money this season now he will have the upper hand over the rest of their transfer committee

not that lallana isn't a good player but he will be overpriced and isn't demonstrably better than countinho or sterling

Little Saint Hugh of Lincoln (nakhchivan), Monday, 12 May 2014 11:43 (ten years ago)

Suso and Borini back hopefully. Lallana's okay, I'd prefer Rakitic though.

what do you think of sahko

Little Saint Hugh of Lincoln (nakhchivan), Monday, 12 May 2014 11:51 (ten years ago)

He looks like he should be a strong athletic physically imposing CB. But whenever I've seen him he doesn't play like that. I half suspect he's a player who will never train on like say Micah Richards. Then again if he was alongside a CB with some nous who was comfortable barking orders all game long maybe he'd be better. I'm loath to subscribe to the Carra "what LFC need is some leadership at the back" doctrine but I'm not sure he's entirely wrong. The way the back line drops deep when defending a lead whilst simultaneously looking ropey with dealing with balls into the box ain't a good combination. I'd still expect him to start next season though. Thing is our most experienced defender is Agger and Rodgers clearly doesn't fully trust him.

pandemic, Monday, 12 May 2014 11:58 (ten years ago)

Sakho's also p lousy on the ball imo. Takes an age to decide where to pass it and how.

pandemic, Monday, 12 May 2014 12:05 (ten years ago)

dont think mignolet is much of an organizer either, nor is he particularly adept at passing or control, skrtel is a goon for the ages, gerrard for all the 'quarterback' shit the press throw around sometimes looks positionally uncertain, so that whole area just has a sense of panic about it

wrt sakho his technique isnt quite as bad as some people say but he is really awkward and seems stressed about every single pass he has to make, can almost see the relief every time it rolls away from his feet and is no longer his responsibility for a couple of seconds at least

tiago still possibly a bit frail for the epl but he gives off a sense of calm and composure that would count for something in that defence

Little Saint Hugh of Lincoln (nakhchivan), Monday, 12 May 2014 12:09 (ten years ago)

I really wish we'd been able to get Cabaye. I mean I understand that we stood no chance vs PSG even if we'd been interested but I think he'd be glorious in our midfield.

the final twilight of all evaluative standpoints (nakhchivan), Saturday, 4 October 2014 03:51 (ten years ago)

three weeks pass...

'The first chat I had with him was at Melwood [Liverpool’s training ground], just after he was confirmed as Liverpool’s new manager. It wasn’t a long conversation, just the typical welcome to the club stuff, but he also wanted to talk to me because there had been suggestions there was a chance of me going to Juventus.

'Brendan spoke to me in Spanish and he told me to give him time, to give him a chance, and that I would like the way we were going to play. It would suit me. He said we would bring the ball out on the floor, keep possession and play attacking football. I remember him saying, “It’s not so hard to bring the ball out from the back on the floor, you know”.'

It is clear that the pair had a strong relationship before Suarez's £75million move to Barcelona in July. The 27-year-old continues to explain how Rodgers immediately got him on side with his philosophy.

'From the start, it convinced me. It made sense. And although the results weren’t good, I could see that we were playing better. I was excited. Brendan’s philosophy was to play on the floor, keep possession of the ball and, if we lost it, to pressure to get it back. Don’t panic, don’t play so fast as we had the previous season, look for the spaces at the right time.

'But you could see a Spanish influence in the way that Brendan worked. He was interested in Spain, he had studied there, and what he’d learned there was at the heart of our style of play: passing, pressuring high, quick movement, arriving into the area rather than standing there waiting for it, coming inside from wide positions.'

Stoke played a tight, tidy pressing game without creating too many attacking chances, Liverpool were presumably supposed to be advancing through Coutinho, Sterling or Jordan Henderson with the ball on the floor but ended up lumping hopeful long balls in the direction of Lambert. It produced a stalemate that suited the visitors, one place above Liverpool in the table at the start, but left the locals wondering what exactly Rodgers meant when he said his side could still manage a top-four finish. People are beginning to collect Brendanisms, and there was a marvellous one in the manager’s programme notes. “Only our confidence has been knocked,” he said. “Belief has not been affected.”

Brendan Rodgers described Liverpool’s win over QPR, and a plane carrying a banner calling for him to be replaced as manager by Rafael Benítez, as “insignificant” in the context of Rio Ferdinand’s wife dying from cancer at the age of 34.

The Liverpool manager ended his press conference with a moving tribute to the 36-year-old and his family, saying: “Football was secondary today. Rio Ferdinand has been an incredible player and I heard the news about his wife while driving in today. Planes and everything is insignificant to what Rio and his family are going through.

contendo conformo (Noodle Vague), Sunday, 3 May 2015 09:07 (ten years ago)

Don't particularly want Rodgers out, although tbf the only managers I've ever wanted LFC to sack were Hodgson and Dalglish (2nd time round obv). However if a clearly better manager is available then why not? Rafa is a better manger than Rodgers imo but don't think his return would work out v well. If Klopp was interested then we should be after him absolutely.

Think not getting the team back on track after back to back defeats to Utd and Arsenal is the major black mark on Rodgers since the first few months of his first season. Those 2 losses were fine but allowing the team to seemingly assume that Utd would continue accumulating wins and that 4th place was out of reach considering the gentle nature of the rest of our fixtures (Chelsea away excepted) was p terrible. We've reverted to lots of possession minimal penetration.

Not many players have had a good season. Coutinho, Can, Skrtel, Hendo, Mingolet (2nd half of season) Lucas (when fit) That's about it, which ain't great.

v hard to say - nobody seems to know to what extent rodgers is responsible for signings

bureau belfast model (LocalGarda), Monday, 4 May 2015 10:34 (ten years ago)

i'd guess he doesn't have that much say - he seems to have taken against Balotelli from day 1. but given the hand he was dealt i'd say he's responsible for mismanaging Balotelli and Lambert, amongst others, and refusing to play to their abilities is his decision.

contendo conformo (Noodle Vague), Monday, 4 May 2015 10:41 (ten years ago)

Yeah, sort of fair. Balo has been total muck tho - dunno if he has any strengths. He isn't a lone striker and with Sturridge out he kind of had to be. I guess he could have tried something with Balo and Lambert both together, but I guess every manager has some kind of personal style.

Next season will be the test I suppose - there are some positives from this year, if we can buy the right striker.
