The circus was great and I've got strong memories of that day, and I've seen van Basten's goal enough times since, but still ... At least it wasn't the last-ever occasion I'd be able to watch my country on a football field with pride intact.

I think my interest in this totally evaporated after England lost to Holland and I don't think I watched anything after that (including England's final game and the actual final). In retrospect this seems crazy - it's not as if there was much football on the TV in those days and we were in the middle of the post-Heysel ban so it's not like we got to see foreign/quality football very often.

England-USSR not even screened live, IIRC - Holland-Ireland still had something riding on it, so BBC showed that instead.
Mac simmered but didn't blow up. He eventually lost in the semis to Peter Lundgren. The next year he lost in the first round to Jim Pugh. Becker won the event; Sampras and Ivanisevic were also present. Now...the courts no longer exist.
