Anyway, League Cup today and then the season proper gets going on Friday with Cardiff v Huddersfield, which should be kinda cracking.
The rumour mill's already warming up, too:

Neil Warnock, 2011
“I think for many years I think he’s been the ‘gutter’ type of boy. I was going to call him a sewer rat, but that might insult the sewer rats. I think he’s the lowest of the low.“I can’t see him being at Blackburn much longer because I can’t see Steve Kean putting up with someone like that in the dressing room when he’s creating a new image.“I think he’ll be the first to go. Good riddens. I hope he goes abroad. I won’t miss watching him. Sign him? I wouldn’t want to talk to him.”
Neil Warnock, 2012
"He is good in the dressing room; he is not a bad egg. He is a good lad."

swindon trashed brighton tonight by the looks of it (check the free kick routine for benson's opener if poss), have to go as far as fancying them for the league one title i reckon unless paolo gets poached before seasons end

championship, ooh i dunno maan
gotta be bolton really hasnt it
wolves... could collectively still remember how to win this league but might well be shocked by some of the more enterprising sides like blackpool and cardiff
quite fancy cardiff, bellamy and the iceman up top c'est formidable. malky mackay is great
birmingham.... hmmm, maybs just maybs. lovenkrands and ambrose scoring tonight, look competent
blackburn, championship's even playing field should only show kean up further than the prem already did despite a good team for this level obv
brighton still flaky it seems, forest could be on the outskirts, leicester nah, leeds most probably spoiling their way to the play offs but lets not talk about uncle neil eh

that went much as expected. can't see either of those teams setting the division alight as it stands. defence still rotten. new guys look potentially good, Doumbia impressed me least today i think but playing alongside Karl Henry at centre mid must be like playing in a wheelchair. we desperately need to grab whatever inflated money we can get for Jarvis and Fletcher and buy some footballers with it. straw of comfort - pretty sure Solbakken knew that was shite.

team yesterday very different to the one in the league so far, any idea what the best xi might be yet or still too soon?
― r|t|c, Friday, 31 August 2012 08:26 (twelve years ago)
mostly the new buys i think, all looking good to impressive. at the moment i'd say
Doyle SigurdarsonSako Doumbia Boukari PeszkoWard Margreitter Johnson StearmanIkeme
but central mid is unbalanced there, Boukari is supposed to be a winger tho he looked better inside to me, and Ward, Johnson and Stearman are big question marks. need a left and right back i think, Stears or Johnson probably worth another try at CB, wd like to see Zubar given a run at CB but don't see it happening. Henry seems to be favoured for the holding mid position when he's fit but i hope this is just a hangover from the old regime, there's enough quality in Doumbia to cover him until he can be properly replaced. interesting to see if O'Hara ever gets fit and wants to play again but he looks too similar to Doumbia to put them both in there.
second 11 looks mostly shit to me but as long as we don't lose a lot of key players at once i think we're on the way to an exciting team. loving how Solbakken has paid lip service to continuity but basically admitted thru his signings that we needed a totally new team.
― just one little Tayto (Noodle Vague), Friday, 31 August 2012 08:46 (twelve years ago)
feel like some kind of 4-5-1 or 4-2-3-1 might be in order but not sure Doyler has it in him to be that 1 any more and don't think Solbakken rolls that way. Siggy and Nouble both look like they like to sit v. deep tho

Flavio Briatore is set for a dramatic return to English football as the co-owner of Birmingham City.
The former Queens Park Rangers chief, along with long-time friend Gianni Paladini, is considering a move to buy the npower Championship outfit. Birmingham owner Carson Yeung is seeking new investment and according to the Daily Mirror, Briatore, 62 is weighing up a bid.

"I'm a Birmingham boy myself," Paladini added. "I've always liked Blues and I've got a good relationship with a lot of Zulu Warriors [City's hooligan element], if they're still there I don't know, because I've been at QPR for 11 years.

― r|t|c, Wednesday, 12 September 2012 19:33 (twelve years ago)
Paladini said: "You need people with experience of business, of course, but also experience of running a football club. You have to know football.
"If we took over, I would probably ask someone like Ron Atkinson to help me. I have known Ron for years, we are good friends. He is local, and his knowledge and expertise is great. He is a personality.
"I have offices in London and business to attend to there, so I wouldn’t be at the club all the time. I would need somebody around to help. What type of role? It would be sporting director, something like that maybe."
Birmingham are understood to be unimpressed with Paladini's public courting of the club, with other rival bids expected from consortiums in the Far East and Asia.

for me this isn't about the banality of getting promoted straight away tho. we've had fuck-awful football for as long as i can remember and since the owner appears to be a skinflint we need somebody who can maximize the benefit of having a Category 1 youth academy and bring a long-term footballing ethos to the club whether the Cro-Magnon elements of the support get behind him or not

“Bakary Sako now goes for a few million to Fulham. Not bad for a loser,” said Margreitter, who also discussed his own situation and the possibility of a loan move to the Championship.
― r|t|c, Friday, 17 May 2013 12:19 (eleven years ago)
“Our problem lay in the dressing room,” said Margreitter, who has played just one League game as a substitute since his £500,000 arrival from Austria Vienna last summer.
“Too many players were satisfied. They earn a great deal of money and drive big cars, and they are content with their lot. The hunger that young players bring to a team was simply not there.
“An attitude like that from a club’s leading players is fatal. You could see this in training – quality on paper is not enough.
“When the players were in the Premier League they got a spanking week after week. Some of them probably didn’t want to go back up, preferring a cushy life in the Championship.
“I have never experienced anything like it. At Austria Vienna everyone was hungry and wanted to win games.”
Margreitter claimed the club were too quick to get rid of the man who signed him, Stale Solbakken, and reverted to a more direct style.
“We had a big and well-balanced squad, and Solbakken got us to play cultured football rather than kick and rush,” he said.
“The club was probably too impatient in just giving him six months.
“Dean Saunders then enforced the traditional English virtues, and they did not work.
“The negative spiral continued dragging us down.”
― r|t|c, Friday, 17 May 2013 12:20 (eleven years ago)
