Why? Liverpool aren't going to get back into the Champions League, I doubt it's even a stated goal. They aren't going to get relegated. Why not have a go at actually winning the thing?

I mean I know they have to be careful about injuries etc but at the same time there's no sense keeping them out of the competition altogether in case it disrupts the charge for a top-six finish.

i dunno. we tried that last season and fucked up the league. we're not gonna get top 4, but at the same time we don't want to stagnate or fall too far behind. otherwise how far do you take it? finish 7th this season, go into next season still not likely to get top 4, go for the cups, repeat? i suppose i don't mind some overlap in the teams from thursday to sunday, but i'm still wary of how terribly we managed certain players last season.

ok thinking about it, wanting a completely different 11 was a bit over the top. there's probably no harm in a handful of players playing thursday-sunday, but it's how we manage it further down the line and whether or not we rotate and are sensible about it that i'm worried about. i don't want another lucas on our hands where we play him, play him, play him, keep pushing him and pushing him, and then end up losing him for a year. that was terrible management and still angers me now.

Thinking about this again, I'm not sure I'd be that bothered if they do play in the Europa. Keep stupidity and irresponsibility to be a minimum and it shouldn't be a problem.

i'd say that in terms of a team learning a manager's new ways asap then avb has the right idea playing (or saying he'll play) the first team

There'll be some rotation, maybe a chance to get a better look at people like Dempsey, Lloris, Dembele, Caulker etc. Definitely not a game to start blooding in third-tier players though.
