Quite a lot of ground between slightly and ludicrous, I feel I'd vote somewhere between those two.

Rated about right probably. I mean, he is really fucking good, on the basis of his goalscoring record alone. Not a very popular view round here perhaps but w/e. People wetting themselves over Michu as a midfielder with a striker's goalscoring abilities always seem to forget that Frank has been pumping in 20 goals a season or so across all competitions regular as clockwork for nearly a decade. An easy player to hate, but Chelsea fans must love him pretty much unconditionally at this point.

Windsor Davies, Sunday, 13 January 2013 11:15 (twelve years ago)

At this stage, Gerrard is the more overrated of the two sacred cow England midfielders. I mean Lampard has always been the more consistent of the two, but Lampard never really had those Hollywood moments where he looked like he was single-handedly saving his team from the jaws of disaster. Probably as a result of playing in a better team for most of his career.

His passing his pretty good but not world class, he used to be able to run tirelessly and created a lot and yeah scored a fuckload but he just... never seems to do very much that looks impressive. Now his pace is going, and he was never that fast in the first place, he tends to slow a midfield down and he doesn't have the vision to drop into a deeper role that would prolong his career like, say, Scholes. He was ludicrously overrated at his peak, never really a world class midfielder, now he's probably rated about right.

I hate him and think he's a fat clown, if I were Chelsea I'd probably keep him around and let him retire there. But there does seem to be some evidence that his totemic value to Chelsea is holding the longer-term development of the squad back. But then Chelsea themselves keep acting like idiots in that regard, so who knows.

I always wondered how he'd have done in Serie A, but the fact that he was actually voted the second best player in the world behind Ronaldinho, by people voting with a straight face, is almost entirely down to Mourinho being prepared to build a team around him and a system in which he could be consistently effective. Plonk him straight into any other team and I doubt that would have happened, as successive England managers found out.

Matt DC, Sunday, 13 January 2013 12:28 (twelve years ago)

I mean now he is older and slower and when he's off his game he can look an utter clunker, I can see why he never fit into the system AVB was trying to build, he can only really play one way and trying to get him to do anything else shows up his limitations, but the same is true for an awful lot of players.

Matt DC, Sunday, 13 January 2013 12:30 (twelve years ago)

a more measured version of a lot of what i was thinking, i guess. still baffled by some of the ludicrous hyperbole radio and TV pundits drool over him, you'd be pushed to find a moment when he was the best midfielder at his club never mind the world

non-elitist melted poo (Noodle Vague), Sunday, 13 January 2013 12:31 (twelve years ago)

Also his general movement off the ball has never seemed that good by fancy modern European standards, he always seems to be running up and down in a straight line, but he was and probably still is exceptionally good at timing a run which explains his goalscoring record.

I'd hazard a guess that he's probably the player who has accumulated more Fantasy League points than any other in like ten years as well.

Matt DC, Sunday, 13 January 2013 12:37 (twelve years ago)

Never been aware of Lampard being talked of hyperbolically that often, I'm probably not paying enough attention, there is certainly no comparison to Gerrard, who is in a field of his own when it comes to being overrated by his admirers

England and Chelsea footballer Frank Lampard is to write a series of children's books, publisher Little Brown has announced.

The midfielder, whose contract expires at the end of the season, will pen five books, called Frankie's Magic Football, for children aged five and above.

Apparently there will be characters based on his team mates over the years.

Perhaps there will be a sleepy steam engine based on Michael Essien.

Hi,

We’re now really close to our session with Chelsea and England footballer Frank Lampard and are putting out a last call for commissions for what has proven to be a very popular pitch.

With 100 England caps and well over 150 Premier League goals, Lampard remains, at 35, one of the biggest names in football, nationally and internationally. As he releases the third in a series of children’s books, he’s added another string to his bow and proved there’s much more than meets the eye.

Editors are invited to submit commissions (all titles and final copy are subject to agent/PR approval). We can produce written-through or Q&A-style bespoke features to any word length and brief, with boxouts and approved high-res images as free optional extras.

If this is of interest it’d be great to hear back from you. If it’s not, and you wish to be unsubscribed from further communication, we apologise for the interruption, and request you click the ‘unsubscribe’ link at the foot of the email.

Thanks for your time,
