He was kinda overrated a couple of years back, when he was very poor for them, but he's improved. Never a player that's going to get the blood racing though.

No one says "the British Pirlo" with a straight face. "The closest England have to Pirlo" is a different thing although I accept it's making the word 'closest' do a lot of work.

i heard somebody on 5 Live - forget who, possibly Ron Atkinson??? - talk about him in the same sentence as Pirlo only the other night

anyway the England team wd have been less of a farce with a few more boring Carrick-esque dudes over the last 10 year

He's come on a lot defensively tbh. His crabwise passing metronomy is an overrated aspect of his game, one that england and utd both can do without or can better with other players i think
