680 matches fixed around the world, one of them was a Champions League game played in England within the last three or four years.

So which match do you reckon it was?

last three or four years? That's Liverpool largely in the clear.

I dunno, which matches did City not lose?

If you were tryig to fix a match to cash in at the bookies (as opposed to getting your team into the next round via a bribe) you'd probably try not to draw too much attention to it. So, for example, that infamous Chelsea v Barcelona match a few years ago ("it's a fucking disgrace!" etc.) probably isn't the kind of thing you'd want. I think it's more likely to be a match where nothing much is riding on it - either a dead rubber where a team has already qualified, or maybe a stronger team beating a weaker team (as expected) with a little helping hand from the ref if needed.

"German police described a global network involving couriers ferrying bribes of up to £86,000 per match around the world, paying off players and referees."

That's not actually enough money to make it likely that any Prem-club players were paid off, more likely the ref/linesmen. I guess they might not necessarily fix the whole match, but do things like 'first yellow card'.

Actually, thinking about it, it *must* have been when Barcelona won the final at Wembley against United. I can't think of any other way that could have happened.

They suggest that Debrecen goalkeeper Vukasin Poleksic was bribed to ensure that there were over 2.5 goals in the match.

However, Liverpool had a poor night in front of goal and Poleksic only conceded one, where he punched out a shot from Fernando Torres into the path of Dirk Kuyt to claim the winner.

In text messages recovered by police – the people behind the match fixing bemoaned the fact Steven Gerrard missed some presentable chances against Debrecen.
