Over the last season is a fair answer

lance armstrong will have been delighted (darraghmac), Monday, 25 February 2013 22:03 (twelve years ago)

Yis. I would be lying if I hadn't been Debbie-Doubting on Bale until about 4 months ago. Was quite convinced that he was a good winger with electric pace who'd been made to look world class one night by Maicon not doing his homework properly. Needless to say, I'm a now Bale-iever. GB11 eh? I fucking hope and pray that he doesn't move to Real.

Windsor Davies, Monday, 25 February 2013 22:25 (twelve years ago)

Serious answer? Probably this season, if only because he was so unbelievably frustrating in the second half of last season. But really I'm voting with my heart and going for the Inter game.

but I also said he was closer to Krasic (wtf happened to him btw, knew he was shit) and Valencia than Ronaldo, so I guess I was wrong.

boxall, Monday, 4 March 2013 04:06 (twelve years ago)

krasic was the most similar player to bale-as-winger and he looked a very fine player a couple of years ago

juventus was completely the wrong team tho and once the 3-5-2 took shape he was finished there

I don't really understand why he couldn't cut it in the new system though, Juve play attacking wing-backs, he wasn't better than Lichtsteiner? xxl

boxall, Tuesday, 5 March 2013 04:04 (twelve years ago)

Did he have the defensive chops to man a flank more or less single handed though? I know that it never quite works like that in the system in practice, but I've always thought playing as a wing back must be a seriously tough job

Windsor Davies, Tuesday, 5 March 2013 10:01 (twelve years ago)

Lennon, walker, ekotto all better at wingback than bale,

poll that whitey music pfunkboy (darraghmac), Tuesday, 5 March 2013 10:06 (twelve years ago)

i don't think krasic has the defensive aptitude for wingback, he was at his best wide rw in a 4-2-3-1

Nilmar Honorato da Silva, Tuesday, 5 March 2013 10:27 (twelve years ago)

I have never doubted Gareth Bale as an attacking force, with the exception of late last season when he was being a dick. My early posts are full of praise, even in the dark days of the Ramos era.

so can sunderland find the cash for rooney?

Tioc Norris (LocalGarda), Thursday, 7 March 2013 09:43 (twelve years ago)

Seems like we'll offer bale 150k pw rather than selling him to a club good enough for him

don't believe that for a sec but if twere true i'd rather 50m and 75k pw freed up for a lw replacement and top four striker than wrecking the wage structure in order to continue relying on one player's form/fitness

i don't have to be fair, i'm *right* (darraghmac), Thursday, 7 March 2013 10:01 (twelve years ago)

Surely there'd still be money for a top-four striker if they were paying Bale ££££££? It's probably not an either / or.

Lord knows who'd take Rooney for £40m apart from Anzhi.

Des Fusils Pour Banter (ShariVari), Thursday, 7 March 2013 10:48 (twelve years ago)

ideally adebayor starts playing and we qualify for cl without any business required in summer, including not negotiating a raise for someone who signed a new deal last year.

Seems like we'll offer bale 150k pw rather than selling him to a club good enough for him

That really seems to go against what we think we know about Levy, unless he's suddenly decide to go all in to level-up the club.

Bring in £50-60m for Bale and recoup his current wages and get rid of Ade and you've got a budget there to bring in three or four top players (for a given value of top).

levy may correctly see that spurs are kinda at a tipping point now that a balesale would thwart

think it was vertonghen saying the other day that standing up to the big boys and extracting maximum value from modric caught a lot of eyes and sparked a few imaginations, it's all smoke and mirrors of perception as the big homie mark hughes would say

if you can get another 2/3 years champions league out of keeping bale and really establish the club in top 4 then it's worth the hit, not like the money's not there for a striker right now as it is

plus as we all know £50m is so easily pissed up the wall and especially so when you'd be looking for immediate replacement and not gradual investment

On matchdays you can see him girding his loins in anticipation of a summer of impassive hardmanning.

Matt DC, Thursday, 7 March 2013 14:07 (twelve years ago)

If Damiao doesn't work out should take a look at Kiessling imo. Might mean Bale might have to start crossing the ball a bit again mind you.

hm i mistakenly thought kiessling was 27 but he's actually 29 so point taken.

if lewandowski arrives bayern will sell gomez i think.

Aubemeyang has been v good whenever i've seen st etienne this season, probably the player who has impressed me the most other than dmitry payet in ligue 1. Then again Aliadiere has looked v good this season in ligue 1 so..

pandemic, Thursday, 7 March 2013 16:38 (twelve years ago)

from what i've seen of him pressing like a nutter i think mandzukic would be fine in a pep side, excellent squad option at very least

By rights Rooney, at 27, should be peaking now and while he's still got 14 in 20 appearances, that's not really what's happening. He doesn't really have the build of a player who's going to last well into his 30s. Chelsea might still go for it.

Fucking hell, Wayne Rooney is 27. I feel old.
