"It's given Andy Cole a chance ... which he's taken with alacrity". APLOMB FFS.

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 19 March 2013 19:48 (twelve years ago)

Yorke was the better player, him pissing the second half of career away is a pocket tragedy.

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 19 March 2013 19:49 (twelve years ago)

a plum, iirc (xp)

Yorke by a country mile

a plom, my bad

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 19 March 2013 19:52 (twelve years ago)

Yorke spent most of his later years mucking about but his second wind as a midfield hard man was enormously gratifying. Can't vote against the guy who led us to our first, and in all probability only, world cup finals.

Tioc Norris (LocalGarda), Tuesday, 19 March 2013 21:41 (twelve years ago)

my main memories of andy cole are his bicycle kick against leicester, and that chip against coventry

don't have any memories of yorke

c'est magnifique, mais ce n'est pas le beurre (imago), Tuesday, 19 March 2013 21:48 (twelve years ago)

His most memorable moment was laying on a goal for Cole, his obvious superior

Number None, Tuesday, 19 March 2013 21:53 (twelve years ago)

actually i do have a memory of yorke - his 90th minute winner against charlton in '99

fuck off

delete (imago), Tuesday, 19 March 2013 21:55 (twelve years ago)

Cole probably had the most consistently great overhead kicks the Premier League has ever seen. People seem to forget the sheer variety of goals he scored, which is why this is such shite

Andrew Cole, now there's a massively overrated goal poacher

sheer variety of goals bounced off non-feet body parts more like

poking pocong (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 19 March 2013 22:07 (twelve years ago)

Yorke's one of my favourite players, but I voted for Cole after watching nbs's highlights reel - variety otm, but it was his celebration with the European Cup that swung it tbh. It's kind of a displeasure that neither of them were on the field when it was actually won.

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 19 March 2013 22:08 (twelve years ago)

also did Yorke ever record a rap single? NAY

delete (imago), Tuesday, 19 March 2013 22:11 (twelve years ago)

He probably would've. But would it have been approved by Jimmy Hill?

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 19 March 2013 22:13 (twelve years ago)

k i'll admit that highlights reel is pretty sick.

still, it's a highlights reel, the fuck-ups aren't there :p

poking pocong (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 19 March 2013 22:15 (twelve years ago)

cole naming his child after devante from jodeci pwns his lol single tbf

very much hope the kid's got something of his old man about him

r|t|c, Tuesday, 19 March 2013 22:58 (twelve years ago)

it really is amazingly difficult to remember anything about yorke's play

r|t|c, Tuesday, 19 March 2013 23:02 (twelve years ago)

collar up, fairly nippy, good technique, good spring, the odd header... none of it concrete, all very vague

r|t|c, Tuesday, 19 March 2013 23:04 (twelve years ago)

They're all just highlights reels in the great reckoning. History will be kind to Gerrard; if Lampard is remembered at all, it'll be for him sitting all self-assured young man in that west ham press conference.

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 19 March 2013 23:07 (twelve years ago)

What would a John Obi Mikel highlights reel look like, I ask myself.

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 19 March 2013 23:08 (twelve years ago)

highlight was Utd getting 12m for him

Number None, Tuesday, 19 March 2013 23:14 (twelve years ago)

I was in the Stretford End for that overhead kick against Leicester - one of the rare moments worth remembering (as the vast majority of the games I went to were forgettable ones against teams like Coventry, Derby, Southampton, Middlesbrough, etc.). I also saw him score up the other end (possibly against Sheffield Wednesday?) and somehow injure himself while celebrating the goal.

kinda want to start a thread about this kind of shit

a friend of my dad's was a league linesman in the late 80s/early 90s, went to so many random lower div games where i barely remember the pies at best...Northampton's old ground on the cricket pitch, Saltergate with a bunch of terraced house attic conversions overlooking the pitch, ancient dude at Wrexham rising from his seat after 80-odd minutes to bellow "CARDIFF SCUM" at the opposition...don't recall much football.

poking pocong (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 20 March 2013 00:18 (twelve years ago)

no I mean a thread about casual snobbery as perpetuated by the spoilt-rotten fans of regular top4 clubs

I really can't understand or even empathise with the psychology of a champs league club fan. it's pretty much my biggest blind-spot when it comes to sport. just don't get it. don't really want to either

delete (imago), Wednesday, 20 March 2013 00:45 (twelve years ago)

i'd say top 4 generally that was just a symptom of worldwide modern football but only with fucking united is it an attitude that's been in generations

r|t|c, Wednesday, 20 March 2013 00:52 (twelve years ago)

guess i don't really associate it with football as such

kinda want to start a thread about this kind of shit

I think you're deliberately missing my point and trying to make out that I'm saying 'oh, how dare these tedious clubs exist'. The most keenly-anticipated matches (for any club) will be the ones against local rivals, ones against clubs at/near the top of the table, and ones near the end of the season if the result is significant in terms of getting closer to winning a cup/ league / promotion / avoiding relegation. I could never get tickets for any of these games, so by definition all I ever saw were the games where there was low demand for tickets, i.e. matches in the middle of the season against mid-table teams with no real rivalry with United. These could be memorable if something memorable happened: a high-scoring victory, a defeat, a last-minute winner, a controversial red card, a spectacular goal. But most of the time nothing like this happened and I can remember literally nothing about the game. I know I've seen United play Middlesbrough - I don't recall any of the players in either team, I'm not sure what the result was (either 0-0 or 1-1, I think), I don't recall anything that happened whatsoever. If somebody made a highlights package of the season, it's very unlikely they would include anything from the vast majority of games I've been to. People will not be reminiscing in 20 years' time saying "Ah...do you remember that scrappy 1-0 win over Wimbledon with a scuffed Jordi Cruyff goal that ultimately meant very little in the big scheme of things?". The Cole overhead kick from the edge of the box was one of those rare moments where something memorable actually happened.

i'll give it to yorke that he's mates with a real sporting genius, unlike anyone who's played for manchester united in the post-cantona era

delete (imago), Wednesday, 20 March 2013 08:41 (twelve years ago)

Eh

scholes

mister borges (darraghmac), Wednesday, 20 March 2013 08:44 (twelve years ago)

thought about scholes, but not a genius. a very, very efficient footballer with excellent technique

delete (imago), Wednesday, 20 March 2013 08:56 (twelve years ago)

You kill your own, and that's what kills me

mister borges (darraghmac), Wednesday, 20 March 2013 09:00 (twelve years ago)

I guess genius is a spectrum not a binary. Scholes had genius to him at times, usually when lining up a volley from outside the box, or perhaps in the way he knitted play together - the alchemy of dominance that Xaviesta seem to specialise in (and, indeed, seem to have improved beyond Scholes' level). Regarding the latter aspect, I'd probably need to watch more football to assert with confidence whether Scholes' possession game is indeed a thing of rare wonder

delete (imago), Wednesday, 20 March 2013 09:05 (twelve years ago)

No i meant scholes is mates with ronnie wallwork

mister borges (darraghmac), Wednesday, 20 March 2013 09:10 (twelve years ago)

Only one possible answer from this Villa fan I'm afraid. And I do rate Andy Cole.

mister borges (darraghmac), Friday, 22 March 2013 21:07 (twelve years ago)

I've got my fair share of blind spots and prejudiced opinions e.g. it's taken me a year to accept that Rafael isn't completely shit.

I am pretty much unable to identify a good solid dependable consistent centre hoff. I blame Celtic.

Habemus opiniones pro vobis (onimo), Friday, 22 March 2013 21:32 (twelve years ago)

I am assuming you refer to utd rb and not chelsea interim

mister borges (darraghmac), Saturday, 23 March 2013 01:14 (twelve years ago)

Aye, I wrote him off way too early.

A little bit of me wants the interim one to do well just to piss a whole range of cunts off. Chelsea have been sporadically good to watch since his arrival - though he learns that the answer to Torres vs Ba in that set-up is "none of the above". I like that Rafa's not prepared to go along with the demi-God bullshit re Fergie.
