Thiago Silva & Brasil '13: The Confederations Cup Thread

Group A: Brazil, Italy, Mexico, Japan

Group B: Spain, Uruguay, Tahiti, Nigeria

Disappointed by Japan in the opener, didn't have their usual pace or stamina. Neymar opened the scoring on a terrific volley; my 6 year old in the Japan shirt was calling for hand ball on Fred but I don't think you'd ever call that back. Brazil had most of the possession and the better chances, Japan's shots were from distance and right at the keeper. Brazil's second goal should've been stopped by Kawashima, who's made too many mistakes in recent months. Uchida did a good job keeping up with Neymar on the wing. Honda tried hard but couldn't beat the pressure, it didn't help that David Luiz kept shoving him without drawing a foul. Endo looked old and tired and couldn't complete any of his longer pass attempts, the team improved when he was replaced. Brazil were clearly the better team, despite the perception that they're not that good these days, which bodes badly for Japan fans like me

Hard to imagine Japan getting enough points from Italy and Mexico to advance, which means this afternoon's game in Rio could decide the non-Brazil team to come out of Group A.

Spain - Uruguay this afternoon should be fun to watch.

You could've had Sergio Ramos & Brasil '13, but maybe save that for next year, we might be able to get even closer

Ismael Klata, Sunday, 16 June 2013 18:02 (eleven years ago)

maybe Jordan Hendes, if England get there

Ismael Klata, Sunday, 16 June 2013 18:21 (eleven years ago)

Jesus!

О боже, какой мужчина (ShariVari), Sunday, 16 June 2013 19:28 (eleven years ago)

Gio looking sharp, as usual.

О боже, какой мужчина (ShariVari), Sunday, 16 June 2013 19:34 (eleven years ago)

Sickly child nets, 1-1. I just switched on, what was the blasphemy for?

Ismael Klata, Sunday, 16 June 2013 19:35 (eleven years ago)

Fabulous Pirlo free kick.

О боже, какой мужчина (ShariVari), Sunday, 16 June 2013 19:36 (eleven years ago)

That's a great goal from Balo, proper centre-forward shit

Third Rate Zoo Keepers With Tenth Rate Minds (Windsor Davies), Sunday, 16 June 2013 20:41 (eleven years ago)

Amazing that someone who has such difficulties putting on a shirt takes it off so many times when he scores tbh

Le Bateau Ivre, Sunday, 16 June 2013 21:27 (eleven years ago)

I can never see that Uruguay-Ghana penalty sequence often enough. Gorgeous.

Ismael Klata, Sunday, 16 June 2013 21:51 (eleven years ago)

ffs I won't be inviting Jonathan Pearce to any party I'm throwing

Ismael Klata, Sunday, 16 June 2013 21:55 (eleven years ago)

I want to put this Uruguayan XI in sharp suits and shoot Godfather III properly.

Ismael Klata, Sunday, 16 June 2013 22:00 (eleven years ago)

Spain looking amazing thus far. They've got a bit of knife-through-ham-sandwich about them in this incarnation.

Ismael Klata, Sunday, 16 June 2013 22:13 (eleven years ago)

feel like Spain ought to get all Corinthian about this and decline to accept any goal resulting from a deflection

Ismael Klata, Sunday, 16 June 2013 22:22 (eleven years ago)

'it's not like tropical rain, it's like a monsoon' - wth does that mean?

Ismael Klata, Sunday, 16 June 2013 22:23 (eleven years ago)

i like how spain's shirts make it look like they're all wearing gold medals

i do not like how lawrenson is allowed to be alive

r|t|c, Sunday, 16 June 2013 22:26 (eleven years ago)

totally predictable, totally lovely

r|t|c, Sunday, 16 June 2013 22:31 (eleven years ago)

should we bin tapping? (darraghmac), Sunday, 16 June 2013 22:34 (eleven years ago)

forearm smashes are a fine addition to the repertoire imo

Ismael Klata, Sunday, 16 June 2013 22:34 (eleven years ago)

Remind me how England beat this?

Ismael Klata, Sunday, 16 June 2013 22:37 (eleven years ago)

"we're actually inundated with ants here in the commentary position"

r|t|c, Sunday, 16 June 2013 22:37 (eleven years ago)

I quite liked that glimpse behind the curtain

Ismael Klata, Sunday, 16 June 2013 22:38 (eleven years ago)

that's twice Lawro's been on about the traffic infrastructure

Ismael Klata, Sunday, 16 June 2013 22:39 (eleven years ago)

i wonder what it's like actually living in uruguay day to day, do you just get elbowed in the face waiting in line at the post office and stuff

r|t|c, Sunday, 16 June 2013 22:39 (eleven years ago)

uncharacteristically poor ball from robert downey jr there

r|t|c, Sunday, 16 June 2013 22:42 (eleven years ago)

srsty you can train english yoof for a thousand years and never get an exchange as casually excellent as that between alba and pedro on the left just then

r|t|c, Sunday, 16 June 2013 22:44 (eleven years ago)

How much do Spain ever gain from the faceclutchy stuff? It's like whenever Robert Plant starts singing about Tolkein.

Ismael Klata, Sunday, 16 June 2013 22:47 (eleven years ago)

I bypassed Uruguay when I was down that part of the world xps and have always regretted it. I expect the border guards would've greeted me with a handshake and a rake down the shins.

Ismael Klata, Sunday, 16 June 2013 22:49 (eleven years ago)

Pffft refs need constant reminding that lesser team are kicking you

should we bin tapping? (darraghmac), Sunday, 16 June 2013 22:53 (eleven years ago)

should we bin tapping? (darraghmac), Sunday, 16 June 2013 23:03 (eleven years ago)

I've no idea why those bastards of Dutch public broadcasting decided to broadcast this tournament live in its entirety. It's not like I haven't better things to do, like word. Or sleep. [/blue saturday]

Le Bateau Ivre, Sunday, 16 June 2013 23:05 (eleven years ago)

Also that Pirlo goal was nice and all but there was an odd touch of the grobelaars abt the goalie.

So: The Answers (or something), Sunday, 16 June 2013 23:06 (eleven years ago)

jesus some of those passes were laser guided

r|t|c, Sunday, 16 June 2013 23:08 (eleven years ago)

How the fuck didn't Soldado get a penalty there wtf

Le Bateau Ivre, Sunday, 16 June 2013 23:51 (eleven years ago)

That passage just there - that was Lawro and Mowbray asking if Germany could cut it on a hot Tuesday night in Fortaleza, wasn't it?

William Bloody Swygart, Sunday, 30 June 2013 23:34 (eleven years ago)

Feel sorry for this Jadson dude, somehow his late arrival leaves a stain of failure

Ismael Klata, Sunday, 30 June 2013 23:35 (eleven years ago)

feel that Lawrenson will struggle to top his 'cocoa as metaphor for sex with Shakira' bit in the remaining fifteen minutes.

Fanois och Alexander (Merdeyeux), Sunday, 30 June 2013 23:36 (eleven years ago)

Neymar's shite.

Fanois och Alexander (Merdeyeux), Sunday, 30 June 2013 23:37 (eleven years ago)

How much grace does this buy Neymar before the 'he's shit' meme resurfaces?

Ismael Klata, Sunday, 30 June 2013 23:55 (eleven years ago)

Thought Shearer was going to plough back in there for a second

Ismael Klata, Sunday, 30 June 2013 23:55 (eleven years ago)

Torres receiving the golden boot: priceless

Le Bateau Ivre, Monday, 1 July 2013 00:11 (eleven years ago)

Torres has become the Chance the Gardener of football hasn't he.

Fanois och Alexander (Merdeyeux), Monday, 1 July 2013 00:12 (eleven years ago)

This is the most elaborate prize ceremony I've ever seen.

Bronze ball for Paulinho now. Lol.

Le Bateau Ivre, Monday, 1 July 2013 00:12 (eleven years ago)

Xp yes he has. He can score some mean goals against Tahiti though

Le Bateau Ivre, Monday, 1 July 2013 00:13 (eleven years ago)

portugal are pretty much the fake brazil anyway, big phil and deco, it's clever brand continuity. i'd quite like owen's wooden face in there to balance it out, or maybe rooney thieving in the car park instead of van nisty. ronan so bang otm about the hell ad tho

― prima fassy (mwah), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 22:54 (9 years ago)

this is the first ilx reference to 'big phil' that isnt constituent of 'big phil collins fan'

Nilmar Honorato da Silva, Monday, 1 July 2013 00:19 (eleven years ago)

rockety communism (imago), Monday, 1 July 2013 00:30 (eleven years ago)

Vickery left school age 16 and worked as a herdsman on his parents' farm. He remains a qualified cattle inseminator.[4]

Vickery has an Oriental tattoo on his left shoulder which roughly translates to "I'll fight you to the death", and a bulldog tattoo on his right.

Nilmar Honorato da Silva, Monday, 1 July 2013 12:47 (eleven years ago)

not sure exactly how one becomes a nonpractising, defrocked, emeritus cattle inseminator

Nilmar Honorato da Silva, Monday, 1 July 2013 12:47 (eleven years ago)

I didn't see the anthems last night. Fuck me, that Brazilian rendition was emotional.

Massive strategic error by the Spanish, going with an instrumental.
