can you think of a single player who has been a ~major success~ in the last decade while being as technically shit as carroll?

what would a Rooney/Carroll thread be without judicious use of the elbow?

As if Arsenal would pay out good money for a player who is technically shit

Tommy McTommy (Tom D.), Thursday, 27 June 2013 11:08 (twelve years ago)

this q kinda pertains to what i was thinking yesterday about d bent @ liverpool, namely the imo deluded kneejerk modern snobbery towards narrowly specialist players correctly utilised

is carroll a better ~player~ than rooney, unquestionably not, does he have the capacity to be a more effective weapon ehh it's definitely up for grabs

£35M KENNY WHAT WERE YOU THINKING

Ismael Klata, Thursday, 27 June 2013 11:16 (twelve years ago)

a player that can do one job well is fine if you've got a team/squad where he slots in, i think Bent at Liverpool was more a question of not slotting, tho you could also question whether Bent still offers value in terms of the limited role you'd want him to perform

for many people a really special folder makes a huge difference (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 27 June 2013 11:18 (twelve years ago)

and like i said yesterday, if Liverpool really wanted a Bent-like player then why not stick with Carroll?

for many people a really special folder makes a huge difference (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 27 June 2013 11:19 (twelve years ago)

bent is a quick lethal finisher with no touch

big ands is a slow battering ram with no touch

rooney is a fat but quickish nothing with no nothing

dj hollingsworth vs dj perry (darraghmac), Thursday, 27 June 2013 11:25 (twelve years ago)

rtc otm tho, the disdain for a 'nothing but goals' player in a coach is to be feared and mistrusted. use your big brain to formulate a system where the other ten players at your disposal get the ball to such a gem imo, or fuck off elsewhere sharpish

dj hollingsworth vs dj perry (darraghmac), Thursday, 27 June 2013 11:26 (twelve years ago)

eh whoa now i mean ideally in the modern squad game you'd not want to build your entire shebang on such a player (you can win the championship with a taarabt vehicle but after that...). but for instance the appeal of bent at liverpool is the versatility or variety to be specialised if u catch my drift. more intriguing imo to have one benty in the mix there than multiple iterations of the same nippy wing forward

r|t|c, Thursday, 27 June 2013 12:07 (twelve years ago)

invite dmac to assess extent of rooney being mismanaged throughout his career

r|t|c, Thursday, 27 June 2013 12:09 (twelve years ago)

well yeah a coach should have ideally more than one system at his disposal

dj hollingsworth vs dj perry (darraghmac), Thursday, 27 June 2013 12:09 (twelve years ago)

'nothing but goals' player

That's Bent whereas Carroll's more of 'not even goals' player

rooney vs arsenal that time for everton and for a bit during euro 2004 and for his utd european debut- well managed wunderkind

the rest of it- golem turned into a kebab vehicle. there was something there once for all to see, but even in his 30 goals seasons he was mainly a joyless tapper of ins, the kind of statistically impressive award winning career that proves that le tiss was 100% correct to stay at southampton

dj hollingsworth vs dj perry (darraghmac), Thursday, 27 June 2013 12:12 (twelve years ago)

the playoff against turkey is my best memory of him. fearless, quick, creative. all gone now. all gone.

i think bent at liverpool would be clever enough, if the price isn't wild. like would you be thinking "oh fuck" if they're bringing him on with 20 mins to go? vs... amc/fw #33/35

Shamrock Shoe (LocalGarda), Thursday, 27 June 2013 12:17 (twelve years ago)

Daren Bent as a "nothing but goals" player is a myth, the idea of a team with money in the bank and designs on european football wanting to spend proper dollar on the guy is bonkers. If he went for £6 mil or less I spose id get that.

Rooney obvs. approximately 15x better than Carroll will ever be, but his general demeanour, combined with the knowledge of what might have been, makes him correspondingly more depressing and hateful.

I maintain that Rooney could have easily lived up to the hype had he not fallen in love with the way that Scholes plays.

Voting for Carroll because of Ronan's avatar. It's the only right thing to do tbh.

Rooney is a good athlete. He played very well in the Arsenal. This summer, there are a lot of clubs want to sign him.

Thread needs Grant Holt for true challopian nirvana.

In his Charlton days Bent was really good at creating space for himself but by the time he'd turned up at Spurs most Premiership defenders had worked out what he was going to do and he wasn't an intelligent enough player to get around that. By the end of his time at WHL it was frustratingly obvious what he was going to do at all times, especially when he didn't have the ball (ie 99% of the time). Since then he's had one good season at Sunderland and several mediocre ones and idiot managers/chairmen still think he'll be the goose that laid the golden boot.

Still rate him about Carroll mind. Position of Rickie Lambert in these rankings to be assessed at a later date.
