Giles cannot stand to hear the Portuguese lad being described as "great" because it lowers standards and because it diminishes those who truly were great. And it's not just a matter of semantics: it's a matter of longevity and achievement. "I love great players," he said, "I've a great respect for the Peles and the Maradonas, the Beckenbauers, the Bobby Moores, the Bryan Robsons, the Roy Keanes of this world. And they had to put in an awful lot of hard work and achieve an awful lot before they were considered great players."

O'Leary on the road to `legendary status'
IAN PARKES – 24 December 1999
LEEDS UNITED chairman Peter Ridsdale firmly believes David O'Leary will become a managerial legend who will stand alongside giants such as Bill Shankly, Don Revie and Sir Alex Ferguson. [....]
``I think history will end up with him going down as one of that handful of truly great managers over the years like Revie, Shankly and Ferguson,'' lauded Ridsdale.
``He is a natural leader.
``I am one of those people who believes that leaders are born and not made.
``They have it naturally and it is instinctive of course you can fine-tune it and I believe that David O'Leary has all the attributes of a born leader.''
``Some people, those I would call the Brian Cloughs of this world, have a single style and his was a fear factor which worked only with some players.
``But I think in today's game you need to know who and when to kick and who and when to stroke.

However, the Liverpool midfielder has not featured in the national side since November 2010 and Pearce threw in an unexpected name as he assessed what qualities he will be looking for when his squad assembled in Watford on Sunday evening.
'Just over a year ago I was asked to give a talk about leadership to the troops in Afghanistan,'' he said.
''On the trip over there I thought 'How do I approach this? What key element do I believe would be fundamental in a leader?'
''The one word I could come up with was unselfish. Your team-mates have to know you're in this for their greater good, rather than your own.
''I will attempt to pick a captain who I believe has that sort of respect in the other players' eyes - someone for whom the team mattered a hell of a lot.
''I see that in the James Milners of this world - they are team players. That's the one fundamental that all leaders have.''

Despite Wales’ losing the match 1-0, Ed later gave an emotional speech to the assembled players in which he repeated his father’s mantra that as long as they gave their best, which they had, that was enough.
And Hartson said it was that maturity and leadership that had made Speed so popular, and was now reflected in his sons.
“I think it was really fitting, the tribute that everybody paid and everybody came out – including the Alan Shearers of this world, Mark Hughes and a lot of ex-managers of Gary."

Gold confirmed the policies already outlined by co-owner David Sullivan that Blues would not be encouraging big-name, high-earning players to come to the club.
"We need players who can not only cope with the rigours of a 46-game season, but who can also raise their game even at places like Colchester and Southend. That is vital if we are to be promoted.
"No, we won't be having the Mario Melchiots or the Chris Suttons of this world at Blues.
"There will be gaps of course and I expect us to fill them before the start of the season."

Warnock said: “Austin has got a good engine, is good in the air and can play centre-half as well as midfield. He can also play full-back so having him around will be great. But I also have to say that he can be at his best when breaking attacks up.
“He reminds me of (Claude) Makelele at Chelsea, he is that type of player. A Shaun Derry type, if you like, always snapping at the opposition.
“When QPR went up, (Adel) Taarabt and (Alejandro) Faurlin were great but we could not have done it without the Shaun Derrys of this world and the Clint Hills and the Paddy Kennys.
“You have to have them in place to get where you want to be."

Steve Bruce tells journalists that he is “quite surprised" that his club sits on top of the Premier League, and warned fans not to expect the title challenge to last, despite being 10 points clear of Chelsea. He also confirms that the club will not be spending much in January to remain on top, and that his targets remain the same as ever: “Yes, I think we’ll still be looking at the usual players: the Asamoah Gyans and the Lee Cattermoles of this world."

Good point, Dempsey'srevenge. From being kids, the players are told to get suck in and show "commitment". Managers do nothing when their players harrang and insult officials. Cloughie used to fine his players for back-chatting the ref. Those days are gone. Now it's cool to be aggressive both in and out of football.
The result is the Joey Bartons of this world. And his brother, of course.

While McDermott is keen to retain his best talents, it remains to be seen if the club will be able to do so.
[...]
He added: “Your ideal scenario is always to keep everybody and add. But obviously, you have to do what you have got to do.
“But I have been in this situation before. I have sold big players before, such as Shane Long, Matt Mills and Gylfi Sigurdsson’s of this world and built again.
“I want to keep players. But if there’s a surplus of players in one position, you have to look at that.”
(I'm pretty sure McDermott didn't sell Gylfi Sigurdsson)

Bowditch, just 18, comes with a glowing recommendation from John McGreal, who played with him at Ipswich, and Cotterill was thrilled to convince the youngster to move north for a month: "I spoke to Joe Royle about it, I spoke to Dean, and he fancied it.
"He's obviously not had a lot to do at Ipswich this season, but he's a young lad and can come in and play wide or as a striker.
"Hopefully he will show the fans youthful exuberance, he's got good pace, good feet, and he will be with the England Under 19s the week after next.
"He's a very nice young man and a good footballer.
"I checked him out with John McGreal, and he said some nice things about him, and I like a good, young player unfortunately we haven't got too many coming through.
"And to buy them, they cost you a lot of money.
"I'd have a team full of them if I had the opportunity, play them alongside the John McGreals and Frank Sinclairs of this world, you wouldn't be doing too bad then.

So can we read into that a move for Tom Heaton? Not likely – he is out of Dale’s price range.
“Tom Heaton would be far too expensive for us,” admitted Hill. “We were given a great opportunity to bring him in and put him in the shop window, and we probably had him a little bit longer than we expected. We’d be chasing waterfalls trying to get the Tom Heatons of this world because we cannot afford him. He is a Championship goalkeeper elect.”

Stuart Pearce begins the build-up to next year's European Championships in Germany tonight, insistent that his Under-21 squad is producing a solid conveyor belt of talent for Fabio Capello.
'I don't have any doubts about the talent of the ones who have done up. When I look at the Gibbs and Wilsheres of this world, I think: "Will they hold their own if they get the opportunity?" The answer is that they definitely will.'

Keith Downing, Hodgson's assistant has strongly defended his mentor’s ability, scotching suggestions that he cannot handle senior players and painting a picture of man who will educate those working under him.
He is convinced Hodgson's England will be well-drilled and well-prepared for the battles that lie ahead.
'I can assure everyone that everything Roy does will be diligently thought out,' he said. 'He approaches his work with huge enthusiasm. At the age of 64 it's great to see. He's out there every day, ball under his arm.
'Every detail is covered. His players are always learning. I think I read a quote from Steven Reid - and he’s 30-odd - in which he says he’s still picking up bits and pieces from the knowledge of the man.
'I think senior England players will learn. Every day he has a structure and purpose to his sessions.
'He does play 11 v 11 in training. But every day is not like that. There’s different formats to him. But if you are a defender you will defend, everything is position specific in what he does, So everybody is getting something everyday in their position; they’re not just being a five-a-side player, they're being a defender.
'And that's why the Brede Hangelands and Jonas Olssons of this world have improved, they’ve done that day in and day out. It works.

The Phil McNultys of this world really start to piss me off (http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/philmcnulty/2009/10/arsenal_teach_spurs_silence_is.html)
yes - arsenal have better strength in depth in their attacking players.
But- there's one big point that has to be made. Although arsenal, too, had key players missing we cant blame that. However, i do firmly believe that when we play arsenal at the lane, with all our key players fit, you wouldnt see this gulf between the two sides. On our day we can match arsenal in every way, take a few important players out of both arsenal and spurs - then you see the difference - arsenal are stronger.

Yeah, Google started thinking I was a robot earlier. Then five minutes later, it thought it again.
Also, if I had compiled a list of football managers likely to drop TLC references in their press briefings, Keith Hill wouldn't have been on it.

Just a couple of weeks ago the match was shaping up to be a winner-takes-all contest for sixth place – but far from dwelling on the disappointment of missing out on a shot at promotion, Hill is focusing on maximising the club’s push for success in 2011/12.
“We’ll have to show patience once we have put our markers down on the players we want because we cannot rush them into making a decision; they will have other offers to consider. But at least we’ll not be chasing waterfalls like last year.

Hill achieves Dale’s improvements without huge financial investment, selling talent such as Adam Le Fondre (to Rotherham) and Will Buckley (to Watford) to balance the books, bringing through players from the youth system and making judicious use of the loan market.
He takes the job seriously, but his sense of humour is never that far from the surface. Twice when I interview him for the Rochdale Observer towards the end of the year, he manages to slip song lyrics into the conversation: first Orange Juice, then TLC.
“I don’t want to rip it up and start again,” he says when I ask him about mid-season squad rebuilding plans around November. I put the question to him again just before Christmas. “We mustn’t go chasing players we can’t afford, Mike,” he says. “We can’t go chasing waterfalls.”

Left virtually toothless by the Bosman ruling, clubs have scant artillery to fight the van Hooijdonks of this world, even when they are tied to lengthy contracts. The European Commission has decreed that footballers, like other professionals, should be free to leave a job when they choose.

To qualify for air-miles any time soon, Spurs need to be signing stars, especially in midfield. Players such as Jermain Defoe and Ledley King are consistently superior to the opposition, and we now need someone who will beat their man every time, be it against Palace or Chelsea. Wheeling and dealing around the £3 million mark is a vital skill, but it classifies a club, limiting it to the status of Portsmouth, Charlton and Bolton. The Andy Reids and the Wayne Routledges of this world are not in the same class as Shaun Wright-Phillips.

"Knowing Steve as I do, it would have been hard for him to take not to be in the side and I would expect that," said Taylor. "I would be most surprised and upset if he hadn't found it disappointing and the Steve Stauntons of this world are what professional footballers should be about."

Facing fierce Premiership clashes with Liverpool, Chelsea and Arsenal and a crunch Champions League encounter with AC Milan over the next month, O’Leary said: “I want players in here. I could buy a load of players for this club only to find they are the biggest waste of time out.
“One thing I am not going to do, and I’ll take the stick for it, is panic and buy players for the sake of it and to discover six months down the line that they are no good for Leeds, just to appease a certain group of people.
“No way. I am going to stick to a policy here that the people who come in at Leeds are the right people. It’s all very well saying that you need players. Believe me, it is hard getting them.
“I know certain players I want, but you try getting those certain players.
“I hold my hands up. We needed players in here before we got all these injuries, but we need the good players like the Eirik Bakkes of this world, not people who are here for a last swansong.
“That’s not the way David O’Leary runs this club. Now if other clubs want to do it that way, fine. It won’t be happening at Leeds under my care. It might if I’m not here, but not under my management."

They never got on the players backs when they were one down. At no point did they and they gave us a real lift. It’s a fantastic start and I have to say that Neil Redfearn and Richard Naylor were great. I wouldn’t to have come to any football club with five games to do but this club. “England turned up at a major tournament without six or seven – I think there were eight players with senior caps – who could have played ,” Pearce said.
“The odd one was injury, but apathy played a big part – the Oxlade-Chamberlains of this world, the Phil Joneses, because they didn’t want to come. Once they go through the ivory towers of the seniors they don’t want to play with the U21s.
