instances where big reputation club spends lots of money on player from other big reputation club tend not to elicit the whoa tbh

tev/masch and ravanelli are the only ones where i was genuinely agog i think

aguero is top 10 maybe top 5 really

Yeah there must be a few coups smaller clubs have pulled off that I'm forgetting - maybe at Portsmouth? But usually they tend to slightly unfairly lack woah! due to over-the-hill (Lombardo), perceived-washed-up (van der Sar) or nobody-knows-much-about-him (Saha, or take your pick).

Osvaldo, duh

Ismael Klata, Friday, 13 September 2013 21:08 (eleven years ago)

Spurs were terrible when Klinsmann signed for them. I was absolutely astonished when he joined and am still not entirely sure why he did.

if we're going pre-EPL then I'm afraid there's only one contender

1979–1982 Barcelona 98 (31)
1982–1983 Charlton Athletic 16 (9)

"Obviously we have played for some of the great clubs in Europe but this is the pinnacle of our careers," Yuran said through an interpreter. "We have always wanted to play in England and didn't want to miss the opportunity."

Millwall, who have slipped to 11th having led the division earlier in the season, will hope the signings, which mean they now have five foreign players, prove a turning point. "Their presence in the squad is bound to give supporters, players and everyone a lift," Mick McCarthy, the Millwall manager, said. The pair will be available for the visit of Port Vale a week today.

Peter Mead, the club's chairman, said talks with Spartak had been long- winded. "Dealing with the Russians was not easy and I can understand now why it took so long to secure international arms deals," he said.

The influx of leading foreign internationals like Klinsmann and Dumitrescu, Bryan Roy and Stefan Schwarz, is down to money, Gordon Taylor believes. 'The Premier League did what it said it was going to do; it concentrated money in the elite,' the chief executive of the Professional Footballers' Association, said yesterday.

Taylor made a final point, that the invasion will foster better football here. 'If we have the likes of Ardiles, Dumitrescu, and Klinsmann in our league, the emphasis will be less on crash, bang, wallop and more on the passing style,' Taylor said. 'This will help England and Terry Venables.'

The change has not gone unnoticed in the City. Newcastle United are poised for a floatation that would value the club at pounds 160m, second only to Manchester United at pounds 268m. Tottenham Hotspur are valued at just under pounds 100m and Chelsea pounds 60m. Leeds United have just been bought for pounds 20m by a media group and could follow Newcastle on to the Stock Exchange with a pounds 16.5m valuation. Blood was spilled at the Premiership newcomers Leicester City, whose chairman had to step aside in favour of a consortium of hard-nosed businessmen with money to burn.

The new prosperity means that Ravanelli - said by his manager, Bryan Robson, to be "one of the best strikers in the world" - can be given a four-year deal worth pounds 1.3m a year.

Klinsmann was particularly woah! for an EPL club at that time

Old Boy In Network (Michael B), Friday, 13 September 2013 23:10 (eleven years ago)

xps perhaps in some way Yuran & Kulkov to Millwall was an international arms deal
