Because this might be the last time anyone thinks it worth previewing a game by reference to the days before football began.

Ossie would probably be my favourite out of these but Liverpool had a great season that year and Molby and Grobbelaar seemed like a huge part of that, so maybe Brucey if you want to restrict it to 86-87?

Actually Liverpool didn't really have a great season by their standards at the time and what with Everton winning the league and all.

These guys nearly all had something memorable about them. Maybe it was just the scarcity but Zondervan, Nwajiobi and Valentine are the only ones I have zero recollection of.

Bruce was my actual favourite at the time, though I always thought Craig Johnston was really cool; I remember him trying to pinch one of (I think) Ian Rush's goals in the cup final, sliding in and just failing to nick the ball as it crossed the line.

But I went with Mitch d'Averey - my panini album reeled from the sheer exoticism of a name starting d'

ah Zondervan was the neighbour of a high school friend (pretty posh brand new neighbourhood)

Ossie's a massive outlier here, all the others are practically brits or are from about a hundred miles away

Went for Ossie (though obv my actual favourite at the time was Jesper Olsen).

Random memory circa 1986: the fire alarm went off at school and more than a thousand teenagers had to line up in the playground. For the whole time we were out there one guy from my class kept singing 'Romeo - Romeo, Romeo Zondervan' over and over (to the tune of the chorus of 'Waterloo').
