Mayo haven't been on dis ting since 1951: ILF welcomes all comers to Cluiche Cheannais na hÉireann 2013

Perennial sleeping giants and serial losing finalists Mayo take on Dublin tomorrow, 3.30pm. Beg, borrow or steal a stream, marvel at the brawn and desire of the amateurs on the park, ask yr friendly GAA posters what the hell it takes for a foul to be called, why hands are allowed and how knowing when to take yr point is a key cornerstone of malevolent irish rural psyche.

Enjoy the match. Boo the Dubs. Mayo, god help us.

Without

The fields in both counties are too small for hurling to ever have been developed as they art form it is in the dairy counties, is my theory.

But the ditches of boggy mayo, rocky kerry, the yards between the towers of ballymun, the border gaps of armagh, these are the spaces that light struggles into, that murder and dark deeds are swallowed whole by, that breed yr modern hack-of-all-trades gaa footballer

― Old Boy In Network (Michael B), Saturday, 21 September 2013 16:09 (thirteen years ago)

Just webmailed you about this DMac.

My heart and family loyalties say Mayo, my head says Dublin.

Anyone going? Tickets like hens teeth.

Tickets arent a fuckin hope. Brother got 1 through contacts, they're trickling down but the system of allocating them out through clubs and organisations around the country means its not a market as such, its a game of who you know. He's not mad into it but feels it'd be bad form to sell.

I'll be watchin at home then joinin achill cru up around croker when we win.

The mayo player everyone is raving about is the redeveloped aidan o'shea, always a fielder of note but physically reconditioned over the summer to a cross between longcat and a sherman tank. His fetching of the high ball above a forest of thuggery is rivalled as a sight this year only by his can't-fail method of seeking out opposition defenders to run over on his maraudings.

O'Connor starts tomorrow with a dislocated shoulder not fully healed. Seven minutes max.

Mayo were brilliant and the tactics seemed spot on. There's defo a yellow streak in this Kerry team tho, and that's not to take away from Mayo just was clear they couldn't deal with being physically challenged and it's not the first time. Not a dynasty team.

i think there's something in this. by the end some of them were looking to the cliffords instead of taking their own chances on.

that said, they had the vice on at the end and should prob have put a few of those chances away

could say the same about us tho

― Wichita Referee's Assistant (darraghmac), Sunday, 26 July 2026 20:55 (three months ago)

yeah there wasn't a hint of swagger about them. they've won an all-ireland or two but they can be got at for sure.

and yeah it was weird in a way as mayo did throw away a lot of chances. even accepting that a team isn't going to score thirty points or whatever, they left a fair bit out there and perhaps could have won by more.

it was quite compelling watching the kerry backs just completely melt under the pressure - they were all over the place in possession. also weird that kerry did the same kickout about 10 times, losing most of them.
