the Shearer of simulated snowsex etc. (Dwight Yorke), Tuesday, 29 October 2013 13:23 (eleven years ago)

you mean like Baines or like dudes with cult appeal?

increasingly desperate demand for high (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 29 October 2013 13:26 (eleven years ago)

If it's Baineses, I do kind of love those guys. I dunno why exactly, maybe because football is somehow an environment where they still seem like the anorak-wearing kids with Smiths lyrics scrawled over their tactics jotters.

On the other hand, nothing disappointed me more than discovering Del Piero is besotted with Noel Gallagher.

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 29 October 2013 13:39 (eleven years ago)

Baines is what's wrong with Britain.

italian anglophilia is the lurid drag version of bainesery basically

Thread inspired mainly by my dad's late-mid-00s fixation on Man City's Stephen Jordan as someone who "must be well into his indie" based primarily on his haircut:

http://www.sporting-heroes.net/content/thumbnails/00159/15779-zoom.jpg

take the thread any direction you want but avoid Pat Nevin. Use it as a space to discuss 'hipster footballers' if you like.

john scales introduced chris evans to reef's 'place your hands' by sending a copy of the 7" single to him by courier with a post-it exclaiming 'everything changes here'

Roberto Spiralli, Tuesday, 29 October 2013 14:09 (eleven years ago)

The inset in that photo is the weirdest thing. It's like a Wedding Present version of that Pink Floyd sleeve.

I started it and then it annoyed me in Q1 so I closed the tab.

Legitimate space tale (LocalGarda), Tuesday, 29 October 2013 14:37 (eleven years ago)

My dad is also well into LB as we share a surname.

Anyone else into the player quiz/profiles in matchday programmes? Most FL teams have at least one player, usually a full back, who gets "a lot of stick from the lads" about his dressing room choices. "None of that R'n'B rubbish most of the boys are into, I try and put on some proper music, Kasabian really get me ready"

the Shearer of simulated snowsex etc. (Dwight Yorke), Tuesday, 29 October 2013 14:41 (eleven years ago)

that line has been around for quite a while, like for stoic yeoman of the guard white british footballers. even in the 90s when footballers liked phil collins they'd be all racially iffy about whoever "tried to get me into the rap music"...

Legitimate space tale (LocalGarda), Tuesday, 29 October 2013 14:44 (eleven years ago)

was Le Saux a fucking indie? i don't remember but let's be honest

Pat Nevin

grown-arsed man (onimo), Tuesday, 29 October 2013 14:57 (eleven years ago)

as for clubs, Man City do wheel out the Joy Division, Oasis, ACR, etc as halftime music, but they're clearly a 'bought out by Sony' type of indie

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 29 October 2013 14:57 (eleven years ago)

xp horrified to find that Shearer was my answer for that

there's an interview with robbie keane where he says, in his hilarious voice: "i love the irish music meself, mary black and the like."

like, wtf, mary black is something your granny likes.

Pat Nevin's DJing at http://www.howdoesitfeel.co.uk/ this weekend, working hard to win this thread.

Merdeyeux, Tuesday, 29 October 2013 15:27 (eleven years ago)

I've been to one of Pat Nevin's DJing gigs. He's pretty much Captain Obvious, playing Smells Like Teen Spirit, Common People, etc.

as for clubs, Man City do wheel out the Joy Division, Oasis, ACR, etc as halftime music, but they're clearly a 'bought out by Sony' type of indie

I've heard Mogwai played at Celtic Park a few times, makes an immensely welcome break from the fucking Fratellis.

xxp if a compulsive highlight > right click > src in google tendency can count as knowledge then yes, bow down 2 the king of comedy

r|t|c, Tuesday, 29 October 2013 15:51 (eleven years ago)

idk about anyone else but whenever mogwai are mentioned literally the only bit of their entire recorded output that immediately springs to mind is banernernerNERRRRR from 'like herod'

therefore that is what i imagined being played at celtic park just then, thanks for reading

Do they still play pre-match bombastic classical music at the Stadium of Light or has that fallen by the wayside?

Matt DC, Tuesday, 29 October 2013 16:29 (eleven years ago)

(though evidently Mendieta's just overtaken him)

"On the plane on the way to the World Cup Carlitos made me listen to their first two albums. I have to say I wasn't expecting much but it is some of the best material I have ever heard. They are absolutely amazing. Their songs are incredible. I would have to say 'Supersonic' and 'Live Forever' are my favourites. I have been listening to their stuff on my iPod dock in the hotel room, on the way to the matches and in the dressing room. I can't believe it's taken me all this time to finally listen to them."

grown-arsed man (onimo), Wednesday, 30 October 2013 15:34 (eleven years ago)

In May 2002 and October 2003, he released two successful mixtapes, featuring his favourite bands. The compilation's title "Mehmet Scholl kompiliert – Vor dem Spiel ist nach dem Spiel" is a reference to Sepp Herberger's famous expression "nach dem Spiel ist vor dem Spiel" ("after the game is before the game"). In an interview, Scholl said he chose this title because he listens to this music before the game, after the game, in the car on the way to the stadium, and in the car when leaving the stadium. The first volume includes songs by The Beta Band, Sportfreunde Stiller, Jimmy Eat World, and The Notwist (complete tracklist) among others. The second volume includes songs by Oasis, Wir sind Helden, and The Flaming Lips (complete tracklist) to name a few. Once a month, he co-presents the feature Mehmets Schollplatten[11] in the program Nachtmix of the Bayern 2 radio station, which is the culturally oriented channel of the federal public broadcaster Bayerischer Rundfunk.

also Rooney's a Merzbow fan apparently

Worst Taste in Music: Rooney put on this song before a game at the Euros which wasn't music, just noise. There was no singing and it was just weird.

tell it to my arse (jim in glasgow), Thursday, 31 October 2013 16:07 (eleven years ago)

Which bands you like the most?

I like REM, Coldplay and The Killers. There's also a song by Chris Brown that is called "No Air" that I've liked since my time at Manchester.

Number None, Thursday, 31 October 2013 16:22 (eleven years ago)
