Worst despotic overlord of the nu-EPL era

Wow there are a lot of these now. Which of this collection of tyrants, criminals, financial incompetents and disproportionately patronised Asians is the worst human being?

(Using the arrival of Abramovich as the dawn of this era, which leaves out pre-Roman despots like Levy and Kuddly Ken Bates, and I've left out reasonably sane and competent new owners like John Henry because no one will vote for them)

Probably shouldn't have put the Icelandic biscuit magnate in there but he does have the appropriate mix of overpromise and underdelivery.

Matt DC, Friday, 7 March 2014 14:49 (eleven years ago)

my assumption remains that Abramovich has had the most people killed so

also people ruining half these clubs are doing God's work so

I dunno, Thaksin might give him a run for his money there, and Sheikh Mansour has the edge on modern slavery.

Much as it pains me to not vote for Hicks/Gillett, they did accompany the club to a European final and pretty close to a league win. So probably Venky's, if only because the Portsmouth goons are so faceless. Pity poor old Balram Chenrai, always the patsy. Then again, Venky's brought us so much pleasure.

Ah sod it, it's Hicks/Gillett, of course it is.

Ismael Klata, Friday, 7 March 2014 15:01 (eleven years ago)

exactly, Venky's do not deserve any worst vote on the strength of that chicken advert alone.

Nooye's Vagge (Noodle Vague), Friday, 7 March 2014 15:02 (eleven years ago)

Roman is more of a straight gangster but I reckon the Gaydamaks would be in with a shout. Despots vs illegal arms dealers vs capitalists with hit-squads is a near-impossible choice but went for Roman for net negative contribution to humanity.

Yuri Bashment (ShariVari), Friday, 7 March 2014 15:03 (eleven years ago)

Are Venky's really worse than anyone else here other than in a lol-Indian-chicken-dudes way?

Matt DC, Friday, 7 March 2014 15:03 (eleven years ago)

Venky's have added hugely to the stock of harmless public pleasure imo

Nooye's Vagge (Noodle Vague), Friday, 7 March 2014 15:04 (eleven years ago)

Yeung's facing a six year stretch but Abramovich would probably be facing a whole life term if we knew how he'd made his billions

Sorry, I missed that 'worst human being' was the criterion. Venky's obviously aren't evil, just pleasingly mental. It's got to be Abramovich - making Chelsea successful probably clinches it alone - though in fairness I've never been sure what Shinawatra's actually supposed to have done.

By coincidence I was on a training course today with a case study about a corrupt Russian magnate named something like Mr Brezinsky. The instructor called him Mr Abramovich throughout, which was seemingly neither a joke nor making a point, just a mere repeated slip of the tongue.

Should have said that if Usmanov ever manages to up his stake in Arsenal, he's going to be tough to beat.

the lack of outward malice (or anything, really) is precisely the chilling evil

Reminds me a little of that beautiful set of colour-restored 19th century Russian Empire photos

It's this weird benevolent look in his eyes, like he's lovingly marching you in the direction of the outhouse in the woods to meet the firing squad.

I'm not saying this is his most heinous crime against humanity but...

The thing is that that non-routine's got him halfway to being some grotesque national treasure, like the shrunken head Great Uncle Arthur brought back from his days in Tanganyika

Ismael Klata, Sunday, 9 March 2014 12:46 (eleven years ago)

It's still pretty amazing that, having made it clear he didn't want his photo published, almost nobody in Russia knew what he looked like until he was made governor of Chukota in 1999. The press was so scared of him they used to publish group photos in which he appeared with a question mark over his face or his features blurred out. This was still happening four years after he took ownership of Sibneft, one of Russia's biggest companies.
