I am committed to never hearing them but I assume they sound like Tegan and Sara mixed with Ariel Pink.

I haven’t listened to them in a while but iirc they sound like an electric can opener that learned to rap while a drunk lady next door does vocal warmups

I actually saw them once… maybe opening for Sufjan Stevens? Anyway I watched a little bit, quickly decided it was lame/rubbish and retreated to the bar for the duration.

But turns out the friend I was with was actually intrigued by the bit we saw and was a bit cranky with me for being so judgemental and/or prescriptive.

So she went and saw their club show the following night.

We are still friends, although I have not recently enquired as to her feelings re Cocorosie.

Other. I heard them once and had to give my ears back. They sounded like a massacre in a mouse circus.

I would prefer not to. (Chinaski), Tuesday, 10 December 2024 15:37 (nine months ago)

I really liked the first album, but also that was 20 years ago

Haha I think the only adequate approach to take here is that of Cocorosie's psychologist, who would say that while it's not prohibited for white singers to say "n-----," it is (shall we say) "very very interesting" that one would choose to put it in the song, then have to sing it to groups of people every third night for the next few years, then trade your drum loops for beatboxing from your black backing band (haha then get quoted in infamous "Kill Whitey" article), all leading up to a general chin-scratching steeple-fingered "very interesting, Cocorosie, you are very interested in black people."

lol it was funny cos I read that last week while looking up old articles about CocoRosie in response to the thread revive, and found that article but didn't notice who wrote it, then found Nabisco saying the exact same thing in the threads and then I saw the byline

Their paternal grandmother's family were Confederates bankers and land-owners in the Deep South. Owned enslaved people, helped genocide the Cherokee. I'm uncertain of the exact number of slaves their family owned, but one may reasonably assume a delegate to the Confederate Congress would own a substantial number.

Here's one deed from their ancestor's papers collection at the East Texas Digital Archives:
https://digital.sfasu.edu/digital/collection/EastTexRC/id/10106/

"Bill of sale to Bennett Blake from John K. Dorsett for a 22 year old slave named Cato for $900."

Here's another deed documented by the Lone Star Slavery Project:

"A negro woman, Beck, about 63 years old: $200.00. A negro man, Tom, about 45 years old: $850.00. A negro boy, George, about 14 years old: $600.00."

have to admire your commitment to your project here, have you been researching this for a long time or just this last week?

Fact-checking doesn't take long. I'm interested in self-serving white people myths. So if someone like, say, King Princess is going to say she didn't "inherit" money, it doesn't take long to fact-check that her ancestors are the slave-owning Confederate family that owned Macy's. You can also conclude that she doesn't need to inherit money, because that requires a person to be dead; writing a check suffices. I think we should question white people more, push back on what they say more often. Grimes says she was homeless living in a crack den. Her dad was a banker in biotech and her mom was a famous Crown prosecutor well known in Canadian media. Ed Sheeran's "Homeless"? He couch surfed. He's a prep school kid whose parents were wealthy curators at prestigious artistic institutions.

I want to hear your take on Seasick Steve

bad love's all you'll get from me (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Wednesday, 11 December 2024 16:27 (nine months ago)

Morally good? No. Musically good? Sometimes.

BigHouses, Wednesday, 11 December 2024 17:07 (nine months ago)

Seasick Steve and CocoRosie seem to like the idea of The Hobo, which does not necessarily have anything to do with actual homeless people. See also: the idea of the Gypsy, as opposed to actual Romani lives. In practice, most people who are able to travel frequently have money.

Hmm. For some reason I am reminded of the Four Sights of the Buddha, where he wanders out from his palace and encounters all the varieties of human suffering for the first time.
