Okay so our two and a half year old just kicked his naps. We were in denial for a few days but it's becoming pretty obvious the kid is not ever going to nap at home again. This would be alright if he would observe "quiet time" but the concept is completely foreign to him. Suffice it to say my wife is at her wit's end. What to do?
We still have him in a crib because he's never acted like he wanted to climb out of it but I'm wondering if getting him a toddler bed will help now (obviously he needs one at some point); if he has somewhere to sleep that he can get into more easily, maybe he will play there and fall asleep. He's only just started kind of playing with toys on his own so I can dream.

I sympathise -- think we might be getting to the nap-dropping point too. Yesterday Howie spent an hour in his cot shouting "Red car! Blue car! Red car! Blue car!" before finally conking out.

My sister in law told me that once all of her kids turned one, they were too old for naps and didn't need one anymore. This sounds kind of crazy to me, since Megan can get really difficult and cranky if she doesn't get a nap during the day and she'll be 18 months next month.

Ophelia does the shout fest most nights. She recently dropped the naps as well. She's 3.

Alice (2yrs 1m) has not napped at home for months, butif we go for a walk at 'nap time' will almost instantly go to sleep in her buggy. However this is NOT the point of naptime which is clearly for the parent to clean the house/have a cup of tea/sleep/read a book without cardboard pages. Grr.
As to the original q: does he still have a buggy/pushchair? Could try rocking him back and forth to sleep in that (the nursery manage to do this with Alice though we have never made it work). Otherwise toddler bed sounds like a plan...

Ava packed in the naps around 2, Lulu a little earlier than that. Lulu still does flake out mid-afternoon (or even late morning) in the buggy or in the car, but if she's at home, she's raring to go all day.

I took daily naps until I was at least eight.

Sometimes I drop off while Alice is watching Something Special/Kipper (she scorns all other programmes at the moment) only to be rudely awakened by an indignant brick/book/cup/knee/elbow/fishing rod in the face.

wow there were answers to this. well, we did get a toddler bed, but that didn't necessarily help matters very much. part of the problem might well have been that he was getting sick, he's since come down with one of the worst colds he's ever had. he's not the sort of kid who likes to take it easy or rest when he's not feeling well either. but, he has napped a few times since (and the fear about the bed being a difficult transition was unfounded, he loves it). but I do suspect that naptime is going to be a struggle from here on out and he'll give it up in the next few months entirely.
he's much too big to rock to sleep, btw. he never liked that anyway, too independent.
