Hey, this may have been covered elsewhere, but: have any of you new moms had to deal with a radically altered diet in the weeks after pregnancy? We had noticed extreme gassiness/fussiness after mom consumed certain foods -- mainly dairy-based stuff. So she is trying to eliminate dairy, and we THINK it has had a positive effect so far, though it is kind of impossible to tell. Has anyone done this? How long did you do it for? The wife is not terribly excited about being dairy-free forever. She loves cheese!

We tried something like that with #1---I think it was dairy also---but it ended up not making any significant difference. We probably held out for 3 weeks, which seems like an eternity that early in parenthood.

yeah, it's just frustrating that there's no definitive way to know what exactly the baby is reacting poorly to. dairy is the one that people seem to reference most, and our pediatrician suggested eliminating it. Wife has also been keeping a "food diary" just to keep track. Well, we'll try the no dairy thing til she can't take anymore!

which might be literally 24 hours from now.
I had to go dairy- and egg-free for three weeks when Howie was fully breastfed to see if it affected his eczema (it made no difference, though later on he turned out to have milk intolerance -- now outgrown -- and an egg allergy).
So I appreciate what a pain it is! We were told to do it for three weeks minimum to see if it made a difference -- and make sure you are eliminating stuff like whey, too.

Yeah, Sylvie was having something that was akin to eczema (or maybe just baby acne), and since we've gotten rid of dairy, her skin seems to have cleared up. But we're not sure about the fussiness/gassiness. I guess all babies have moments of fussiness/gassiness regardless of what the mother's diet is ...

We read, and later experientially confirmed, gassiness in the baby after mom ate broccoli.

Yeah I think anything potentially gassy gets inherited by the little one i.e. cabbage etc
For the first three months or so the lovely Emma B gave up dairy had just one cup of coffee a day. Then she gradually started having some yogurt now and then, then cheese, etc. Now she's back to normal but she isn't eating as much cheese or drinking as much coffee as before - no bad thing, really.
