adoption is the craziest thing

'Sup, y'all

The past 3 months of my life have been insane, particularly March; our birth mother went into labor early (31 weeks) and delivered freakishly healthy superbabies on March 3. Both boys are out of incubators and mostly feeding from bottles at gestational age 34 weeks. The birth mother's parental surrender became irrevocable as of this afternoon, which is why I'm only posting about it now.

I have a PLETHORA of stories to tell about the adoption process that ain't happening in a googlable forum but the main takeaway is that I feel like someone waved a magic wand at me and PRESTO I have children

btw super mazel tovs, cutest pics ever on the fbz.

Mordy , Monday, 24 March 2014 22:21 (eleven years ago)

Congratulations!!!!!!! That is so awesome.

How are the babies? Still in the NICU? What do they weigh? Pictures?

I'm unreasonably excited for you!

carl agatha, Monday, 24 March 2014 22:24 (eleven years ago)

thrilled for you both. i hear those adopted kids are pretty awesome, too.

r. bean (soda), Monday, 24 March 2014 22:31 (eleven years ago)

Thank you thank you!

The kids are in Level II care in the hospital. It's basically the super chill section of the NICU; they still have feeding tubes but have been getting most of their meals by bottle for almost a week. They've been weaned out of incubators and are rapidly approaching take-home weight (one is 5 lbs, the other is 4 lbs 14 oz). At this point, we just need them to exclusively bottle feed, continue to gain weight and not have any crashes on their vitals that require intervention (another scary superbaby fact: they have not needed intervention since their birth).

Wahaca Flocka Flame (DJP), Monday, 24 March 2014 22:33 (eleven years ago)

That was Ivy's situation, too - they're called "feeders and growers." It's maddening to have to wait! I'm so happy they are doing so well. I can't wait until you can take them home.

carl agatha, Monday, 24 March 2014 22:39 (eleven years ago)

Don't forget the pictures for us chumps who aren't on Facebook.

carl agatha, Monday, 24 March 2014 22:41 (eleven years ago)

I'll need to get to a computer to finagle pictures; I have intentionally only made my phone capable of posting pics to Facebook and Twitter

Good work, DJP. Kids will be great if you keep them away from Dirty Dancing.

Those are some handsome babbies! I love the look on the little guy's face (the one wearing the crimson shirt) in the pic with you and the boys--he's looking like you like "oh damn, that's Dad."

Thank you, everyone!

Yesterday we had the boys transferred to a hospital in Boston so that we could sleep at home. The Portland hospital was thinking that D would be released first with J leaving a few days behind; the Boston hospital looked at them and basically was like "we expect these guys to be out of here Monday" (!!!!!!!!) The Boston hospital is also feeding them twice as much as Portland was and neither boy is having problems eating.

They're pretty great, right?

Wahaca Flocka Flame (DJP), Sunday, 6 April 2014 00:15 (eleven years ago)

I imagine you are busy with a few (well, two) other things right now, but I hope at some point you're open to sharing more about your adoption experience. I have some social work colleagues who work in adoption, and it does, in face, sound like the craziest thing. Interested in your perspective.

mom tossed in kimchee (quincie), Sunday, 6 April 2014 01:44 (eleven years ago)

in fact, not in face

totally! i never realized that a fun thing about being a twin would be co-napping.

call all destroyer, Sunday, 6 April 2014 02:31 (eleven years ago)

I'm in the process of doing this right now, actually; I don't know anything about your situation or experience prior to this point but if it's anything like mine it was a hell of a trip, so congratulations.

joygoat, Sunday, 6 April 2014 02:59 (eleven years ago)

in fact, not in face

In face as well

I will be much more open to talking in September when everything is finalized. I will say that the boys rule and I love them and leave it at that.

Wahaca Flocka Flame (DJP), Sunday, 6 April 2014 03:35 (eleven years ago)

I am super happy for those of you tht have met the twins, but as a dude that has not yet met them I hate you all.

one year passes...

Has anyone fostered children? Or been fostered? Or would this be better in a new thread?
