ian, nice find on that chris smither. it's a surprisingly great album for being mostly covers in the mid-80s, and it's also super tough to find in the wild. one of the few legitimately good records on adelphi. do you dig that rockin foo, though? i wanted to but the vox rub me the wrong way.

moe handy, Monday, 25 March 2013 16:30 (eleven years ago) link

There are plenty of good records on Adelphi! Well, at least all the Suni McGrath records, and tbe Gerry Goffin double, and Patrick Sky's dirty record. and I like the Sam Firk too.
Rockin' Foo is okay, for a buck I can't go wrong. Also, no one wants to buy that record so I may as well hold on to it.

i guess i'd just rather listen to canned heat? (ian), Monday, 25 March 2013 16:37 (eleven years ago) link

do you fuck w. Jack Hardy, Moe?
Even his eighties records are pretty good I think. Some people peg him as working in the Leonard Cohen style, and I guess he does fall in that school of songwriting about characters/places. Hell of a voice imo, and a great songwriter.

re: adelphi, yeah, fair enough... i guess my problem is that i only ever see the endless garbage hippie string band dreck.

re: hardy, i have only ever seen that first one talked about by klausman, i think. or maybe you? i got the impression that copies turned up in NYC fairly regularly but i've definitely never seen one on the west coast. it sure looks up my alley. will happily trade you for your next double of any of his.

moe handy, Monday, 25 March 2013 16:59 (eleven years ago) link

yeah, they're definitely NYC records. i was surprised to find 'the cauldron' in RI. think you'd dig 'em. will keep my eyes open.

Digging Follakzoid and HolyDrug Couple fwiw.

I like Follakzoid less ... they sound like other stuff I like but it's kinda "basic krautrock 101" imo. Still was glad I saw em.

dmr, Monday, 25 March 2013 19:28 (eleven years ago) link

really couldnt hang w follakzoid or holydrug couple for their first records. they sort of put me off ordering sacred bonez stuff for a while tbh...

69, Monday, 25 March 2013 19:31 (eleven years ago) link

Ha that's funny cuz they are getting me interested in Sacred Bones again. I find the Men very boring.

Trip Maker, Monday, 25 March 2013 21:09 (eleven years ago) link

you and me both

69, Monday, 25 March 2013 21:13 (eleven years ago) link

yeah I just posted on the Men thread today haha. new one is not so good. Leave Home was solid though

dmr, Monday, 25 March 2013 23:12 (eleven years ago) link

i got some dope 78s from my friend john today, including a narmour & smith record that came from Crumb's collection.

Got a nice og copy of The Four Tops on Top ('66 - has "Shake Me, Wake Me" on it) for a dollar at the swap meet yesterday. Another great sounding Motown mastering job!

timellison, Tuesday, 26 March 2013 02:01 (eleven years ago) link

someone brought a copy of the mountain bus album into the store. some radio station graffiti on the cover, but the vinyl is clean. gonna keep it. also a super-clean WLP copy of the eclection album on elektra. sounds amazing. also a copy of the Just Vandy album. cover ain't so hot cuzza the radio thing - stickers/writing - but the vinyl is really clean. i might keep it. nice record, but not like a mind-blowing record. femme folk from 1972.

scott seward, Sunday, 31 March 2013 17:10 (eleven years ago) link

i've wanted that mountain bus for years but can never bring myself to spend money on it.
i'd be happy with an affordable copy of the akarma reissue at this point.

i guess i'd just rather listen to canned heat? (ian), Sunday, 31 March 2013 18:00 (eleven years ago) link

paying a lot of money for old akarma vinyl is just ridikkilus to me.

scott seward, Sunday, 31 March 2013 18:08 (eleven years ago) link

yeah, it's dumb. but if i found a copy for $20 i wold buy it, i guess. especially cuz the mountain bus one comes with a bonus LP.

i guess i'd just rather listen to canned heat? (ian), Sunday, 31 March 2013 18:26 (eleven years ago) link

20 bucks is fine. when i see them for 50 or higher though!

scott seward, Sunday, 31 March 2013 18:40 (eleven years ago) link

byron has an old boot of that spirit of the lotus juice album or whatever that your friend just put out and its like 50 bucks. and i wanna tell them that there is a new reissue but i always forget to.

scott seward, Sunday, 31 March 2013 18:42 (eleven years ago) link

lol. i had that bootleg, sold it before the reissue came out, and even then i think i only got like 25 bucks or so.

the limpest of ssw collections just rolled through my local goodwill. i had to stop myself from buying 2nd and 3rd copies of unsellable stuff i love (jonathan edwards, jd souther, etc.). this dude was a total kindred spirit.

i love the west records. in a weird way.
is that david wiffen at the bottom?

i guess i'd just rather listen to canned heat? (ian), Monday, 1 April 2013 23:08 (eleven years ago) link

yeah, it's a double. you need?

moe handy, Monday, 1 April 2013 23:21 (eleven years ago) link

i've had the west a couple times and always sold it but i've been so into the ron cornelius record the last couple of years that i figured i had to give it another shot when the price was right. still looking for the 2nd west record to give it another go 'round as well...

moe handy, Monday, 1 April 2013 23:22 (eleven years ago) link

nope, i've got the wiffen. love it.

i guess i'd just rather listen to canned heat? (ian), Monday, 1 April 2013 23:51 (eleven years ago) link

i think the 2nd one is the west record with a version of "july you're a woman"? love their version of that great song

i guess i'd just rather listen to canned heat? (ian), Monday, 1 April 2013 23:52 (eleven years ago) link

i love the west albums. i was just playing that record on top the other night. the dude on a&m. that's good stuff! would be totally happy to find that stuff at the thrift store.

scott seward, Tuesday, 2 April 2013 00:01 (eleven years ago) link

i was listening to judy mayhan the other night too! i want that libby titus album. or i want to hear it anyway.

scott seward, Tuesday, 2 April 2013 00:02 (eleven years ago) link

god i can totally see that blonde beardo sitting at the table on the cover of that one album. even though you can't see him in the picture. forget his name. not a great album.

scott seward, Tuesday, 2 April 2013 00:03 (eleven years ago) link

i like casey kelly too. i like a lot of this stuff.

scott seward, Tuesday, 2 April 2013 00:04 (eleven years ago) link

haha. yeah, that one's a bit of a stinker. roger troy. it looked like it had swamp-funk potential with a penn/oldham track but it's pretty doo doo mid-70s soft soul and stinky r&b.

moe handy, Tuesday, 2 April 2013 00:18 (eleven years ago) link

judy mayhan is pretty interesting. i guess she has a bunch of records but i don't think i've seen any of them before. rad and unexpected cover of one of my fave tracks on the first little feat lp.

moe handy, Tuesday, 2 April 2013 00:22 (eleven years ago) link

oh, and i'll try to remember to rip the libby titus someday soon. haven't jammed it yet so i can't comment on its quality.

moe handy, Tuesday, 2 April 2013 00:23 (eleven years ago) link

libby titus is okay, casey kelly good too.

slim pickings of late:

holy modal rounders - good taste is timeless (sundazed reissue)
john fahey - the transfiguration of blind joe death (transatlantic issue, so very good)
sir douglas quintet - best of (early eighties takoma release, really like some of the stuff on here, so going to have to explore their releases some more)
les percussions de strasbourg - americana (compositions by varèse, chávez & cage, nz press, so no nice shiny silver prospective 21e siècle cover, oh well!)

no lime tangier, Tuesday, 2 April 2013 10:11 (eleven years ago) link

Does that Fahey come with the book? I found the same copy at an antique store but it was missing that :(

Evan, Tuesday, 2 April 2013 14:39 (eleven years ago) link

i think only the original US pressing on Riverboat had the book, on that Fahey rekkerd.

i guess i'd just rather listen to canned heat? (ian), Tuesday, 2 April 2013 14:47 (eleven years ago) link

i actually scored that fahey x2 (sold the more knackered copy to my brother at a slight profit), and (as above) no books, though you can read the liners on johnfahey.org (written by a pre-canned heat al wilson, apparently).

no lime tangier, Tuesday, 2 April 2013 15:20 (eleven years ago) link

whoops, make that johnfahey.com

no lime tangier, Tuesday, 2 April 2013 15:29 (eleven years ago) link

Oh! This is what I was remembering... are these components mismatched?

Evan, Tuesday, 2 April 2013 17:44 (eleven years ago) link

Yeah it looks like the Riverboat version says so along the bottom of the cover. And the book in the link above says Riverboat on it as well.

Evan, Tuesday, 2 April 2013 17:46 (eleven years ago) link

*cover of the record sleeve (looked it up)

Evan, Tuesday, 2 April 2013 17:46 (eleven years ago) link

went to the library sale I mentioned on the "should I buy this" thread, some pretty good scores, will break it down later. 2 full boxes of 78s for $10. Tampa Red! Eartha Kitt! almost a whole box of Okeh that I bought w/o looking that is not as good as I had hoped. "Ya Gotta Quit Kickin' My Dog Aroun'" by Gid Tanner and his Skillet Lickers, I kinda just grabbed whatever had cool indie labels. about 100 all told.

the world's most impertinent web designer (sleeve), Wednesday, 3 April 2013 19:52 (eleven years ago) link

Fun! I wonder if that sort of thing happens around here in NJ, never thought to look into it.

Evan, Wednesday, 3 April 2013 21:04 (eleven years ago) link

also found a 78 by William Baranco & His Rhythm Bombardiers ("Night & Day b/w "Weeping Willie") featuring a "C. Mingus" on bass - is this who I think it is?

the world's most impertinent web designer (sleeve), Wednesday, 3 April 2013 22:07 (eleven years ago) link

sorry WILBERT Baranco
