jay bolotin is sick. nice find.

i came across a pretty sweet batch of funk/soul/jazz today at the marysville flea (near my wife's hometown, i go at least 10 times a year and buy records maybe a quarter of the time. shit, there's actually records there maybe only 50% of the time.). if i hadn't bought these today - and suggested to the seller to get the rest of their LPs out of the sun - they would have been warped by the first sunday in may.

this was the sonic highlight:

and this was the monetary highlight:

http://imageshack.us/a/img801/4039/img1415jt.jpg

also got:
the general - life in the big city 12"
infinity - spread the word (doo doo oakland modern gospel that still fetches some bank, thankfully)
buncha major label boogie stuff i can't remember now

moe handy, Monday, 22 April 2013 08:08 (eleven years ago) link

oh, yeah, also:
bobby hutcherson - san francisco
marion brown - duets
some sealed eddie palmieri lp

moe handy, Monday, 22 April 2013 08:10 (eleven years ago) link

azar lawrence - summer solstice

the fact that i found all these in marysville is still kinda blowing my mind.

moe handy, Monday, 22 April 2013 08:12 (eleven years ago) link

i am having kind of a similar thing happen. people ask me all the time why i still go to thrift stores, and if i ever find things etc, and the answer is for like days like today --

8 conlon nancarrow LPs, two david hykes, george crumb, elliott carter, some private new age piano things that rule, sealed CRI titles, two steve roach records, henry cowell shit, sealed windham hill stupidness. love it!

i guess i'd just rather listen to canned heat? (ian), Tuesday, 23 April 2013 21:20 (eleven years ago) link

yes, EIGHT conlon nancarrow LPs. two complete sets of the complete recorded works. one for me, one for the internet/record fair.

i guess i'd just rather listen to canned heat? (ian), Tuesday, 23 April 2013 21:21 (eleven years ago) link

steve roach! shit, i would love to find some steve roach vinyl. the shit is r@re l@@k even at actual record stores ime.

christmas candy bar (al leong), Tuesday, 23 April 2013 21:22 (eleven years ago) link

yeah, they were not super popular records... one of the ones i got sells for occasionally stupid money on discog, and most of this stuff is sealed.

i guess i'd just rather listen to canned heat? (ian), Tuesday, 23 April 2013 21:22 (eleven years ago) link

very cool! my in-town thrift stores usually suck, I need to get out to the coast to really score (like my post above).

my mental killfile seems to be working (sleeve), Tuesday, 23 April 2013 21:44 (eleven years ago) link

this place usually has NOTHING good for records. and usually less than 100 things total.
they also had a bunch of hebrew records today, but i don't know if i can just wander into that shit blind.

i guess i'd just rather listen to canned heat? (ian), Tuesday, 23 April 2013 21:46 (eleven years ago) link

you never know.

scott seward, Tuesday, 23 April 2013 21:47 (eleven years ago) link

that's my motto.

scott seward, Tuesday, 23 April 2013 21:47 (eleven years ago) link

wlp w/ both stickers, yo. kinda disproportionately psyched about this one. sadly has some repeating marks on it, otherwise it would be my copy for life (as it is i guess i'll just have to keep two copies of this thing).

I like that sticker, it's a thought bubble.

Trip Maker, Wednesday, 24 April 2013 21:24 (eleven years ago) link

bought half a dozen Kate wolf LPs for a buck apiece, all minty fresh.
Also:
John fahey - after the ball
Calexico - spiritoso
Julie Driscoll/Brian auger - jools (ridiculously good shape, like it arrived out of a time machine. Best condition record from that time I've ever seen. )

christmas candy bar (al leong), Wednesday, 24 April 2013 21:28 (eleven years ago) link

kate wolf's song "you're not standing like you used to" is probably the SADDEEST SONG EVER

fyi: this is a serious album. so good. never seen it before last Saturday.

Calexico's Spiritoso is fantastic! I don't know whether people here generally perceive them to be kind of adult-contemporary as a band at this point or not but I love them and am very excited about this RSD release.

Got nice copies today of Randy Newman's 12 Songs ($5), Jefferson Airplane's Bark ($8), and the Byrds reunion album with the two Neil Young covers ($6). Which confirms something I've always maintained: put away your guide, sell LPs in good shape for a reasonable price, and I'll be buying.

had fun with my friends at the flywheel record fair in Easthampton today. saw lots of people i like. i like being on the front steps of the building. outside. next to my pal andy. brought my boombox and played lots of 80's metal and miami bass and indian classical tapes. so glad i did that. nobody ever brings tunes. traded with people which was nice and which meant i didn't spend a ton of cash. spent about 150 bucks. after i paid for my table i made a nice profit. i sold records to 33 people which is almost the speed of a long-playing record. here's some stuff i brought home. keeping a bunch of it. got some stuff for the store, but mostly i shopped for me today.

scott, i dig that brush arbor LP. they also have an earlier private record under a different name that is reallllly good. the group is fool's gold and the LP is called kentucky faith. highly recommended.
http://www.theancientstar-song.com/2010/03/kentucky-faith/

coincidentally i just picked up a marj snyder LP i'd never seen before (that lady has a shitload of LPs) and brush arbor is the backing band. haven't spun it yet, though.
