mostly just him and guitar. but a couple of tracks have other people playing. andy pratt. robin batteau. recorded in 1971, but put out in 1974. really nice guitar sounds. and legitimately "stoner folk". very nice.

went to a guy's house around the corner to look at records and he had this and i really wanted it but he wouldn't sell it:

http://www.popsike.com/php/detaildatar.php?itemnr=130890774690

made me a little sad. such a cool record. he said if he ever decided to sell it he'd let me know.

i did get this from him which is pretty good:

I found decent records for 2 dollars each on the drive to Houston yesterday
Larry Jon Wilson - New Beginnings (Monument) Nice copy
Larry Jon Wilson - Loose Change (Monument)
Tommy Young - All The Time (Texas Domino) Rhodes Lounge record
Carol Hall - Beads and Feather (Elektra)
Wild Oats - S/T (Clouds)
Tornados - Telstar (London)

JacobSanders, Friday, 5 July 2013 00:54 (eleven years ago) link

awwwwwwwwww i need that larry jon 'loose change' if you ever see a double. i love new beginnings.

i guess i'd just rather listen to canned heat? (ian), Friday, 5 July 2013 02:38 (eleven years ago) link

loose change is ok... one sick jam iirc. sojourner is pretty rough as well. first 2 + the drag city lp are where it's at.

moe handy, Friday, 5 July 2013 19:12 (eleven years ago) link

Excellent shape all:

Soft Machine -- Third ($10)
Moody Blues -- Days of Future Passed (Deram original--$7)
Intruders -- Save the Children ($5)
First Choice -- Armed and Extremely Dangerous ($5)

The Moody Blues is sort of silly, as I expect there won't be anything of interest beyond the two hits. But I've never owned it, and the original-pressing clinched it.

clemenza, Sunday, 7 July 2013 17:33 (eleven years ago) link

moody blues are great and underrated by hipsters of today imo

i guess i'd just rather listen to canned heat? (ian), Sunday, 7 July 2013 17:39 (eleven years ago) link

I like a few of the early '70s hits, love the Timothy Leary song, love "Tuesday Afternoon." I just meant that my sense of Days was always that it was a lot of orchestral bombast. (Passed on a $4 copy of the LP with "Go Now"...if it's still there next week, I'll relent.)

clemenza, Sunday, 7 July 2013 17:43 (eleven years ago) link

FYI: the two 70's Justin Hayward solo albums - Blue Jays and Songwriter - are great and should be beloved by hip people everywhere and you can get them for nothing at used record stores.

scott seward, Sunday, 7 July 2013 18:26 (eleven years ago) link

yeah, total dollar records. good shit.

i guess i'd just rather listen to canned heat? (ian), Sunday, 7 July 2013 19:17 (eleven years ago) link

Days of Future Passed is the first record I noticed my dad playing when I was a little kid, probably 4. I vividly remember laying on the floor and listening to night in white satin and being transported. I think Emotional Rescue was the next record my dad played that I used to ask him to play a lot.

JacobSanders, Monday, 8 July 2013 00:11 (eleven years ago) link

"I'll Always Love My Mama" is really nice on that Intruders album.

timellison, Monday, 8 July 2013 00:32 (eleven years ago) link

my dad has a whole bunch of Moody Blues records, I used to vibe hard on the covers of In Search of the Lost Chord and Every Good Boy Deserves Favour. In Search of the Lost Chord has some jams, I kinda like Ride My See-Saw.

brb, gonna change my Facebook cover image to ELP's Tarkus.

dmr, Monday, 8 July 2013 19:05 (eleven years ago) link

Another good reason to own an original pressing of Days of Future Passed: the album's master tapes were damaged not long after and every reissue sold since 1978, even on vinyl, has been a remix with significant changes. Some of the original vocals and orchestral parts have been permanently lost.

oof yeah I guess it is 4 LPs so £53 is not a bad deal but that's too rich for my blood.

the price has actually gone down quite a bit since RSD, I couldn't afford it before but I got a work bonus and went for it.

ian, I think I do need another copy of that record, but I got mine from a seller called Tone Vendor, in Florida. shoot me an email if you get a chance to work that out.

sleeve, Saturday, 20 July 2013 17:45 (eleven years ago) link

huh, if it came thru tone vendor you might be better off writing to them? but i can probably get a copy for you. i have a personal copy which, lets be honest, i will never listen to.

but it's so good! anyway, yeah, if you happen upon a spare let me know. I think mine is OK, will listen soon.

found some good stuff at the ps321 flea market in park slope. this one guy has consistently had some good "exotica" type joints and interesting records in general. I got Jean-Jacques Perrey "Moog Indigo" off him a couple months ago.

les baxter - tamboo!
ray barretto - s/t (some kind of compilation, pretty great)
peter brown - do you wanna get funky with me

dmr, Sunday, 21 July 2013 03:47 (eleven years ago) link

i am all about lounge/exotica stuff this summer. phase 4 organ records are my shit. and les baxter & martin denny.

I meant to write that I left behind a bunch of late 70's funky jazz and prog records. It was odd finding those records at that goodwill. they only had a few records out and I asked the lady if they happen to have more records and she left me look at these tubs of records some guy had brought in. Lots of soft machine, Hawkwind, Mountain. I almost bought everything, but I'm trying very hard to scale back my record buying. She said he told her he's going to bring more in this week so we'll see.

JacobSanders, Wednesday, 24 July 2013 23:57 (eleven years ago) link

you should have bought it all. you can always trade hawkwind and soft machine records! great stuff though. my heart would have been fluttering.

scott seward, Thursday, 25 July 2013 00:01 (eleven years ago) link

i mean they are a dollar a piece right?

scott seward, Thursday, 25 July 2013 00:01 (eleven years ago) link

they were .79! I should go back, right?

JacobSanders, Thursday, 25 July 2013 00:03 (eleven years ago) link

yeah go back jacob! we'll all chip in to buy em all!

69, Thursday, 25 July 2013 00:04 (eleven years ago) link

OMG 79 CENTS

69, Thursday, 25 July 2013 00:04 (eleven years ago) link

oof, yes.

scott seward, Thursday, 25 July 2013 00:04 (eleven years ago) link

curbing your record buying only counts if you are paying top $$$$ for stuff and need to check yourself. friggin' thrift store bounty is another thing all together.

scott seward, Thursday, 25 July 2013 00:05 (eleven years ago) link

It's just that since coming to Oklahoma, I've bought around 150 records, maybe more I dunno, and add that to all of the baby related items, moving which will happen in a few months will be tricky.

JacobSanders, Thursday, 25 July 2013 00:06 (eleven years ago) link

now you sound more like a can DON'T kind of guy instead of a can DO kinda guy.

scott seward, Thursday, 25 July 2013 00:09 (eleven years ago) link

HA!

JacobSanders, Thursday, 25 July 2013 00:10 (eleven years ago) link

other than finally getting a decent copy of an elevators album my fave thing to get this year might be the parasites of the western world album. i'd never heard it. its even been reissued! on de stijjjjllll. so amazing. really my kinda thing. perfect copy with poster and insert and everything. also finally got a copy of the affinity album on paramount. i like that one a bunch. and i FINALLY found a record on Playboy Records that i LOVE. mostly i hate that label. Brownstone. never seen it. just fills me with joy. so amazing.
