curbing your record buying only counts if you are paying top $$$$ for stuff and need to check yourself. friggin' thrift store bounty is another thing all together.

scott seward, Thursday, 25 July 2013 00:05 (eleven years ago) link

It's just that since coming to Oklahoma, I've bought around 150 records, maybe more I dunno, and add that to all of the baby related items, moving which will happen in a few months will be tricky.

JacobSanders, Thursday, 25 July 2013 00:06 (eleven years ago) link

now you sound more like a can DON'T kind of guy instead of a can DO kinda guy.

HA!

JacobSanders, Thursday, 25 July 2013 00:10 (eleven years ago) link

other than finally getting a decent copy of an elevators album my fave thing to get this year might be the parasites of the western world album. i'd never heard it. its even been reissued! on de stijjjjllll. so amazing. really my kinda thing. perfect copy with poster and insert and everything. also finally got a copy of the affinity album on paramount. i like that one a bunch. and i FINALLY found a record on Playboy Records that i LOVE. mostly i hate that label. Brownstone. never seen it. just fills me with joy. so amazing.

playboy is the worst label of all-time. second is wooden nickel. like, in terms of sheer overwhelming percentage of absolute garbage, i don't think any other major labels of the 60s/70s come close.

moe handy, Thursday, 25 July 2013 18:42 (eleven years ago) link

Olivia, maybe. even Olivia had 3 or 4 solid feminist funk jams.

scott seward, Thursday, 25 July 2013 21:47 (eleven years ago) link

seriously, the brownstone album rules.

scott seward, Thursday, 25 July 2013 21:47 (eleven years ago) link

sealed copy with no bids:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/vtg-sealed-BROWNSTONE-LP-funk-blues-rock-playboy-records-1973-/350840497921?pt=Music_on_Vinyl&hash=item51afb92701

if anyone out there likes seriously wailing heavy funk rock with strong female vocals a la lynn carey, this album is for you.

but maybe nobody here needs that in their life.

scott seward, Thursday, 25 July 2013 21:50 (eleven years ago) link

but, five days left. maybe the budding deejay shadows and peanutbutterwolves are all over the brownstone album. i have no idea what it sells for.

scott seward, Thursday, 25 July 2013 21:51 (eleven years ago) link

Jacob I will pay you double your cost for those thrift records ;) I'll even pay you for shipping! I really need a copy of Space Ritual... Anyway, I bet you could sell them all to us ILV types, saving you the trouble of moving them.

69, Thursday, 25 July 2013 23:18 (eleven years ago) link

no, there were some good jams other than that one. the baba yaga record. the bebe k'roche record. the mary watkins record. the linda tillery record. that's about it.

Found a copy of the Little Sister 45 that I didn't have. The Sly Stone-produced group - they had two 45s. "You're the One" is the one I just got - I had the other one.

timellison, Monday, 29 July 2013 04:43 (eleven years ago) link

that has somebody's watching you, right?

69, Monday, 29 July 2013 17:52 (eleven years ago) link

There are some different versions. There's a "You're the One" single that has part two of the song on the flip. The other one I've got is "Somebody's Watching You"/"Stanga," which is really good.

timellison, Monday, 29 July 2013 22:02 (eleven years ago) link

i bought a bunch of stuff in rhode island. mostly to sell at the next flea market & rekkerd fair, with a few ebayable items.

keeping for myself --

robert pete williams et al - angola prisoner's blues
ramblin thomas - 1928 (collects most of his Paramount recordings, on Biograph, never actually seen this one before.)
dando shaft s/t
incredible string band - wee tam & the big huge (orig U.K. double LP issue)

i guess i'd just rather listen to canned heat? (ian), Tuesday, 30 July 2013 15:30 (eleven years ago) link

Is there another record fair on the horizon? I've been kind of fizzled out on buying records lately... I guess that is fine because my budget has been going into fun weekend trips all summer.

I did happen to find Giant Sand - Long Stem Rant for $3 recently.

Evan, Wednesday, 31 July 2013 14:12 (eleven years ago) link

there's another brooklyn flea record fair in october, so i guess thate's still a ways away.

gonna be a feeding frenzy, like cabbage patch kids and tickle me elmos on christmas eve.
since it's organized by label i'm assuming most ppl are gonna rush straight for Blue Note and Prestige, but hell, there are lots of great places to go..

i guess i'd just rather listen to canned heat? (ian), Thursday, 1 August 2013 14:25 (eleven years ago) link

I'm debating trying it out but yeah it's gonna be ridiculous. the first sale session is on my birthday!

dmr, Thursday, 1 August 2013 16:33 (eleven years ago) link

happy birthday! your birthday is my wedding anniversary!

if u go on the first day, try and find me! i will be the guy looking in the old homestead & shanachie sections.

Oh shit can you browse Yazoo for me? There is no way I can get there on Thursday. Friday and Saturday probably aren't going to matter at all.

Evan, Thursday, 1 August 2013 19:15 (eleven years ago) link

yazoo is gonna be one of my first stops tbh.

hah when I read your earlier message about "lots of great labels to look at" I thought "Homestead"

so yes if I go I would see you there and we can fight over things ;)

dmr, Thursday, 1 August 2013 22:10 (eleven years ago) link

man, if that shit's arranged by labels i would go to the MISC label section first...

also, ian meant "old homestead" which is quite a different beast, entirely.

moe handy, Thursday, 1 August 2013 22:24 (eleven years ago) link

los blue jeans, Monday, 5 August 2013 03:25 (eleven years ago) link

These are all from the same Goodwill over two trips, I'll try to stop back again to see what else they've put out:

Javier Vazquez Y Su Salsa - "Javier"
Justo Betancourt - s/t
Yolanda Del Rio - Se Me Olvido Otra Vez
Heleno - s/t
Los Hijos Del Ray con Fernandito Villalona
Sonora Ponceña‎ - Tiene Pimienta
Vicentico Valdes - Amor Y Felicidad
Tito Puente - Homenaje A Beny
Brown Express - Pilares de Cristal
Hugo Blanco Y Su Conjunto - Las Gaitas de Simón
Frederic Hand - Baroque And On The Street
Mach 1 (The United States Air Force Rock Group) - Down To Earth

los blue jeans, Monday, 5 August 2013 03:37 (eleven years ago) link

Those look really great! I have the Mach 2 Air Force record, it's ok, sort of. Is 1 decent?

JacobSanders, Monday, 5 August 2013 03:39 (eleven years ago) link

ehh, not that great really. I mean, if it was a free concert in a park somewhere I would probably be like "passable ABACAB cover" but not something anyone really needs to listen to

Yolanda Del Rio is awesome, Vicentico Valdes is great too, produced by noted swanky cat LeRoy Holmes

los blue jeans, Monday, 5 August 2013 04:14 (eleven years ago) link

went to a local place cuz i heard the guy got good folk/bluegrass and picked up a bunch of Ian records cheap/wholesale. good deal all around. good folk/fiddle/blues/etc. my kinda deal.
