you might be surprised. i'm always surprised by what's still for sale at the end of the day at a record show or sale or even records sitting in record stores that have obviously been there for a while. most people - even shifty record-selling types - are looking for the same stuff. the weird stuff gets ignored because people don't know what it is.

yeah, im definitely gonna do some research on even the turdiest-looking major-label things!

I was trying to slow my roll a bit because I really just have too many records, but I broke the fast today. Stopped by Goodwill with the excuse of looking for some Halloween costume accessories, dug through the stacks, limited my pile to 9 records and was about to leave when I did a last-minute perimeter sweep. I've been working on a lounge mix and I couldn't choose a Stevens Express song that fits, it's such a horribly mundane but completely weird record, so instead I'm going to post the whole record on my blog, along with their only 45.

We saw signs for an estate sale way out in the country in a barn and decided to go. They had boxes of 45s and I went all of them. It was mostly country, doo wop, 50's teen pop, stuff I know nothing about, so I bought all of the off label stuff I found and just found this in the stacks along with early Mickey Gilley and a few early canjun 45's. Still sorting through them.

There were all of these early mercury George Jones, early Conway Twitty, Jerry Lee Lewis on Sun and loads of Elvis on RCA, they were all .25 cents each, but I backed out of buying them all.

yeah, lots of cool stuff. mostly country/hick stuff from the 40s/early 50s but a few r&b things and a few pre-war string band things, as well. a shit ton of delmore bros, bill monroe, wayne raney, lefty frizzell, hank sr., etc. and some cool obscurities. no tommy johnson but a ton of fun shit to jam.

wayne raney was a vocalist and, i think, harp player with the delmore bros for some time. they play on some of his solo stuff, too. he was poppier and did a lot of hillbilly boogie stuff. some turds but some killer shit, too.

There were a bunch of almost mint condition folk LPs at the thrift store. Couldn't just leave them sitting there. I actually thought I would flip them to one of the stores in town but the guy there didn't want them. So now I get to listen to them. Can't emphasize enough how beautiful these things are! Records look shiny and new, jackets incredible with almost no ringwear and great spines, original inserts, etc.
