i got the octopus LP on ESP Disk today. it's about 1/2 boring blues jamz and 1/2 cool folk rock tunes. surface noise though, i think because of a slight warp :(

Hey cool borad idea.

The other day I was in the local 2nd hand rekkid store and I found a bunch of Cocteau Twins albums and EPs on vinyl and they were all $30-$40 each!!! I'm sittin on a GOLDMINE, apparently? I have loads of Cocteaus vinyl inc long-baleeted 7" singles and stuff.

oh hey scott do you want mod powars here?

and the oscar goes to "HOT TUB TIME MACHINE!" (jjjusten), Thursday, 16 July 2009 03:22 (fifteen years ago) link

i don't know if i would ever use them. that's the thing. i was the moderator on i love books and i think i used my mighty powers all of once or twice. but maybe. maybe me and ian should have them and then i'll just let him do everything. cuz he's younger and stronger.

scott seward, Thursday, 16 July 2009 03:54 (fifteen years ago) link

I was thinking of Ian too. Ok, giving you both mod and if either of you don't want it let me know.

ok scott and ian u r mods. plz dont break the internet

and the oscar goes to "HOT TUB TIME MACHINE!" (jjjusten), Thursday, 16 July 2009 04:02 (fifteen years ago) link

good luck on the de-warping... let me know if you have success, and with what method. i've got a bunch of stuff i bought sealed with varying degrees of warpiness.

thanks for mod, jj. i won't break nothin.

i've been poking around ILX for a while and I Love Vinyl almost more than anything, so I might as well say Hi and give my AA story. i've been collecting records forever, starting with the little Disney book&record sets. my first non-kiddie LP was Sgt. Pepper's, then KISS. but the one that really got me hooked was this, which I got at a rad Japanese toy-store while buying Shogun Warriors. 7" on colored red robot flexi-disc!

yeah I can tell I will spend 80% of my ILX time here

sleeve, Friday, 17 July 2009 22:09 (fifteen years ago) link

My attempt to de-warp a record failed terribly, now it's more warped, so much so you can kind of pop it from concave to convex, it spins like a top on a regular flat surface :S

I was doing I think the glass sheet on record and put it in the sun with a weight in the very centre (convex facing out), and I suspect the glass or the base I used weren't flat, so I flipped the record over, put a lot more weight around it, and am wasting loads of energy via a lamp. I really hope this works.

EDB, Monday, 20 July 2009 18:25 (fifteen years ago) link

hooray to this board for inspiring me to think about finally organizing my vinyl again - it had to live in a storage locker when i lived in my last apartment and i have been so distractred w/homeowner crap that i just kinda dumped it pell mell into the crates and never got any further. trimmed the bushes this weekend and did a bunch of cleanup, so i think once i clean the gutters i can spend several guilt free hours in the mancave basement making things shipshape again.

wax onleck, wax affleck (jjjusten), Monday, 20 July 2009 18:29 (fifteen years ago) link

Oh good god, I've really fucked up that record, and dire measures are going to be taken to try to make it at least playable.

EDB, Wednesday, 22 July 2009 02:10 (fifteen years ago) link

sigh. . .

RIP record.

EDB, Thursday, 23 July 2009 22:30 (fifteen years ago) link

God, how could I be so fucking stupid.

Well, at least now I have a bowl that I'll never use, which cost me a good $10 and will be a symbol of my imprudence.

EDB, Friday, 24 July 2009 00:10 (fifteen years ago) link

i.e. the record turned into one of those record bowls.

EDB, Friday, 24 July 2009 00:11 (fifteen years ago) link

I love you, this board.

P.S. Warped vinyl lovers, check out Saul Levine's masterful Notes of an Early Fall.

arrgh - i was going to order an Ikea Expedit 4x4 shelf but shipping is $200 to Western MA!! figuring out Plan B...

The Magical Moods of (herb albert), Monday, 27 July 2009 17:03 (fifteen years ago) link

you should try various massachusetts craigslist sites

omar little, Monday, 27 July 2009 17:12 (fifteen years ago) link

you should go to ikea in massachusetts.

scott seward, Monday, 27 July 2009 17:19 (fifteen years ago) link

a 4x4 will easily fit in a car (unassembled, i mean.) so would a 5x5, actually, with the seats down. putting one together isn't what i would call "fun" tbh, but it's so worth it imo.

omar little, Monday, 27 July 2009 17:20 (fifteen years ago) link

it's not THAT far. we borrowed a van when we lived on martha's vineyard and went to the one in mass. such a crazy place. actually, there is one in connecticut that might even be closer to western mass.

scott seward, Monday, 27 July 2009 17:21 (fifteen years ago) link

putting them together made me want to kill myself. we bought two big ones and four smaller ones. moving one of the big ones into the store here assembled made me want to die too. cuz once they are put together there is no way in hell that you are gonna take them apart again.

scott seward, Monday, 27 July 2009 17:23 (fifteen years ago) link

i did that and shockingly enough it only took 45 minutes to reassemble my 5x5, unlike the 3-4 hours it took to put it together the first time.

Hello I Love Vinyl!

So, I've got an old Bang and Olufson record player/amp in one thing that doesn't work any more but is quite lovely. I am moving house on Friday. If anyone wants it for nothing, and can get to Green Lanes in north London by then, please do.

I need to check the model, but I think it's a Beogram 1500, and it worked fine (although the speed change was knacked) for about a year after rescuing from an attic, but then stopped producing any sound at all. I suspect this is something quite simple like a loose connection, but I got another turntable and I don't have room for three!
http://www.beoworld.org/prod_details.asp?pid=271

Plus a pair of small Beovox speakers, which worked fine, but need new cables (I cobbled together some horrific cheap connectors as the B&O cables had been slashed).

Or should we have a "Turntables bought/sold/given away" thread?

Jamie T Smith, Tuesday, 28 July 2009 15:43 (fifteen years ago) link

i started a turntable thread, feel free to use that. unless people think there should be a seperate gear swap thread. i'm a little hesitant of becoming to buy/trade oriented as a board - despite my own blatant shilling for my store - but i suppose if there were one thread devoted to buying/trading/giving stuff away that would be fine.

i've seen record-centric message boards that just look like long lists of records for sale. but that is one good thing about ilx's design. you can contain stuff to one place.

in fact, if someone has a question about something i might have to sell, keep it on my store thread or e-mail me. thanks!
