Cheap-Ass Records That Are Worth A Dollar Or Three Of Your Time

Hmmm, i wonder if i need that Nektar album i saw in the dollar bin? Well, of course you do, Nektar were great.

This is the thread for records you always see cheap and that you finally took a chance on and they turned out to be really good.

In other words, Poco to thread!

My tip for the day: Mark-Almond - Rising (CBS - 1972)

If you can't find this record for 3 dollars or less than you aren't looking hard enough. Take a hit off your skull bong and play the first side. Wow, pure mellow blissssssssssssssssssssssss. Find a clean copy. Heck, it's worth four bucks if you find a clean copy. Sure, the second side opens with loud horn prog and raging guitars (and rightous dannie richmond drum solos), but after that it is off to the land of nod again and it is luverly stuff.

you mean that dannie richmond? weird!

Ømår Littel (Jordan), Thursday, 16 July 2009 22:52 (fifteen years ago) link

yeah, that one.

scott seward, Thursday, 16 July 2009 23:05 (fifteen years ago) link

phil ochs greatest hits (not actually a greatest hits record.)

ian, Thursday, 16 July 2009 23:19 (fifteen years ago) link

every bargain ive ever laid hands on had space - magic fly in it. i am deeply saddened to imagine a household lacking that excellent album.

I always recommend Joe Jackson's Night and Day because it seems to be one of the most ubiquitous dollar bin records ever, and is totally and thoroughly an awesome record of faux-latin mod pop music and has bona-fide hits like Breaking Us in Two and Stepping Out.

dan selzer, Tuesday, 21 July 2009 05:02 (fifteen years ago) link

every time i buy a bunch of records from someone who liked joe jackson the first two are well-played and the other ten are pristine. same with people who liked elvis costello. they were always hoping to relive the majik of those debuts.

scott seward, Tuesday, 21 July 2009 05:07 (fifteen years ago) link

'Night and Day' totally rules. "Chinatown"!

Stormy Davis, Tuesday, 21 July 2009 05:10 (fifteen years ago) link

for the record, i've always felt that steppin' out is pretty much perfect.

scott seward, Tuesday, 21 July 2009 05:16 (fifteen years ago) link

i always liked the Mike's Murder soundtrack. You can probably find that cheap on vinyl. totally underheard/underrated.

scott seward, Tuesday, 21 July 2009 05:19 (fifteen years ago) link

i think this came up in some joe jackson thread, but i like lots of that shit other people dont (will stan for beat crazy and jumpin jive and um big world actually) but i get why people would drop off i suppose. night and day is supergenius tho.

wax onleck, wax affleck (jjjusten), Tuesday, 21 July 2009 05:20 (fifteen years ago) link

do you have mike's murder?

scott seward, Tuesday, 21 July 2009 05:20 (fifteen years ago) link

no, but obv i should fix this immediately.

wax onleck, wax affleck (jjjusten), Tuesday, 21 July 2009 05:22 (fifteen years ago) link

okay, all this talk really just makes me want to listen to look sharp and i'm the man! see, i'm as bad as all those other fair weather joe fans. my brother was true blue. he bought it all.

scott seward, Tuesday, 21 July 2009 05:23 (fifteen years ago) link

oh btw, anybody know if monie love 12" stuff is worth anything? somebody just dumped a bunch of queen latifah and monie love and lords of the new school (or maybe lords of the underground) white label and otherwise stuff at the goodwill near where i work and i certainly dont need it but i could use it to fund other stuff that is awesome.

xpost: i should probably blog (lol) about beat crazy. everyone hates it but it so badass. the first copy i got (worn out and replaced) i bought when i was 12 from the library bin for uh 5 cents maybe?

wax onleck, wax affleck (jjjusten), Tuesday, 21 July 2009 05:26 (fifteen years ago) link

mike's murder and night and day are actually good companion pieces cuz i think they were recorded around the same time.

x-post

scott seward, Tuesday, 21 July 2009 05:27 (fifteen years ago) link

hah nevermind the stuff i asked about, just did a google shopping search and it looks mostly bleak, like worth more than they would cost but not worth the time to deal with.

wax onleck, wax affleck (jjjusten), Tuesday, 21 July 2009 05:30 (fifteen years ago) link

monie love and queen latifah 12 inches aren't really worth much. though i like them both a lot. and i probably still own monie's grandpa's party and monie in the middle singles. and monie on latifah's ladies first is still one of all time favorite guest raps ever. monie has a radio show in philly now! of course i moved before that happened. figures.

scott seward, Tuesday, 21 July 2009 05:30 (fifteen years ago) link

uh, yeah, there you go.

scott seward, Tuesday, 21 July 2009 05:30 (fifteen years ago) link

hmmmm well maybe i need to own them just to hear them then. the ladies at the goodwill seem to be amused by the weird guy who keeps buying all those dumb old records, perhaps i will try to work a group discount.

wax onleck, wax affleck (jjjusten), Tuesday, 21 July 2009 05:35 (fifteen years ago) link

steven halpern! over the past two years, i think ive accumulated like 12 of these??

Is "Phil Ochs Greatest Hits" really a cheap record over there? You don't get it cheap in the UK, ever, so maybe I should actually try looking for it next time I'm over, eh?

(Cue someone posting to say they know of some shop that has twenty of them for 50p each in Kendal or somewhere, but you know what I mean).

Tim, Monday, 17 August 2009 09:14 (fifteen years ago) link

usually see it for around $3-5. If you need a copy let me know and I'll be happy to buy ya one next time I see it.

ian, Monday, 17 August 2009 17:04 (fifteen years ago) link

see, now, i was gonna bring up the fact that i've never seen that klaus schulze album for a dollar or three. i would certainly pick it up if i did see it!

main problem with cheap ochs that i see is condition. folkies were very mean to their records. they talk a good game about peace and love, but apparently this doesn't include loving vinyl. they are almost as bad as little girls with their monkees and beatles albums or even as bad as p-funk fans!

scott seward, Monday, 17 August 2009 17:08 (fifteen years ago) link

Yeah, I see Timewind usually priced around 8-15? schulze records aren't super common over here, except for body love for some reason?

ian, Monday, 17 August 2009 17:14 (fifteen years ago) link

i got timewind for $7, thought that was a deal. that's a REALLY LONG record, too, like 28+ minutes per side!! i didn't even think that was possible.

ETERNAL WAR AGAINST THE DICKS IS ALL WE CAN RESPECT (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Monday, 17 August 2009 17:45 (fifteen years ago) link

Well obviously it's not the Brain release, but Timewind goes for a couple of bucks here (Netherlands) quite often in 2nd hand record stores. And it's a brilliant record.

It's weird the variation you find with these things. I never would have thought of Space "Magic Fly" as a dollar record either... it's the kind of thing I *want* to find in dollar bins but they're all more like Neil Diamond kinda stuff.

I did find Klaus Schulze "X" in the dollar bin, double LP, inserts, and all... but it seemed like ana anomaly.

Chinavision (altair nouveau), Monday, 17 August 2009 18:05 (fifteen years ago) link

uh I don't know what was happening with my typing there

Chinavision (altair nouveau), Monday, 17 August 2009 18:06 (fifteen years ago) link

now, tangerine dream, those i've seen in dollar bins. phaedra is a pretty common record. stratofear is pretty easy to find.

not the really early stuff though. although even atem isn't impossible to find in stores. maybe not for a dollar though.

scott seward, Monday, 17 August 2009 18:31 (fifteen years ago) link

Is Tangerine Dream changing though? I picked up a lot of mine for $1, but I seem to be seeing them more often in the $5-$10 range for the above-mentioned titles. Also the findable titles seem to be skewing increasingly later... a lot more Exit, Le Parc, Hyperboria etc. Much less Phaedra. Could just be that Amoeba gets picked over though.

Chinavision (altair nouveau), Monday, 17 August 2009 18:38 (fifteen years ago) link

Yeah, I could redecorate my walls with Stratosfear and X albums, and still be cheaper off than buying wallpaper. Phaedra on the other hand seems pretty rare to come by here. Funny how this differs!

x-post

Still lots of good Shulze-related Innovative Communication stuff for cheap in the new age section.

Chinavision (altair nouveau), Monday, 17 August 2009 18:40 (fifteen years ago) link

x-post someday I *will* decorate a wall with copies of The Human League's "Dare." So far I've got about 15 copies.

Chinavision (altair nouveau), Monday, 17 August 2009 18:40 (fifteen years ago) link

:-D

used to be able to find peter baumann records cheap until the beardos took over the world.

scott seward, Monday, 17 August 2009 19:05 (fifteen years ago) link

i was thinking of having a section of my store devoted to nothing but copies of:

if youre in the bay area, check the tiiiiiiiiny new age section of berkeley rasputin!

69, Monday, 17 August 2009 20:47 (fifteen years ago) link

Heh I check that spot everytime I'm there (less often now since I moved to the city). It seems to have two states: nearly empty and the same old boring stuff as ever vs. recently filled with some niiice records (Aphrodite's Child, Froese/Baumann records, IC Records stuff etc) for cheap.
Actually the Berkeley Amoeba seems to generally have the amazing finds/dry as a bone crapshoot going on storewide whenever I'm there.

Chinavision (altair nouveau), Monday, 17 August 2009 22:44 (fifteen years ago) link

totally agreed. i also think it simultaneously gets fewer rad things and is more picked-over than SF amoeba, where i always find ridic stuff for cheeeeep.

69, Tuesday, 18 August 2009 18:16 (fifteen years ago) link

i may have said this before but sf amoeba's new age bargain section is such a gold mine

psychgawsple, Tuesday, 18 August 2009 20:16 (fifteen years ago) link

got the randy california "kaptain kopter" lp today... pretty sick jams for the $3 price tag.

ian, Wednesday, 19 August 2009 05:37 (fifteen years ago) link

i saw that in san jose last week, but it was traaaaashed so i left it

69, Wednesday, 19 August 2009 16:59 (fifteen years ago) link

I have real trouble leaving "Watermark" by Art Garfunkel behind when it's in any sort of decent condition. I love that LP, there's always someone who hasn't heard it and you play side one and they go "wow", and it's pretty much impossible to find for more than two of our sterling pounds.

Tim, Wednesday, 19 August 2009 17:20 (fifteen years ago) link

(You have to sort of gloss over that horrible version of "What a Wonderful World", but that's easy enough to do as long as you don't have a copy with a sticker on the front advertising it's damnable existence.)

Tim, Wednesday, 19 August 2009 17:21 (fifteen years ago) link

^^^ intersting. will investig8

69, Wednesday, 19 August 2009 17:25 (fifteen years ago) link

It's almost entirely Jimmy Webb songs, if that does anything to persuade or dissuade.

Tim, Wednesday, 19 August 2009 17:25 (fifteen years ago) link

that's a good deal for that randy california record. not easy to find.

TIM! If you are in New York I've got a copy of this for you for $4... If you want me to ship it, it might make the cost too much to be worthwhile.

The Bangles - All Over the Place turns up all the time, and it is just a sweet little record.

Aw Ian, I was (v briefly) in NYC but I completely failed to check this in time. Back in the UK now, thanks for taking the time on my behalf. :(
