if an album is available on both lp and cd do you always, without fail, choose the vinyl? do you have certain genres you might prefer on cd over vinyl for some reason? do you trade in the cd version of an album when it finally is available on lp (maybe a reissuing of a long out-of-print album or something previously never available on vinyl?)

i think i'm a little inconsistent sometimes w/r/t this sort of thing....i can say for certain that i pretty much buy everything only on vinyl unless i think the vinyl is way too expensive, or if it's under the "techno" genre umbrella. i'm 50/50 on hip-hop.

i don't buy a lot of it, but i actually prefer modern electronic stuff on cd. the record store where i used to live would get a lot of kompakt stuff on vinyl, which was nice, but i know for a fact that i listen to the CDs more because they are on cd. the flow is better. same with rap somewhat. instead of a triple-disc rap vinyl set, you can just listen to the whole thing in one gulp. stuff that is made digitally for cd, it just makes sense to listen to it on cd. new stuff i buy on vinyl is usually reissued analog stuff or stuff made by record-friendly people.

95% of my vinyl is dance 12"s. albums i'm not that fussed about, tbh - usually cheaper here on CD.

country, blues, jazz, classic rock, prog, world music, folk, soundtracks, psych, soul, funk, garage rock: always on vinyl
i'm also 50/50 on indie stuff. kinda depends upon the whole availability of a digital download, plus the quality of the pressing.

Tried to find an appropriate thread to ask this question, trawling through the archives I guess this thread seems most relevant.
Anyway, I am feeling a lot of ANGST over whether I should buy the CD or the LP of the new ENDTABLES reissue on Drag City. On one hand, the vinyl is just the original stuff, it would be cool to own on vinyl, and it's pretty damn cheap. On the other hand, I'm not a guy who is averse to CDs at all, and the CD has like twice as much material on it with the live stuff.
Anybody heard the CD? live stuff any good?

live stuff is great! i just have a promo cd. listened to it a lot. they didn't record a whole lot, so it is kinda nice to have the live stuff too.

my philosophy: buy records.

my philosophy is very similar to ian's.

yeah, but lots of extras can sometimes tip the balance. Joy Division's Substance record is a great example, the LP is missing a ton of random (great) tracks. but that was an exception, if there is no difference I will usually go for vinyl.

um hello, buy both.

as a gag, but i always think about shelling out for a copy of john fahey's RED CROSS record on LP, even though the CD version i have has an exclusive track that might be my favorite on the album...

!! did not know that, have had the 2LP for years. damn bonus tracks, they get me both ways.

its an untitled track, and it's only like 2:30 long, but it's kinda responsible for me loving john fahey -- i got into his music after he died...
