my cat scratches at my record shelves to wake me up in the mornings if/when he needs food. i find that if i make sure to feed him before bed he will not do this. although he chews the shit out of the plastic sleeves sometimes. partic the plastic i have on "music of indonesia" (folkways box.)

My cats leave my records alone *touch wood*
They do have a habit of sitting on the record player lid when I'm playing them though. Especially if I'm ripping them. They make them skip just to fuck with me.

too bad there isn't some sort of repellent spray for cats. one that smells like dogs. or a motion sensor device. one that makes the sound of a vaccuum cleaner if your cat gets too close to your records.
the cat and my two kids know - without me having to say anything - not to mess with my records or they will suffer a fate worse then death. it's understood.

i was thinking of making some storage cabinets with doors or lids, out of wood
we'll see

get softpaws for the claws, a cork for the mouth
our cats don't mess with records except to rub their cheeks against from time to time. and if you lay a record flat on the floor and close your eyes, when you open them there will be a cat asleep on top.

The dog and one cat don't bother with the records, but the other cat uses the exposed spines (and plastic sleeves covering them) as a scratch pad. I got new shelving and the lower shelves are now books and cds, the records start the 3rd shelf up and no problems any more. But some of the records still have claw marks in the spine -- boo.

my cat has not discovered the pleasures of clawing records and i hope she never will
my vinyl collection is still rather small so i haven't any shelving for them -- i've been keeping them in a couple of the larger ikea SNACK boxes, which are pretty good so far, sturdy plywood w/ metal reinforced corners and can be mounted onto casters, though not quite deep enough to completely house an upright LP. If you got the shallower version of the SNACK box, though, if would probably serve as a completely cat-proof lid.

Put an actual scratching post right next to the records? Then praise cat effusively if you catch her using the post -- petting, treats, tons of positive reinforcement.

I dunno, that's how cat people say you're supposed to redirect them to a desired location. I have definitely seen cats trained by this method go to their scratching things (post/box/etc) and scratch furiously and then look around to make sure you have noticed them doing it. It's cute.

hey guys, i got a new receiver yesterday so if everything goes well, i should be able to play vinyl again tonight. hi.
my cats leave my records alone, but the slipmat always gets covered in cat hair which gets on the records, even if i try to clean it off. i had to start putting an extra slipmat on top of that one when not in use.
― Ømår Littel (Jordan), Monday, 20 July 2009 17:59 (fifteen years ago) link
try using sticky tape to get the hair off of it. kind of annoying and tedious, but it should work.

our white cat is like that. she will sit by a doorway and just meow sadly until you nudge her through.

My cat would chew on the corners of all the cardboard record covers, so theve all been rendered a bit un-collectible now I suppose, though thats not as bad as my limited to 1000 special release of EVOL that I stood on and broke in half ;_;
Dont play or leave my rekkids out often enough for cat to roon. She just roons all my posters instead the beetatch.

do people generally bother with the outer sleeves that protect the jacket? i thought i would be diligent and bag everything up, but they are such a pain in the ass and come off when you slide them off the shelf, or stick out which looks bad. i know there are ones with sticky flaps but presumably those wear out pretty quickly?
you can arrange them with the opening facing up, but that extrication combined with the inner sleeves is like solving a puzzle every time i want to play a record.
alternatives? really i am hoping for the hive mind to justify not bothering.
― fakeducks, Wednesday, 12 August 2009 19:11 (fifteen years ago) link
I use sleeves on most of my records, open side up for easy shelving. Some people I know, not me, keep the LP outside the jacket so they can just slide it out w/o taking the plastic off. I don't mind taking plastics off really. It can be a pain, but...

yeeah. guess i am stuck. all part of the ritual of vinyl enjoyment, eh.
― fakeducks, Wednesday, 12 August 2009 20:11 (fifteen years ago) link
i mean, there are tons of folks who don't use sleeves at all! it just means more ringwear if they're packed tightly together. i used to be less diligent about it, then one of my old roommates had a party & someone puked on my records... so now i try to protect them.
― ian, Wednesday, 12 August 2009 20:20 (fifteen years ago) link
haha. i've had an amp fried by "party bodily fluids" (sadly, the perp was not immediately electrocuted) so not as unlikely as one might hope. in the end guess i am too anal to not attempt maximum protection. you would think there'd be some clever solution to the outer sleeve problems, perhaps from japan.
― fakeducks, Wednesday, 12 August 2009 20:36 (fifteen years ago) link
i know there are ones with sticky flaps
I hate these. half the time they stick to the record when you're trying to stick it back in. I use the regular plastic ones
― dmr, Wednesday, 12 August 2009 21:08 (fifteen years ago) link
ones with sticky flap are also more prone to tearing.
― ian, Wednesday, 12 August 2009 21:10 (fifteen years ago) link
bodily fluids aren't the problem so much as spilled beer...
not a fan of flaps.
I try to use one of these bad boys on most of my non-$1 records:

yes, open side up for easy shelving. It takes, what, 2 seconds to slip it off before taking the record out?

I've lived in a number of places and these are my solutions.
1) Use closet shelves that hug the ceiling, not the floor. I once had a brilliant closet / dressing room where the shelves wrapped around the perimeter of the space.
2) A garage or garage loft, if you have one.
3) Throw an attractive cover over shelving unit or row of records when you leave for the day.
4) Use one closet, if you have one to spare, to store LPs.

― mizzell, Thursday, 13 August 2009 16:37 (fifteen years ago) link
no. collectors do this so that they don't damage covers taking records out and putting them back in.
― scott seward, Thursday, 13 August 2009 17:08 (fifteen years ago) link
i do this. i recently changed from side-opening bags to top-opening bags, cause my expedit keeps the dust off, and everything slides out of the side-facers too much.
