Are you still interested in purchasing a copy of Tymon Dogg's "Battle of Wills" LP? If so, I have an EX+ (basically NM-) copy that I'm willing to sell to you (or anyone else for that matter) for a pretty good price if interested.

three months pass...

So... I didn't have the guts to pay the full (rightful) price for the Lilys record.

I'm very uncomfortable with my materialism in which I obsess over records I don't have, but I guess my latest "gee I really should own the vinyl versions" distracting thoughts are focused on the Kozelek catalog.

I wish that from the beginning I had subscribed to the Caldo Verde updates and pre-ordered every release he put out because I am a super fan and I should own all this exclusive/limited junk dammit! So much live material and rapidly appreciating vinyl versions I don't have! The torture.

Evan, Monday, 26 August 2013 14:43 (eleven years ago) link

Evan, Monday, 26 August 2013 14:46 (eleven years ago) link

Another maddening and nerdy category is the records-you'd-never-have-expected-to-go-out-of-print:

Cass McCombs - A
Cass McCombs - Prefection

Loads of these lying around in 2009-10 but no more...

Evan, Monday, 26 August 2013 14:48 (eleven years ago) link

i am trying really hard to abandon my need for material objects. not entirely, but if i have records lying around i love but don't listen to, it might be time to let them go..
but it's tough. where do you draw the line?

i guess i'd just rather listen to canned heat? (ian), Monday, 26 August 2013 15:01 (eleven years ago) link

its hard for me to have something for, like, 20 years or more and get rid of it even if i don't play it. especially if i never see it for sale. because i've had it for so long. and if i get rid of it what if i never see another one...this is the way you drive yourself crazy. so, its easier, in general, for me to take more recent stuff out of the house and into the store even if its super cool. the bond isn't as strong.

I've always been into collecting based hobbies. It gives me somewhere to focus energy where otherwise I'd feel lost without a "project" like it. I could find something more constructive but I'm addicted to the aesthetic and obviously the music and the uniqueness of each record.

Most of my holy grails have been found at antique malls, goodwills, flea markets and junk shops. Not only in texas, but Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Indiana, Tennessee, Ohio, Louisiana, Maryland, D.C. Mid-size to small towns are the best places to look. When I travel, it takes forever to get anywhere because I take every exit and stop everywhere. I just found a sealed copy of this http://collectorsfrenzy.com/details/120660417181/PATTERSON__PULTS_Second_Time_Around_private_psych at a thrift store, but I traded it for a soft rock record I've been wanting.

best thing i ever got at a thrift store was probably a McClung Brothers 78. Not because it's valuable but because it baffles me that a fiddle & guitar 78, that probably didn't sell many copies in new york despite being recorded there (at victor studios), would be the ONLY 78 in the shop.

i guess i'd just rather listen to canned heat? (ian), Sunday, 1 September 2013 02:21 (eleven years ago) link

i find stuff at thrift stores. law of averages. i go to the one in town a lot. and rarely find stuff. but every once in a while...

i got scooped bad this year by a local guy who haunts the thrift. he was there a couple minutes ahead of me and he got all kinds of cool sealed audiophile classical. small label early 80's fancy records. avant garde. smooth jazz audiophile records. soundtracks. i almost killed him. then i calmed down. he's a nice guy. karma and all that. he made good money on the stuff. and i got some of the classical later that he didn't sell online.

scott seward, Sunday, 1 September 2013 02:35 (eleven years ago) link

My best thrift finds have been Damnation of Adam Blessing's first LP and this new wave/punk from san diego comp. And both in the last month, otherwise almost nothing exciting except like Ernest Tubb records.

Got to a bookstore that got a record collection in recently and walked in 30 seconds after this kid found a sealed copy of the Mystic Zephyrs IV LP. Which can be a $800-1,000 record, it's like little kids doing Shaggs-y pop. But I was like "uh, you might want to look that up online before you open it." You know, if you want to pay your rent for a month, you lucky SOB.

Two copies of The Kaplan Brothers Nightbird are ending soon on ebay. One is in shrink but with a reserve that hasn't been met at $135. The other is a nice copy at $125. I really want this record.

only 1000 dollar record i've ever found at a thrift store is the first perry leopold album. great copy. still a fond memory. i didn't even know what it was at the time. pre-internet. i don't know if they actually sell for that much now. at one time they did.

JacobSanders, Sunday, 1 September 2013 16:14 (eleven years ago) link

I'd love to know how rare records end up there though. I'm imagining a collector moves out of the parents place to travel the world and mom is later cleaning out the room and drops the box off. Certainly nobody that knows what they have would allow it to get in these places?
