Thinking about getting a preamp so I can move one of my turntables into the room with my computer without having to bring my DJ mixer as well. I've got an audio interface so I'm not looking for some kind of USB thing. Just your classic RCA in/RCA out phono preamp. I'm also not looking to spend 12,000 dollars. Anybody have any experience with preamps in the under 200 range?

I've got a Belari V129 that's just lovely, and they fixed it for free when I blew a transistor doing a Stupid Thing.

looks like it's replaced with the VP130? Website says it's for magnetic cartridges. I have a pretty high-end DJ cartridge but I don't think it's magnetic.

looks good...and they have slightly more expensive models with an output control which can be helpful. I saw one complaint about it's frequency range and I think maybe my DJ mixer is better? I'm no audiophile and often have tin ears, but I want to do what's best. If the preamp on my mixer is better then most freestanding units, I'll stick with that, but I've also thought it colors it more or less. I know these preamps are generally better then most DJ mixers, but I have a very expensive DJ mixer.

hearing good things about the Project preamps as well.
Any idea of anyplace in NY, particularly outer boroughs that may carry hi-fi stuff so I don't have to wait to order should I decide? Turntable Lab only has a cheaper audio technica and a too expensive Grado. Mikey's Hookup only has a real cheap-o one. There used to be a hi-fi store in brooklyn heights but it closed ages ago.

I bought this:

Supposed to be great for the money. There's a few competitors in that price range, an NAD for instance, but I was drawn to this one.
They have a USB version which is cool. My audio interface has better DA converters so I don't really need that.

Very good choice I think. I have an NAD (PP-1, bit of a budget buy) I got when I bought my ProJect debut years ago, as my other components are NAD as well. It's adequate but the sound's a bit murky with some LPs I have (also new ones). Could be a lot of things but the owner of a high-end hifi shop I occasionally visit said it could be the PP-1 and suggested replacing it with a ProJect preamp which he was quite enthousiastic about.

Cool. Also read some great things about the Music Hall preamps but too late.

uh, i'm no audiophile and i don't ask for much out of my stereo system, but i bought this (i figured for $20 it's worth a shot) and it's been working just fine: http://www.amazon.com/Pyle-PP-999-Phono-Turntable-Pre-Amp/dp/B00025742A/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1249671505&sr=8-1

AS MENTIONED ABOVE...I went with the Project Phono Box II, which is at least somewhat of a minor audiophile one. Anything cheaper then that I wasn't so sure about.

Hey guys. Just got a nice Stanton T.92 for Christmas! Until now I've just had an old stock player despite having a lot of fun collecting for awhile. Never been much of an audiophile in that respect.
When I plugged it into my (much newer) Sony entertainment system that I had used previously for this, with experience you probably could have guessed that it is a bit quiet even with maxed volume.
What preamp do you recommend on a price to quality ratio? Was going to run across the street to Radioshack for convenience. Thoughts?

I bought a $100 one from Cambridge Audio, is that too much? I like it.

Thanks! Yeah, that might be a little high, though I don't know what an adequate model should cost.

Went to the close Radioshack, called ahead to one I needed to drive to who yes they have it. Once I got there of course no, they had no idea what I was talking about. Therefore, amazon.com it is.
