oh jeeze i am really tempted to bid on some of those country & quebecois 78s.

ian, Friday, 14 August 2009 03:52 (fifteen years ago) link

huh, christie's didn't know nat shilkret in 1979.

ian, Friday, 14 August 2009 03:56 (fifteen years ago) link

The only 78s I own are um, SCG 'Rookoo Bay" and John Fahey, whatever those things were on Perfect.

oh, and also, original copy of Moby Grape's 'Wow' for that Foxtrot song, which I've *still* never heard at correct spead.

I dunno, just never ever got into this scene at all. Seemed laughable when I could get everything on Document and Wolf LPs and CDs. and then spend the money I saved on rare free jazz and psych stuff. that didn't (at that time) have any other availability. 78s just seemed so beyond the pale, so Robert Crumb wannabe

Stormy Davis, Friday, 14 August 2009 05:21 (fifteen years ago) link

but just like any reissue campaign you can't really get "everything" on newer formats, which I think is one reason why people still collect 78's even when lots of stuff gets reissued on LP/CD.

also, they sound good, like 45s on steroids. and if you find one of those library A/V players with the switchable needles, they have tube amps! very nice in the living room.

I don't seriously collect them, but I will pick them up if they are interesting and cheap, mostly cuz I have the player. Plus, a lot of the "make your own record" things, which I try to collect, are 78 rpm.

sleeve, Friday, 14 August 2009 06:20 (fifteen years ago) link

granted, even the weirder and more obscure 78s are being reissued now as in Secret Museum, Black Mirror, Victrola Favorites, Mississippi recs, etc, but this is a relatively new development.

sleeve, Friday, 14 August 2009 06:21 (fifteen years ago) link

Ha, I taped this from my normal deck, but I hauled out my supercool 'portable' wooden 'fold-down deck' and tried to record that track from there. It came out a bit scratchy, but was OK.

Later, got the CD, and found it was exactly like that!

Grading 78s makes me so neurotic!

not everything is a campfire (ian), Wednesday, 22 September 2010 16:50 (fourteen years ago) link

like.. V, V+?!?! what kind of metric do ppl use to determine this shit? like, percentage of grooves worn? too much work.

not everything is a campfire (ian), Wednesday, 22 September 2010 16:54 (fourteen years ago) link

Grading
M- Just this side of mint. Few things in this world are perfect,
so we don't use M. In fact, we very seldom use ME+
A choice copy with no wear whatsoever.
E Excellent. Virtually no trace of groove wear with only
minimal traces of use and handling.
E- An above average record with a slight degree of groove wear,
but not enough to seriously detract from its audio quality.
V+ Obviously well played, but still enjoyable. Noticeable
graying in the grooves.
V Very well worn, but listenable. Expect the surface
noise to be significant. There may be some stressed grooves.
V- Wiped out. Played with the right equipment, however, you may still
derive a certain degree of pleasure from a record in this condition.
P Possibly unplayable.
Note that grading is visual! Double pluses and minuses are used when needed to more accurately describe a record's condition (i.e., E-- falls between E- and V++).
If the two sides differ, the lower grade is used. If they differ markedly, a combination grade such as V+/E-- may be employed. Please note that visible graininess will
always be described on any record grading E or better, even if the record in question might be expected to exhibit such surfaces (Victor Scrolls, HMVs and Deccas,
for instance). Graininess will also be described on lower grade records when the condition is more pronounced. Brown wax cylinders are graded audibly (unlike any
other records in this catalog). Each cylinder is assigned a numerical value between 1 and 9, with 1 being totally inaudible and 9 being as new.

Don Kent, legendary 78 collector & reissuer, is in the hospital after being badly burned when his house caught fire. His records are okay.
If anyone in NC wants to help move the records this week, get in touch with Jesse T Stewart of Green River Records.

these are the 78s i got today from my buddy john!

augusta trio - down yonder / whistling rufus (champion)
narmour & smith - gallop to georgia breakdown / kiss me waltz (okeh, from the collection of r. crumb)
red headed fiddlers - texas quickstep / never alone waltz
da costa woltz's southern broadcasters - take me back to the unny south / are you washed in the blood of the lame (acetate dub from herwin)
john hammond - little birdie / pretty bolly (acetate dub from challenge)
len & joe higgins - the old white mule / slippery elm tree (columbia)

i guess i'd just rather listen to canned heat? (ian), Tuesday, 26 March 2013 00:47 (eleven years ago) link

just peeked in the discography -- the augusta trio is a pseudonym for shores southern trio, feat. bill shores. they did one of my favorite fiddle records "goin' crazy" (it's not on youtube or i was gonna post it. it's on the 'hell broke loose in georgia' comp on county.)

i guess i'd just rather listen to canned heat? (ian), Tuesday, 26 March 2013 01:44 (eleven years ago) link

got a weird acetate dupe of this record today, cheap -- such a killer.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FZs-P_MNLLE

the provenance of the acetate is disputed. the john hammond i got today is from the same set of records. years ago someone had a box of them they sold on ebay -- hand-typed labels, lots of acetate copies of some incredibly rare records. and in good shape. jeeze. at the time i got only one though i bid on many. charlie bowman's "forky deer" / "moonshiner and his money." my friend john got 7-8 of them at the time.

i guess i'd just rather listen to canned heat? (ian), Tuesday, 26 March 2013 01:48 (eleven years ago) link

not disputed -- unknown, i guess.

i traded for some more 78s today.
traded two buddy moss records and the bill johnson's louisiana jug band for these --

skillet lickers - hawkings rag / skillet licker breakdown (buff bluebird, both sides with killer ted hawkins mandolin)
skillet lickers - devilish mary / soldier will you marry me (columbia)
luther b. clarke & the blue ridge highballers - wish to the lord i'd never been born / going down to lynchburg town (columbia)
elmer bird - little mamie / my mother's grave (supertone)
al hopkins buckle busters - bristol, tennessee blues / buck-eyed rabbits (brunswick)
al hopkins buckle busters - whoa mule / johnson boys (brunswick)
kessinger brothers - sixteen days in georgia / the girl i left behind me (brunswick)
kessinger brothers - done gone / chinky pin (brunswick)
flanagan brothers - the night paddy murphy died / irish delight (bluebird. 'the night paddy murphy died' is comedic and awesome.)
polish record by dukli wiejska on fiddle. (victor, from Crumb.)

man, i got pretty bent last night and broke out my junky 78 player. i know most '50s honky tonk came out on 45 as well, which is certainly a more convenient format, but goddamn it if a 78 isn't the only real way to hear this shit. the steel guitar will fucking cut you at 78 rpm. posting a youtube is almost offensively lacking.

Wondering if the country/blues fans on here ache to get out of the city when they listen to this stuff. I know I do, and it isn't hard for me to make the trip but I have to make the music digital first. These records deserve wooded, rolling hills in view as a supplement.
