Reasons not to buy that record.

I know I'm not the only one who goes shopping and can't avoid spending more than I initially intended.
So with that in mind, here are some reasons you should put that record back & not buy it:

-It's a reissue.
-It's scuffed
-There's label damage.
-There's a spine split.
-You can find it cheaper.
-You don't even listen to all the records you have.
-It's a live album.
-You've already got a half-dozen of their albums but only really listen to 2 or 3.
-The pressing quality sucks.

how else can we help ourselves save money

don't buy anything recorded after 1984. that makes things easier.

-maybe I already have a copy? can't remember...
-it's easy to find, I'll pick it up next time
-weird later album by generally solid artist. prob. better not to take the chance.
-cover is in some way defaced

You don't even listen to all the records you have

best line of defense imo

^^agree with all of these, with the caveat that i will buy live albums buy artists i have a lot of but it's rarely if ever the first album i'll buy by an artist. there are exceptions to that rule. the pressing quality one and the ability to find it cheaper are probably the top two.

also:

- has a crappy alternate cover and i want to hold out for the preferred original one (major offender here is blue note, who chose to reissue a lot of records with the cover style depicted below)

- I think I might play this in a DJ set but I only do 3-4 gigs a year
- expensive reissue of a record that was $5 everywhere 5 years ago
- I have it on MP3
- I have it on CD

^disagree with "i have it on other formats." i buy lots of things i bought on cd/downloaded for expediency's sake before eventually coming across the real deal. totally different listening spheres.
perhaps counter to the spirit of the thread. we are trying to trick ourselves, right?

woah, I like that new blue note style!

I got well into my thirties before realising that being unsure about whether I already owned a copy was probably a good reason *not* to buy.

<enabling> while you can always sell a record you don't like, you may never have the chance to buy it again! </enabling>

Yep, you should have gotten that Ry Cooder live album, although it's not too hard to find. It has a really nice version of Dark Side Of The Street.

No "you're running out of storage space" yet?

Defaced covers can be a plus if they're interesting enough (and the record is cheap enough obv)- one of my favorites is a copy of Simple Minds' Sister Feelings Call EP where someone very neatly wrote out "like anyone who PAYS for this RUBBISH" under the band name.

What's the deal with this, anyway?

To designate promo copies, isn't it? Like a holepunch or slit through the barcode on a cd...

this is my favourite defaced cover (though the writing is on the shrink)
