Nobody ever reads/answers questions in the other turntable threads, so...

Adjusting tonearm height: How!?! Even when I use a piece of (stable) boxcard with a line on it to compare I can't get it even. It looks level to me at 0 as much as it does at 5. The manual that came with my cartridges said adjust it to 4-5, but even still, I'm never sure.

Also, when I get the counterweight to 0 (as the cartridges are pretty heavy), the counterweight is pretty far at the end, so much so that when I rotate it it doesn't go forward (I have to push it forward, otherwise it just spins in the same place), and I have no idea whether they're set right, either. These cartridges are relatively new, and relatively new records are skipping, and it's really freaking me out.

I think I should take mine in to a real clinic (it seems the local audiophile store has free checkups anyhow).

yeah, sounds like it. have you tried taping a (very) small weight to the counterweight to compensate for your heavy cartridge? what kind of TT is this?

I'd adjust the tonearm height to the manual's specs for sure. If you're really curious record a minute or so of audio (at the same level) and compare results at different tonearm settings.
