okay i have discovered that i enjoy any waylon jennings lp up until like 1980. the same is true of jerry jeff walker, willie nelson, merle haggard etc. the late early seventies being the prime years imo. and these records are always cheap. despite scott's enthusiasm for them, I didn't enjoy the mickey newbury records I heard. I prefer a tight rhythm section to lush orchestration. other things i luv include the close harmonies, lady singers, steel guitar/dobro.

what are the best george jones records of the era? i haven't heard one that really grabbed me, but i haven't tried in a few years. what about glenn campbell? where to start?

i am asking you guys cuz i think this thread would get lost on ILM and/or people would start telling me I should listen to whatever is on CMT right now. tbh lately i've been getting into nanci griffith so you may take that into consideration offering suggestions! kthx!

late early seventies should read: "late sixties/early seventies"

this might be lame on my part, but just dig in! you can find the stuff cheap, right? most people can find cheap country records, so i only assume that you can. just saying it's fun to grab a bunch of stuff that looks cool/interesting/etc for cheap and just gorging on it. i basically just look for stuff in good shape.

scott seward, Wednesday, 9 December 2009 23:34 (fifteen years ago) link

but anyway i'll post stuff here as i listen and find things. can we just make this a general country vinyl thread? cuz there's lots of great stuff out there.

I've basically decided that I want to own EVERY Willie LP up until, I dunno, at least 'City of New Orleans' .. mid-80s. And it's so easy to collect 'em cuz, yeah, they're cheap. I mean, I already had the great 70s trilogy for over a decade now but lately I can't get enough of the guy so have picking up things like 'Tougher than Leather' and 'Without A Song', all those records where he does standards and stuff, for like 3-4 bucks a pop. Willie rules.

I even bought his new one from earlier this year on vinyl. another standards record, on Blue Note:

Yes Gary Stewart, and not just that one, I think you'd like "Steppin' Out" a lot.

"Bandy The Rodeo Clown" is the best of the (three or four) Moe Bandy LPs I have, but they're all pretty good.

Sammi Smith's stuff on Mega is mega, her Elektra material less so.

George Jones: I would go "Grand Tour" / "The Battle" / "Alone Again", that kind of period if I were you, "I Am What I Am" being the one, of course, which contains "He Stopped Loving Her Today" which everyone in the whole world agrees is the greatest recording ever made.

Cal Smith! No-one seems to care about Cal Smith anymore, but the (again, three or four) LPs of his I have all have an easygoing charm, and the greatest disappointment of my recent trip to the States was that I didn't manage to find the LP with this on:

<param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/cNf3eHJGe70&hl=en_GB&fs=1&";><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/cNf3eHJGe70&hl=en_GB&fs=1&"; type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344">

(The other greatest disappointment was not locating a copy of the Gary Stewart LP on MCA, "You're Not The Woman You Used To Be" which I REALLY want.

Can't really go wrong w/ Charlie Rich, any period, but I seem to see this alb a lot in the UK:

FWIW the Glen C LPs I like the most are the obvious country pop ones of the late 60s - Galveston / By The Time I Get To Phoenix / Gentle On My Mind / and Bobbie Gentry, plus the "Reunion" one with Jimmy Webb from '74

BUT the latter is barely a country LP at all
AND even those listed above have their dodgy moments
AND I've yet to find one of his LPS with nothing of any value. Having said that I've only gone as far as "Old Home Town" ('82 or '83 I think).

Thanks for the suggestions!

that merle album up there is fantastic.

seriously you can hardly go wrong with any merle haggard, save a few dire late 80s/early 90s ones.

figuratively, but in a very real way (amateurist), Saturday, 12 December 2009 02:11 (fifteen years ago) link

doh...they were there last night. weird

anyway the three that I listed were

Hank Williams Jr - & Friends
Moe Bandy - I Just Started Hatin' Cheatin' Songs Today
Jerry Lee Lewis - She Even Woke Me Up to Say Goodbye

generally speaking I've found country LPs from this era to be really hit/miss, even from great artists. There's always some bunk pop cover or silly instrumental.

Johnny Hotcox, Saturday, 12 December 2009 02:20 (fifteen years ago) link

i like the bunk pop covers. i was gonna make a creedence -vs- dylan country cover mix, but i didn't. but i should!

scott seward, Saturday, 12 December 2009 02:23 (fifteen years ago) link

enjoying this right now. from 1975.

I love how self-consciously safe a lot of the pop and country record album covers of the time were - like "No hippies here, just a nice, clean-cut, smiling young man who has healthy teeth and would like to play a song for you."
